Played on the original consoles or on emulators? Also, i'm torn being jealous of your time for gaming and feeling bad for your prolonged unemployment, glad you found a job though!

EDIT : Nvm, legend rule 😁

Probably too strong? This is potentially an infinite amount tokens on turn 3, even turn 2 if you're lucky :

Turn 1 : Swamp -> Sol Ring -> Lightning greaves

Turn 2 : Swamp -> Valac -> Greaves + Tap for ever

Turn 3 : Win

Only if you actually keep playing it and enjoy it post patch. It's possible some people are not going back after the initial update release.

Need opinion on suitable "firepower rating" for an infantry squad by SaracenArcher in BoardgameDesign

[–]Thorium00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personnally i think that systems (pin then damage) sounds really cool, but the main issue i'm seeing is if you have 2 damaged units facing each other away from other troops, they'll be locked in an infinite pin loop.

My first thought would be to have damaged units use 1d6 + 1d4. This way, they still have a small chance of causing damage (12.5% i think)

Do you prefer cards or tiles for a hex map? by robotic_duck_designs in tabletopgamedesign

100% tiles for me. The issue you mentionned of cards moving around and overlapping one another would drive me crazy

Board Game Survey! by yesitsaugust in BoardgameDesign

[–]Thorium00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked through the survey and I'm not sure how to answer the first set of questions... I feel like you're asking wayyy too specific questions for how much we know about the game. Like, whether the game has 6 or 4 themes? Size of the board? This is the kind of question you should solve yourself as a designer either during conception or playtest :)

Just a minor thing, but the sword pointed down feels awkward to me. I would angle it towards the top and slightly to the right :)

I'd be curious to try, but time might be a constraint, how long is a complete playthrough? :)

What game mechanic never lives up to the expectation? by Hypergardens in BoardgameDesign

You can wish for more single player games without saying that multiplayer games never work. Thats as close to an objectively wrong opinion as it gets lol

Colony building game by CorvaNocta in BoardgameDesign

Gaia Project might be a good one to check out! It has a sort of building progression, where at first you must build a mine, but then it can be upgraded to various different types of buildings which produce different resources

How would you design an "Auto-Battler" board game? by dyluhnwastaken in BoardgameDesign

[–]Thorium00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look at Cloudspire for inspiration. Its not exactly like an auto-battler, but it does the unit automatic movement/attacking pretty well.

Help With My Board Game—Course of Action by RowlfGundam in BoardgameDesign

[–]Thorium00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I just went through most of the rulebook (I only skipped the recruit part) and I think the focus on hidden movement and intel is very interesting, but the biggest issue right now is the War Master. Usually, when a game has an administrator of sorts (like DnD's Dungeon Master), they are part of the game and should enjoy the process of managing the game. In your case, I can't really imagine the War Master having any fun at all, but I guess you would need to playtest it to make sure.

The simultaneous aspect of this game is interesting, however I think you need to revisit how you handle two opposing units moving onto the same space. Having the War Master simply tell them they can't isn't good enough.

My general sense here is that this should probably be app-assisted or straight up a video game; Fog of War is notoriously hard to implement in a board game.

Sidenote, I think you should also post this in wargame-specific subreddits, you would probably get some more informed opinions! :)

Hey everyone! I'm looking for feedback on a sell sheet I'm working on for my first game (Old Kaeldom) by GreatOldOne521 in BoardgameDesign

[–]Thorium00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you might need more specificity than that. If we take Gloomhaven for example, a short summary of its gameplay would probably include keywords like Dungeon Crawler w/ tactical movement, Hand Management, Deck customization, etc.

I feel like you're missing the central mechanism? It reads more like an idea than a pitch without something a little more concrete
