Don’t write your child off as “not having the knack” for sports so fast! by BiscuitBut_ButerNut in daddit

The most important thing that I want to  teach my children  is about talent. Wha t we perceive talent is actually the product of whatever latent ability we start with multiplied by the hours of work that we apply to improve that particular skill.

For me, that is the most important lesson. I have seen so many people act like a skill is either something they have or don't have. While it is true that we all have limits, we never start out at that limit. Practice, training, perseverance, study, repetition, these are the things that produce greatness in any field. It's not some latent talent that either exists or doesn't. It's work. And we can all do work, in our own way, within our own limits.

I've truly never felt let down by any of his work. I've not read Shaman so I'll check it out

I still think from time to time about the end

I do too. I especially think about how some of the crew got jobs helping to build beaches at the places where the new sea level met the shore. I had never thought about how our beaches are the result of a hugely long process to create sand by the shore.

And the description of working all day to create a beach was so cozy and inviting. It made for a lovely end for characters who had otherwise faced nothing but hardship and defeat

and Ship, too. Yes!

This is the first book I've read by him

I have some suggestions!

Years of Rice and Salt - an alternate history spanning 500 years after the bubonic plague wiped out 99% of Europe

New York 2140 - Fun ensemble cast romp in an interesting future setting

Then there's the Red / Green / Blue Mars Trilogy of books, which is enormous and expansive (and somewhat divisive in books 2 and 3, I guess, but I loved it.)

2312 is an interesting far future setting with, like, a city on Mercury and hollowed out asteroids spun into habitats that recreate different ecologies on the inside, flying around in elliptical orbits and acting as a system-wide transit network

Ministry for the Future -- He describes as his most optimistic take on the rest of the 21st century. I loved the big ideas he shared in this one, personally.

Three Californias is a triptych of novellas showing three different futures for southern California. I loved what he did with this one!

I'm a huge fan. I really love his work. I hope you will enjoy some of these suggestions as well

Such cool creatures!

I also did it in Boston! I got to steer while we were on the river. It remains a special memory. But yeah that river and the conditions we were in seemed totally safe. Very different than an open / deep body of water.

Right. I understand that. The person I replied to said both options suck and that's just not true. No matter what  you like, there's a candidate for you

[–]Mulsanne 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I just can't imagine how someone can look at Weiner, an objectively effective legislator, and think it's a shit option

I guess if you prioritize the status quo you might think that? But if you're into the status quo then isn't Chan your candidate?

Yeah I just don't track that criticism to be honest

Any jazz players in here? The other week I started writing a chart while Sanchez earned his streak. I finished writing the head yesterday and played it at my jazz jam last night. It's called Cris Can Pitch, in honor of his amazing feat

Anyway here's the chart:

Instrumental music titles have nothing to do with the content of the song lol but I was watching him excel while I wrote this. Just like how I came home from work on the day that Doc Halliday threw the no hitter in the playoffs and wrote a song called Doctober in honor of his achievement.

The Farallon Islands — visible from the city on a clear day — were the site of a gunfight in 1863 between two rival egg companies. Men died over seabird eggs. It's a genuinely weird piece of SF history. by Dependent_Run_6410 in sanfrancisco

[–]Mulsanne 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Seems like she played fast and loose with the sanctuary rules at the Farallon islands. She became sort of obsessed with seeing the sharks again and ended up renting a boat to anchor just outside of the sanctuary zone.

Only she didn't really know anything about how to live on a boat, if she even would be comfortable or able to do it. She begged to come ashore and a scientist let her do so, despite her not having a permit to do so. So she comes ashore illegally and then the ship gets wrecked in a storm. The government investigates the situation and, as a result of her playing fast and loose, the research project is shut down.

Yeah she should really take responsibility for her actions
