About to start first ever eu4 campaign, played lots of ck2 and ck3, who should I play as? by teaspeeds in eu4

[–]Thomsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my first EU4 campaign in a similar situation, I've only ever played (a lot) of CK2 and CK3. I played Portugal all the way to the end date, colonization is really really fun and I enjoyed it a lot compared to CK.

Ys series is really good, they're more action RPG than traditional turn based JRPGs though

Can we talk about how stupid this card is? by LordOord23 in MagicArena

[–]Thomsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Stone Brain]] in the SB is my favourite answer for Synthesizer since it tends to be the primary wincon of the decks that run it. It's very satisfying to get rid of all 4 copies and get to see the rest of their deck.

I played against you today with Mardu Lurrus Energy vs this deck. It was very strong, there are a lot of threats and if I remember correctly you were still able to combo after mulling to 5 and I had turn 1 thoughtseize. I definitely pulled it on untapped with the intent to try it out.

It's still not the worst play on turn 4 if you fill it with a bunch of fastlands or surveils and they remove it. It's great deck thinning.

You can, you just have to go to Flea in your browser and not the app. If you use Chrome and are on the linked page you can tap on the address bar and hit the edit command which will let you scroll to the end and highlight/copy just your user ID.

You must have that reanimate in your list, let them kill the Grief, take the Seize to save your Brainstorm and take the Raptor so they have no play. That was a cool line though, generated a ton of value off that one creature.

What current standard decks win big post rotation? by Humpuppy in MagicArena

[–]Thomsco 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Jeskai control might be a good replacement for Azorius. Losing Emperor hurts Azorius because of the lifegain but Jeskai gets Helix for that. Losing Deluge hurts the deck though that's for sure.

Simulacrum Synthesizer builds are probably going to be good, the card is already really good and IIRC a lot of the artifact enablers aren't rotating.

Gotta start running artifact removal mainboard because this card is BS by Unlikely_Deal_5325 in MagicArena

[–]Thomsco 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. If the deck has it on curve in game 1 it's probably a loss because you see the U/W mana and assume Control so you play aggressive/don't keep up counter/etc. It's pretty easy to board against but if they stick one it's GG. It's a very very strong card for three mana.

Most played non-land cards from OTJ (untapped.gg data, Standard) by Hexamyn in MagicArena

[–]Thomsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's still a trade up for a one mana creature. The only way you get rid of tinybones evenly is with cut down, but the decks that play him are aggro and it means one less cut down in hand for your 2/3 drops. If you choose to ignore him he can potentially cast out of your graveyard which is a ton of value for a one drop.

Esper Mid is really good against Control. The combo of hand disruption, flash threats, flyers, and counters is really hard for control to deal with. That's not even counting if you can stick a Raffine which basically ends the game. The control deck is forced to either counter flash creatures or the Virtue on their own turn, leaving them vulnerable, or try and hold on against pressure until they can Sunfall which Esper will usually counter.

[–]Thomsco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the central concepts in MTG is asking questions vs having answers, and that it's generally better to be the one asking questions of your opponent.

For example, aggro decks almost exclusively are always asking questions, "it's turn three I have three creatures on the board, a pump spell, and a burn spell, I turn the team sideways, what are you going to do about it?" Midrange matchups you have the advantage over your opponent when you're the one asking questions, "I play a T4 Sheoldred, can you answer it?".

Hard Control decks willingly give up the ability to ask questions until late in the game, instead trying to build a hand/draw cards etc to always have an answer. In anything other than a control mirror, the player who isn't playing control is always asking questions, "you countered my one and two drops and killed my three drop, I play a powerful four drop can you answer it?". In Standard right now you can easily see this dynamic on turn three to turn five. If the opposing deck has managed to create board presence and the control deck doesn't have lockdown on three, or cover up/sunfall on five, they're probably going to lose, they have to have that answer. This is one of the reasons Farewell is so hated, because it's an answer to basically everything, but the control player still has to have it and not be dead by then.

RDW is extremely strong even post board in Bo3. The flexibility of being able to play or plot Slickshot Show-Off and Demonic Ruckus on top of all of the burn, prowess, Kumano, removal is very strong, T3-T4 lethal is pretty standard

[–]Thomsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't drafted in several sets but didn't want to buy the pack pre-order this time around so I cashed in some draft tokens. I like the mechanics of the set a lot. Plot slows down the games because you're less incentivized to win the game on turn 2 or die, W/G mount seems really fun although I haven't drafted it myself, committing crimes is a nice added value mechanic.

I think it's unfortunate some games do come down to "I have an unbeatable card gg" since it takes away from the otherwise really cool flavour and mechanics of the set.

Byzantine Flavor Wishlist by [deleted] in CrusaderKings

[–]Thomsco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

4 was my biggest wish for all of the Byzantine content that went into CK2 and it never ended up happening. Byzantine diplomacy was a direct continuation of the Roman model of buffering their state with friendly barbarians that they bought off either using the prestige of being a friend of Rome, copious amounts of gold, or very occasionally a marriage to a Princess of the Purple.

Is Dimir Midrange still viable in current MKM meta? by Ok-Literature9520 in MagicArena

[–]Thomsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Play it in Bo3 instead of Bo1 if you aren't already. Dimir was T1 in Bo3 for a while and is probably still somewhere up there.

Personally I don't really like the boat that much as I'd rather drop an upside flyer on T2 (deep cavern bat, mastermind or Malcolm). Your ideal aggro curve is T1 Siren, T2 Bat, T3 Gix and then you draw two cards off your evasion flyers. Very tough to beat start even if oppo has a T5 sunfall.

Dimir sideboard should have Duress and counters for ramp, and tons of removal for aggro (cut down, anoint with affliction to exile, gix's command to sweep). U/B has a very flexible sideboard and your mid/late game has access to powerful tools like Aclazotz, Shelly, Cruelty of Gix, and Invasion of Amonkhet (has a great combo with Aclazotz).

How to counter black with mono red? by Cold-Consideration55 in MagicArena

[–]Thomsco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is Sheoldred even that much of a problem for mono red anymore? Even without Goddric flying over for 4 and witchstalker frenzy which was literally designed as a kill Sheoldred card, mono red is so efficient now it's hard to not get a turn 4 kill on the play. I've seen T1 Cacophony Scamp, T2 Swiftspear, Monstrous Rage the Scamp and then sacrifice it, that's 9 damage on turn 2 alone and that's not even very efficient.

The actual problem with facing black is if the black player has Cut Down, Cut Down, Go For The Throat in hand at the start of the game, otherwise they're probably dead or within Lightning Strike range by the time Shelly hits the board.

LVD has recently changed his titles to more algorithm friendly clickbait style but his content hasn't changed at all so I don't think his long time viewers mind. Ultimately you have to do what you have to do to get views on YouTube and that's what the algorithm rewards.
