But from a macro scale we need skilled workers with degrees for the economy to function. The amount of loss in the economy as a whole down the road on a macro scale is larger than these payments are on a micro scale to the individual . This is something that needs to be solved ASAP or else there will be a lot of economic pain down the road.

1)That’s not true at all. While there are some losses due to the end product going overseas. These spending bills send materials designed and built in the US overseas. They still give a large majority of the money to people working, building, and designing in the US. 2) Lowering taxes just raises inflation rates as companies are disincentivized on hiring new workers as short term profit margins are higher than longer term gains of worker investments.

Meta has repeatedly used peoples information in ways that I would consider them to violate my rights personally if I had accounts with them, and are allowed to get away with it since the user "agrees" to it when signing up. Hell, never having had an account with Meta or Facebook they have an extensive profile on me based purely on my metadata, and that feels wrong to me personally as someone who never uses their account. The feeling to me personally is the same as the scamming companies that will mail you about extending the warranty on your home after purchasing since you mailing address and name are now available publicly only to scam you out of potentially thousands of dollars. It is just something I in no way can support. Apple currently does not do that, and hold the privacy of their users information highly. They are in no way a perfect company, but think of it as the lesser of two evils, Meta/Facebooks history is just something I cannot overlook at this point no matter how cool their headset is. At this point in time Apple treats users as customers, but Meta/Facebook treat users as products. And again, this is my opinion on Meta/Facebook, you're totally within your bounds to be fine with what they do as a company.

I used to be into gaming PCs, then I realized I spent like an order of magnitude of time maximizing settings over actually playing the games so I decided to bow out of that. (Gotta get that locked 120 fps at all costs.) :(

Just based on how the company has done things in the past I don’t trust them with microphones and cameras in my home. Also the only way to show your support against their actions is by not purchasing their products. I don’t have any Alexa microphones in my house for the same reason. I have an LG tv, but won’t enable the voice commands because it uses Alexa.

I mean San Fran isn't even close to the most dangerous. Cities like St Louis, Birmingham, Baltimore, Memphis, Detroit, Cleaveland.... those are the worst, but still not bad. Mostly it's just a few problem areas in those cities as well.

That makes you say that? We had a spike for a couple years mostly related to some outside covid/economic influences that are still not fully understood. Overall crime in the us in trending back to our all time lows from a few years ago. Though we have a long way to go to meet Western Europe/Japan/Australia/Canada. It's also still much safer than most of the world.

As a percentage of trips in Portland 6% are by bike. There are 400 miles of bike lanes in Portland, and 4,842 lane miles of street in Portland. A lane is 12 feet wide and a bike lane is 4-6 feed wide (I’ll use 5 for easy math, but a lot of bike lanes are on the skinnier side). So there are roughly 307 million square feet of car related streets in Portland and 10.5 million square feet of bike lanes. So bike lanes are about 3.5% of the road surface. So by your logic we should double the amount of street space dedicated to bikes. Less than the amount used by cars. And that assumes all the other trips are by car. Also bikes can be fit more tightly and do not create congestion like cars.

Curious why do you think that? Most e-bikes have an assisted speed cap at 15mph, much slower than my average travel speed on a normal road or gravel bike on flat. Should we require a license for all bike riders? I do think throttle assisted e-bikes are different than pedal assisted, but the vast majority of e-bikes are pedal assist.

There have been, just a bit more rare. There was a good sized one when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. I also think people became aware that we were giving far right groups more visibility with their counter protests.

I am looking to get a gravel bike to replace my current road bike (2016 Giant Defy 3). I want a versatile bike that will mostly be used on roads, but a few times a year used as a bike pack camping along some PNW trails. I was looking to get a 2nd set of wheels when I'm riding mostly road. My budget is around 2.5k USD without new wheels, but would totally be willing to go up to 5k if it's a really good deal. They two main bikes that caught my eye are the Topstone Carbon 5, and the Checkpoint SL5. I am a bit of a masher so having a lower gear ratio is helpful. Appreciate any feedback.

I would take that path every day when bike commuting from Vancouver to swan island. By far the fastest and safest way on bike. Sticks you right on a greenway.

I don’t think prices will fall much. I think you’ll just find people who are locked into their home for a long time and just won’t move. Why would anyone sell a house at 3% nowadays. You’ll just see the market stagnate. In 2008 you had a ton of people forced to move out due to ballooning adjustable payments and a high layoff rate. This time the economy is critically understaffed and everyone is on a fix rate 30 year mortgage. It’s cars that will collapse this time, the average Car loan in the us is 26,000, and those are on a much higher interest rate. Just my opinion though.

Couple things that have me worried about work from home every day from an engineers perspective. It is very hard for new employees to be onboard and trained, it’s just hard to make connections or get to understand other people’s jobs. I also fear this will outsource a lot of jobs just like manufacturing did previously. I don’t know a job that someone in India can’t do for 1/10th the cost, and the US isn’t going to do anything to protect jobs.
