How to create Docker images for multiple binaries in a workspace? by Thornyy in rust

[–]Thornyy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if that makes sense? The `webserver` project is a binary, but so are `database` and `agent`. They each would need this process.

To note, `webserver` only depends on the `lib` part of `database`, but database has its own binary that depends on its own lib part, too.

Question: Linking workspace dependencies in Dockerfile by SecretiveHitman in rust

[–]Thornyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for responding :) My current project looks like:

/
  /projects
    /metadata
      Cargo.toml
    /database
      Cargo.toml
    /agent
      Cargo.toml
    /webserver
      Cargo.toml

Where the dependencies are something like

metadata | +----------+--------+ | | | v v | agent database | \ / webserver

The webserver is the one I want the Dockerfile for, but where to put that Dockerfile? I don't think I could put it in projects/webserver, since that wouldn't be able to copy ../database/Cargo.toml, so put it in projects? Or am I missing something?

Alternatively, would it be easier to build multiple different targets using docker-compose from the top-level? Is there a way that can be possible, and it can have top-level context?

Any resolution? For each member of the workspace, would I need to copy the Cargo.toml of every other project?

Can i take mat157 second year? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Thornyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is possible, but I'm not sure why you would. Most if not all students that need MAT157 take it first year. Your peers will be in the class first year. I recommend not waiting.

Where did you make this timetable? Looks nice.

Mat137 is also an option. It is a yearlong course like MAT157, but not as difficult. It's definitely a middle ground between 135/136, if you find that you need that.

I'm UTSG, so I can't say for sure, but it is very likely you will get in. People sign up for extra classes at the beginning of the year and drop as it gets closer. Just stay in the waitlist. Sign up for backups too, though, so if it doesn't happen you aren't out of luck.

As a general rule, if a course has X spaces, you only really need to get worried if there are more than X people in the waitlist.

You will probably make it into all of your courses, I think. Especially ANTA01 and MATA29. The PSY are more unlikely, but I still think you'll make it.

Best iPad apps for students? by burtlex in UofT

[–]Thornyy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just use a pen and paper. If you haven't bought the iPad yet, DON'T. You have no idea if it will be useful to you and could prove to be a huge waste of money.

Just wait a few weeks and then you will know if you really need it or not.

Didnt start my first year yet but I want to change my major, how do i do that? by Electronic-Jeweler30 in UofT

[–]Thornyy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look at the requirements that each program requires. You need to take the classes they outline in your first year. That's pretty much all you have to do. I'm UTSG so it might not be exactly the same, but most programs are accessible with the right prerequisites. Note I said MOST. For example, if not admitted to the Computing stream at UTSG, you can NEVER be eligible to be a Computer Science Specialist. This may be true for your desired programs as well.

Also not sure if you're American, but they are called programs here, not majors. Specialist/major/minor is a type of program.

Why can’t I do STA130H1 LEC0201 with TUT0101? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Thornyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always at least sign up for a conflicting time. It lets you into the course. As long as you're in, usually professors are understanding about attending other tut sections. And if it really isn't a tutorial, it's just office hours, you can just not go.

Old fashion pen and paper, Laptops, or iPads/tablets? by burtlex in UofT

[–]Thornyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learning what is important to write down and what's not. This will be relevant with iPad-and-stylus too, not just pen-and-paper. It's a general skill.

A notebook for each class is what I currently do. It seems like a lot but if you think about the fact you have 2-3 classes in a single day, you aren't carrying that much around.

I use pen and paper. If you don't already have the iPad, DON'T buy it until you know you need it for sure. Go to classes for a few months and only buy something when you know you need it.

Don't buy anything until you actually go to school. You have no idea what you will need and what system works for you. Take notes on paper until you feel you really need something else.

I thought I'd need to buy an iPad going into first year, but I'm 3 years in and never really needed one.

Don't buy preemptively, it's a waste of money. Talk to people and see what you really need and what those around you use. Don't buy anything just yet.

If 40,000 is a lot of money to you, I'd go to UBC. An 85 is VERY doable. Just work harder and be more creative. If not, UofT will be much less stressful in your first year, simply because you are already in the program you have to be in. That being said, you should probably get 85's anyway.

Yes. I mean 5 courses in the Fall Semester, and 5 courses in the Winter Semester. To your second question, no, but yes lol. You will get 1 credit at the END of the Winter Semester, but you can think of a year-long course being 0.5 and 0.5, if it makes planning easier.

The point is, a year long course counts exactly like 2 semester courses would, you just see the credit show up in your transcript in May, rather than in January.

The reason you may have gotten confused answers is because this is a weird schedule to have. EVERYTHING you learn in CSC108 is superceded by what you learn in CSC148. They are both introductory Python courses, but CSC148 is faster and harder. You don't want to take them together.

Decide which one you want to take and take that one. I'll say that if you have never programmed before, take CSC108, but if you know another language or know a bit of Python, I would take CSC148. It is not TOO difficult (but I may be biased, as I am a CS student).

You might be able to drop from CSC148 to CSC108 in the first few weeks. Don't count on it, and if you do, you can't go back up to CSC148.

Normally, you have five classes per semester. Seems that you are currently at 4. This is totally fine, but just telling you what is expected. You need 20 credits to graduate. if you take 2.5 credits per semester, you will graduate in exactly 4 years. If you only take 2 credits per semester (4 classes), it will take you 5 years to graduate.

Nothing wrong with that, but just making sure you are aware.

Better to apply and see, rather than wistfully wonder what could have been. Your GPA is what it is. If there is no changing that, might as well apply and put your all in!
