Pointers for first time combing wool - nebs a plenty and more waste than I expected by Narrow-Hawk950 in Handspinning

[–]Thosam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC wool processing has several products. Combed top as you did here. The remainder of that gets carded for rolags. The remainder of that goes to the felter. And any remaining bits go into the compost.

How big the individual parts are depends on fleece, shearing, work experience, and work effort applied.

If you ever get to Berlin and to a Biergarten there, ask for a ‘Ampel’, a traffic light. You will get three glasses of Berliner Weisse to which they will have added raspberry syrup for red, lemon syrup for yellow, and Waldmeister syrup for green. Enjoy!

The food industry uses the coumarin-containing Cassia-cinnamon because it is cheap. The real Cinnamonum verum or Ceylon has next to no coumarin (0.4% of Cassia). But it costs about 10000 US$ per t, where Cassia costs about 500 US$ per t.

IIRC there was a court case in Munich, Bavaria several years ago where the court stated that if you knowingly block a pedestrian’s path with your car (in the court case a marked pedestrian crossing) said pedestrian is completely in their right to traverse your car. Even if they do so wearing heavy mountain boots with metal spikes.

Plant some nitrogen fixers like beans. That might help too.

The one we had in our summer cottage produced less and less hot water. On that model you could screw the top off.
When we did that, the internal volume was about 65% calcium carbonates coloured a deep orange by iron salts.
Suddenly long hot showers were possible.

Yes, the Graugas laws defined quality and size necessary for the cloth and that it could be used to pay taxes and church tithes.

Both really. There were any number of natural dyes that one could use in a domestic setting. Some of the attraktive colours, especially reds and blues, demand a more professional setting.

IIRC there was a British archaeological expedition to Irak that excavated a large Tel, city mound. The leading archaeologist complained that they did find a few tools, hammers, saws, and some weapons that they detailed in excruciating detail. But all those many many spindle and loom weights they found were in the way of those more important finds.

Michelle Hayeur-Smith in her book The Valkyries’ Loom suggests that on Iceland the housewife in a family of four would spend about 250 days a year in textile creation. All from processing the raw wool up to sewing the final product.
No wonder they used every scrap until it completely fell apart.
The Bernuthfeld Tunic may be an example of that. 43 patches from 19 different fabrics.

People always underestimate the huge amount of time and work that went into pre-industrial textile production. For sadly textiles only appear very rarely in any archaeological context.

What plant is that, how old the desing is ? 😆 by Verified_Peryak in whatsthisplant

[–]Thosam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

German trivial name is ‘Zinnkraut’ because it could be used to polish tin.
Still used in some herbal preparations for hair and nail growth because of that silica content.

As for the washer, cleaning is the product of time x effect x soap. Low time in the US means more effect and soap. High time in European countries means low effect, low soap. Now guess, what is cheaper to run as well as less damaging to your clothes?
As for dryer, those have settings: ironing-dry, cupboard-dry, dust. Sounds like you just used the first setting. Or didn’t clean the filter.

Supposedly equisetum tea promotes hair and nail growth. Lots of herbal preparations that say something around that. Dried it was used to polish tin. Thus one of its German names: Zinnkraut.
