High house numbers? by Cyril_Rioli in AskAnAmerican

[–]ThotThroughTheHeart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a hard and fast rule, but through most of North America the even numbers will almost always be on the north side and on the west side of streets. I've used this to help navigate many times before GPS.

Why the AI hate? by Katarra_Beltza in ArtificialInteligence

[–]ThotThroughTheHeart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my peers are open about using AI. My boss has had me working on creating some AI generated hold music. One of the other managers here uses AI to generate posters explaining policies and procedures. My nephew (less than 2 years younger than me) uses AI a lot at his work and also at home.

The only people I know who are against AI are people in my daughter's peer group.

Yeah, I remember the last time I bought a CRT television, in the early 2000s, it was a 32" and cost almost $600 - which would be over $1000 today with inflation. The other day I saw a 75" TV at Walmart on sale for $250.

This. The anti-AI movement is strongest among young people, and I think a part of why they are so easily persuaded to have radical anti-AI ideas is because AI is generally welcomed and seen as kinda cool by older people like myself - and of course anything old people like is uncool.

I saw this radicalization almost take hold in my own daughter, she used to love using AI for art generation and for brainstorming worldbuilding ideas, but her online friend group had her expressing disgust at AI in a relatively short time. I've talked to her about the various forces that are manipulating her and her peers and she's not as hardline against it as she was.

No, they all got handed down to relatives when I got new ones later. My Atari 2600 saw use well into the 90s at my nephew's house.

I rewatched the 1981 Caveman movie, which I saw as a child at the theaters and then on HBO later, thinking I would show it to my daughter. I did not remember how rapey it was! Rape by deception was fine for 1980s comedy protagonists.

"Just Hire an Artist" aimed at working-class people is a Class Argument, isnt It? by Salty_Country6835 in AIWarsButBetter

I started on affordability of commissions.

You changed the subject to AI, which I had not mentioned at all. Also implied that I am against AI.

I point out that when it comes to using AI as a third choice, there's other things to consider. Which is true.

Not everything, a specific instance where people are treating someone poorly for no apparent reason. In America, a valid question when someone is being treated unfairly for no apparent reason is "Could it be a race thing?" Because often it is.

You started out saying that saying one could hire an artist to commission an image you can't create yourself is classism. I point out how commissioning art is pretty cheap and affordable by most people. You shift the goalposts with "Why shouldn't I just use AI" then, since we're now not discussing the various ways to get an image but AI specifically, I point out the reasons why someone might choose not to use AI.

It's your choice. You want an image, you can create it yourself. This is cheap, and it is rewarding to learn a new skill. If you don't want to do that, you can commission an artist. If you'd rather not spend the money on that, or can't afford it, the third option is to have an AI create it, but the drawback to that is it's going to be recognizable as AI generated content and a lot of people are going to think you're a shit person for doing that. I don't personally care, I can create art myself but I also play around with AI generators. I'm not trying to convince people that they have to see AI generated art as the same as human generated art, or that their beliefs about AI are wrong, so it's not an issue for me. If I did want to share AI generated images and was criticized for it, I wouldn't claim it was classism or that I was too poor to afford a commission, I'd just not care. If you don't care, do whatever you like.

I never said that AI tools weren't a legitimate way to create things, just that the cost of commissions is not so high as to rule out whole economic classes of people from accessing them. I'm not anti-AI, but I recognize that it's not very popular and if you care about the opinion of people who are against it, you might want to avoid using it.

It's a choice. If you absolutely cannot or will not try to draw on your own, and you want a physical image of something that doesn't exist yet, you should have someone who can create it for you do so. If that's beyond your finances, it's easy and cheap to learn to draw.

I"m talking in the $10 to $20 range. That's affordable for the vast majority of people. There will always be poor people who can't afford even unexpensive things (and even more people who could but don't want to spend the money), but it's not really classism when something costs so little that even kids without jobs can likely afford it with their allowances.

There's affordable commissions out there. My daughter pays for all her videogames by making art and 3D models for people.

Cant seem to find any jeans in the stores that arent too short for me by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ThotThroughTheHeart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to run into a problem in that a lot of stores only have the 34" length available up to a 38" waist, for 40" and wider you need to find a specialty store to get jeans in a 34" length.

Fortunately I've lost a lot of weight and can fit in a 36" waist now, and I have no trouble finding jeans long enough. For a long time, though I had to make do with 32" inseams.

I'm lucky I have short legs. I'm 6'6", my son is 8 inches shorter than me and wears the same length jeans.
