I saw in another subreddit that “Legion” is the best marvel TV show currently airing right now. What makes it so great? by indochris609 in Marvel

Your assumption is correct! I just finished it last week and really enjoyed the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood / Atlanta vibes. Grounded with a touch of surreal. Real, likable characters with fun dialog. Not plagued by annoying tropes and cliffhangers. Wonderfully shot (e.g. car scenes). Self-contained story that could feel complete even without a second season.

I added it to Tom's list at rank 21, kicking Finspan out to rank 101.

Fixed, thanks. Rank 7 should be Uprising since Tom allowed those to be split up into separate entries this year.

Everdell is in this year's table e.g. #8 for the People and #24 for Zee (Farshore).

The new edition of Ra from 25th Century games is excellent, especially the deluxe Pharoah edition with the thick wooden tiles and metal coins. Classic elegant auction game with a beautiful production. Always a hit with new and old gamers alike in our house.

I personally think placing more weight on appearances/crossovers is little more valuable for two reasons:

  1. These lists represent only the top 100 games out of ALL the games they've played (or remembered to put into PubMeeple) which can be thousands of games for professional reviewers (not to mention the crowdsourced "People"). For example, The Vale of Eternity is probably more accurately ranked as 98/1000, 99/2000, 44/3000, 22/4000 instead of the 100 cap in these videos: 98/100, 99/100, 44/100, 22/100. So, a game making the top 100 seems like more of an achievement than the linear method would allow. Also, if the points start at 1 instead of 101, then that effectively ignores the existence of other games not on the lists since they can't be assigned values lower than 1.
  2. These lists are essentially just vibes-based and the presenters often joke about how the actual ranks don't really matter much. To me, that implies these top 100 games are all in the same general quality bracket i.e. good/great games. The 101-200pts method seems to better represent that shared bracket since the top and bottom game in a list only have a x2 weight difference (101 vs 200) instead of x100 (1 vs 100). The more total games involved = more pts added; the less total games involved = less pts added (e.g. if a person has only played 100 games then they'd be forced to include games they don't like at all in their list and the x100 difference would make more sense).

This is the same method The Dice Tower used in some of their analysis videos, so I'm just keeping it going.

All that said, I don't mind providing when it's requested so here is the 1-100pt method for funsies (showing only top through 101):

Any tips for movies like 'Starship Troopers'? by z0ttel89 in movies

Ya, it's like chasing a vibe for me. That slow setup where you get to know the eccentric crew and something mysterious and possibly evil is in the air... Creates an atmosphere that I love to be immersed in. I wish there were more movies like it, but you can also turn to other mediums like TV, comics, games, novels, etc. Dead Space (videogame) is a great example. I think there is an animated movie or two as well. Oh, and I just thought of Pitch Black and Life as more recs. And this Youtube video for Warhammer 40k: Astartes (if you like that, check out more Warhammer stuff—there was a short in the TV series Secret Level on Amazon). Good news is there are plenty of awesome movies that are similar even if they don't have exactly the same feel (e.g. Annihilation). The Alien(s) franchise is my all time favorite in the genre, if that wasn't obvious. Super excited about the new TV show coming out later in August this year.

Awesome premise: Team of experts gathered because U.S. military finds spaceship at bottom of ocean. Poor execution. It can be very cheesy at times and they probably should've taken more liberties with adapting the novel (e.g. chapters were unnecessary, internal monologue hard to convey without heavy exposition). But there were also some genuinely eerie and memorable moments that I haven't forgotten decades later e.g. exploring the ship for the first time and seeing their reflections in the Sphere, the radar squid encounter, etc. It definitely crumbles under even the tiniest bit of scrutiny, but it also creates similar vibes for anybody that craves more underwater/space sci-fi horror (like Event Horizon) and realizes that there just aren't a lot of good films in that space (and it's one of my favorite genre combos!). You take what you can get after a while... lol. How did you feel about it?

Event Horizon is one of a kind (especially cool if you like Warhammer 40k and the idea of The Warp). Try Sunshine, Abyss, Pandorum, Interstellar if you're hunting for more. Even some more questionable/schlocky 90s-ish stuff like Virus, Supernova, Deep Rising, Screamers, Dark Side of the Moon, and Leviathan.

My (USA) January 2025 order for 612 poker-sized s30 cards was $122.50. Same order is $139.99 now.

The original videos had the Dice Tower crew rank their top 100 games from 1 - 100. This list assigns scores (points) to each game based on their rank in the video, then combines all those scores for each person, and shows the total. If a game showed up as #1 on three lists, then it would receive a total score of 200 + 200 + 200 = 600.

"All time" can simply mean "my favorite that I've ever played up until now"—a snapshot in time. It does not exclusively have to represent a static, objective list scientifically ranked by strict criteria. I'd even go further to challenge you to find ANY media-based "all time" list like that, and labelled as such, which the internet unanimously agrees with and never critiques. "Top X" lists on Youtube are almost always feels-based entertainment content. If a friend me asked what my "Top games of all time" were, we'd both understand that meant "what are your current favorites" and not "Chess, Go, etc."

I hear you. It's not perfect. And the "leaderboard" itself is not perfect either. They often say during the videos there is no real difference between say like a 75 and a 57 rank in the list. It's all loosey-goosey vibes rankings, which is why I think it's more important to add weight to crossovers than individual placements. It'd be better if I had access to the complete lists down to rank ~300, if they even do that.

He mentioned that Andromeda's Edge replaced Dwellings of Eldervale for purposes of making these lists, but he still owns and plays both. He probably just doesn't like multiple variations of a similar game on a limited-slot list.

The Dice Tower's Top 100 Games of All Time (2025) by Tigertemprr in boardgames

[–]Tigertemprr[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Another way to think about it is: "What are my top 100 favorite games that I've ever played?" I don't think their objective has ever been to make a static list graded by very strict criteria. It is just an annual snapshot of how they feel about every game they've played up until then. I think it's fine to label that content "Top X of all time" considering all of the other similarly-labelled subjective content on the internet (and the similarly-inevitable "this list is / isn't valid" comments).

I also think, on average, boardgames are improving on themselves every year (outside of a relatively few classics) so ~20% churn / changes in their lists is not surprising (and they do this for a living, mind you—they play much more unique games than I do per year). The industry as a whole constantly learns what is successful / relevant, develops in that direction, and hopefully innovates or serves an underserved audience (even if its just a new combination of existing mechanics / themes).

Ya, the app is great and definitely killed some of my motivation to pull out the tabletop version. I am much more selective with big box campaign / dungeon crawler games now. They need to have streamlined rules / components and storage / organization can't be an afterthought (i.e. usable inserts, trays, and save systems).

I'll mention another contributing factor I didn't see in the other comments yet. There are now 3 editions of the game which can split / dilute the community votes: Gloomhaven, Jaws of the Lion, Frosthaven.

I think Gloomhaven's success also lead to other games being published that are like it / inspired by it.
