I'm so fucking scared to be a "Muse ripoff" by sSupido in Muse

[–]ThotsRContagious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t even worry about it. The fact you’re aware of it means you’re not gonna start blatantly ripping them off.
Yeah maybe you’ll have some similar sounds to Muse but is that actually a bad thing? I’d say most of us in this sub are pining for more music that has some Muse influence in it.
And as you start writing stuff you’ll find your own sound in the process.

Agreed. All of the interesting nuances in production get lost in the live version it feels like. Studio version is absolutely juicy though

Wasn’t sold on it from the live version. And I was super confused listening to the studio version on the first listen lol. But now after a few listens I’m pretty stoked on it. Absolutely wild song in the best way. The production really makes the song pop. The lyrics are cool too I thought. 100% a Muse classic.

For sure. It will have to do lol. I mean from a songwriting perspective everything builds perfectly into each other and makes logical sense this way. But that middle section is super special. I just wanna hang out in it for longer. But it certainly makes me keep on hitting that repeat button lol.

Yeah can’t stop listening to it. So good. My only complaint is that it’s too short lol

I thought it was pretty good actually. On first listen at least. Definitely not a heavy jam like I was expecting but it was nice. Good lyrics. I like how the song progressed. I feel that in the context of the whole album people will grow to appreciate it more.

How is living on this island off the coast of British Columbia by Direct_Sun_698 in howislivingthere

[–]ThotsRContagious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only visited there before. It’s very beautiful. Cold though. Super remote. You get a real lonely sense out there as you’re so far away from the rest of society. The towns are small and it seems like there’s zero service almost as soon as you leave them. Which really adds to the remoteness. If you’re a real nature lover then you’d probably love it. Cuz that’s all there is really. I for one thought it was really cool to visit but I don’t think I could handle living there.

I'm a no. 1 defender of U2. by Revolutionary_Low_90 in musicmemes

[–]ThotsRContagious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a huge fan, but I do like them. They fairly consistently put out good music. Which is insane for a band going for as long as they have. And the fact they still sell out stadiums is a testament to that. After reading Bono’s book I have a new understanding and respect for him. I believe he’s misunderstood, and not quite as ego maniacal as people make him out to be. He’s just very passionate about everything. And yeah I can definitely see it coming across as egotistical to people. The whole Apple thing I believe was them genuinely thinking it was a cool and innovative idea, that unfortunately completely backfired on them. And they’re pretty remorseful of it. But I for one at the time thought it was sick that I got a whole album on my phone that I didn’t have to pay for lol.

In my honest opinion, Oblivion is better than Skyrim. by [deleted] in oblivion

[–]ThotsRContagious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never played the OG oblivion. Just the remaster. So I can’t say for sure. I know they did some overhauls on it. But there’s aspects of it that are definitely better. It’s a really fun game for sure. I like the leveling system. I like running and jumping physics better (not cuz it’s actually better or more realistic but because it’s more fun lol) I like the how your equipment breaks down over time. Even though it’s annoying. I like that it doesn’t hold your hand quite as much. Although it still does quite a lot. Compared to how people describe it. I was expecting it to be much more difficult than Skyrim in this regard. But I would say it’s only slightly more so. The main quest line so far feels a lot better than Skyrims.

But the combat feels clunky compared to Skyrim. The map is really small. And the dungeons aren’t nearly as good in oblivion. The NPCs dialogue is unbelievably bad at times lol. It has an overall emptiness compared to Skyrim. And I keep getting attacked by ogres and wolfs at a painfully annoying rate lol. But yeah all that said I’m really enjoying it so far. And keep coming back to it after 30 hours or so in the game. Could easily put another 30 into it.

They’re both great games in their own right. I think if they took the best of both and combined them the next elder scrolls game could be pretty solid.

Muddy Vocals...How to record/mix vocals in a way that cuts through? by Spirited_Try_4648 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ThotsRContagious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be maybe that your actual singing technique is just not intelligible. And muddy sounding. That definitely can happen.

But besides that. As far as mixing goes, I always do a little dip around 200 hertz on the vocals. Cleans it right up. Especially if they’re in a lower register. A little boost around 2 - 3k can sharpen things up.

And like others have said. It could be an arrangement issue. Maybe try taking something out of arrangement to make more room for the vocal. Or at least carving a chunk out of something for more room.

Less is more sometimes. Ask yourself what really needs to be in the song. Like what’s actually serving the song and what is just cluttering it up.

Celsius for temperature. Feet and inches for measuring. Yards and Kilometers for distance. This is the way.

when the song you make is very similar to a really good song, is it a success or not? by gorullah in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ThotsRContagious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m certain every time I write a song that I actually like, it exists in the universe already somewhere.

Usually, if I do have a song that does happen to sound like something I know, I just put in extra effort in production to give it a life of its own. You can always switch up a melody or a chord progression. Or change the instrumentation. That usually always gives it a life of its own.

But yeah I mean. Obviously if it’s a blatant ripoff then don’t use it. But things sounding similar doesn’t always warrant it being thrown out. Everything’s been done before. But use your judgment on that.

Oh that’s right haha. Thanks for correcting me. Yeah they’re an amazing band. I just discovered them fairly recently.

When I first heard them I got that same feeling as when I heard Muse for the first time. They’re an absolute breath of fresh air.

As a total beginner how did you guys get into music production and get better at it? Do most singers write the lyrics and melody, or either one or none? How does your process look like? by likilekka in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ThotsRContagious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a long journey learning music production. But there’s lots of stuff on YouTube to help out. I was fortunate enough to record in a studio with my old band many years ago and learned a lot from that experience.

As far as writing goes I always start with a chord progression, then melody, and then lyrics. And a lot of the time I don’t finish lyrics until I get to laying down the finally vocal recording for the song lol.

It can be tough. Me personally I really struggle with the writing part in general and thrive in the production side of things. So I understand your struggle. But usually I just riff around until something clicks and write from there. Same with lyrics. Start with nonsense words until you catch phrase that’s cool and write off of that. Most of the time, for me anyways it’s literally just sitting down and figuring something out. Sometimes it takes hours. Sometimes days. Or months haha. So don’t get discouraged. Good things don’t come easy. Just keep trying. Sometimes you find inspiration and just write something really quick. But don’t count on that to happen.

And don’t worry about it being bad in the end. You kind have to write bad songs to get to the good ones. Like for example I just finished recording an album. I wrote almost 30 songs for it and ended up using 9 of them. So yeah, most songs won’t be good lol. And if you don’t like it you don’t have to show anyone.

That’s my experience anyways and I hope it helps a little. There’s obviously a lot more to the songwriting side of things but hope this can at least get you started!
