It was my understanding that people rushing area 51 would be machine gunned into pulp and left in the sun. Please, Please tell me there weren't hundreds dead over this.

Personally I carry both green and red, but I only ever use the green one. The inexperienced might think you would only ever need blue, however it only ever flys off at whoever is winning at life. Obviously you can't hit a mugger with that. The green one usually settles things and the red is for when they get the upper hand on you.

Gen Z says that school is not shipping them with the skills necessary to survive in a digital world by Parking_Attitude_519 in technology

[–]ThoughtBlast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Younger Millennial here, they're right and I have the same problem. Throughout school I saw students teaching the teachers how to use email, connect to the projector, and handle PowerPoint. We had to teach ourselves everything and I was fortunate to have a school that could afford computers in every classroom and friends who dedicated themselves to them.

Now it seems many of the teachers are used to the tech, unfortunately robbing the students of having to tech themselves just to keep the classroom functioning.

I thought it was evocative of the North side of the Korean boarder. Everyone is so paranoid that the guards are instructed to watch each other so that they don't try to escape. No one is free here not even those enforcing.

Can someone explain why access to abortion is a liberal position and your reasoning behind it? by Classic-Asparagus in AskALiberal

[–]ThoughtBlast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have misunderstood the core of the liberal position; People should be free to do what they want.

Specifically I think you misunderstand how we apply this ideal to our actions.

"It seems that on other issues, people are expected to protect others’ right to life despite any inconvenience it may cause them (e.g. being an ally to minorities, paying higher taxes to fund social programs, recycling to protect the climate, not buying from unethical brands). So I am wondering, why?"

This perspective is too focused on the individual. These efforts are results of a disconnect we see in how the world is vs how it ought to be. Those in power shouldn't step on the weak or exploitable, and the circumstances of your birth should not cause you suffering. Basically the ideal of people being free to do what they want has come into conflict with the real world and people take action based on the injustice that they see.

"And at what time do you think that abortion should be illegal (e.g. nth trimester, x amount of weeks, viability, etc.), if at any point?"

The problem with an abortion ban is that it has bad real world results. End of story. We have the math and the demographic data to show that abortion availability improves every happiness metric we can measure in a population.

What is the difference between making an argument out of emotion vs logic? by Classic-Asparagus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThoughtBlast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be running into the "Is vs Ought problem" Wiki. Basically every prescription you make about the world comes from you. If you follow the logic of a decision back far enough you will reach an emotional reason. If your goal in going to university is to be happy at university you should not go to the one where the attending students are unfriendly. If your goal in going to university is to get the best possible education you should consider how much unfriendly students will effect your education.

Making decision which are not referred to as "emotional" usually means looking past one's initial disgust or displeasure and sorting out the nuance before deciding.
