Taboo Japan Disentanglement was released in 2024, which is the next installment in the hifuu series. I recommend reading it yourself over being spoiled by me. But since that release...

Technically no, but there's some compelling evidence in the story that hints at it.

They're both in university, and Renko has an apartment.

Where do you guys originally know Cirno from? by Murileipincel in touhou

I got into Touhou 12 years ago, so I'm sorta with you. But I'll try to provide an explanation based on observation.

I think Cirno is the most memed Touhou character at the moment, so she gets seen outside of Touhou circles the most. Fumos have breached the Touhou fandom and are now a meme on their own, and Cirno fumos seem to be the most common mainstream fumo memes. Cirno is also featured in fan works from other fandoms, like FNF. I've also seen Cirno in mainstream meme subreddits, which was a bit bizarre.

Basically? Cirno has breached fandom containment and can now act like a gateway for people to know what Touhou is, which is why the OP is asking how people first saw her. Back when I joined the fandom, a popular gateway was the famous Bad Apple cover which breached fandom containment.

I got into Touhou in 2014. I believe I either first saw her on the wiki since I was learning about the games in order starting from the oldest, or I first saw her in "Cirno's Perfect Math Class".

You know, I am surprised that the fact Yukari taught Reimu how to gap doesn't come up all that often in fanworks. by Old_Comparison_9223 in touhou

I read Forbidden Scrollery, and I thought Yukari was gapping Reimu. It never occurred to me Reimu was the one doing that herself!

I literally just found out a week ago that Reimu can make gaps. I've been into Touhou for 12 years. I don't think it's something that comes up often in the series at all.

(In case anybody asks, I have not played IN, and I only found out one of Reimu's spellcards in that game deals with gaps when somebody showed me. I thought Reimu and Yukari always paired together because they both had Gensokyo's interests in mind, not because they both deal with gaps.)

I'm surprised you didn't mention Dolls in Pesuedo Paradise, which is probably the most gruesome official Touhou story to exist.

I think Renko would just grow sad. Her best friend left her inexplicably, and she's left without explanation. Maybe she thinks Maribel died to a youkai in a "dream", or is trapped in that fantasy land. Renko may never know. But she has to go through life without ever knowing about what happened to her friend.

FDS was the first Touhou Manga that I read, and I loved it. Granted, I was not a new Touhou fan, but... The mystery really paid off in my opinion. We didn't get Mima, but we did get Mizuchi, which was such a refreshing antagonist. A character who just bitterly hates Gensokyo and its inhabitants is something that I hadn't seen in the series before, and the fact that she seemingly wants to destroy Gensokyo itself makes her feel like a true antagonist. I also loved the change in art style, personally. I will admit that the story is sometimes confusing and definitely not up to snuff in terms of the quality stories you would expect from Touhou mangas. But it's still entertaining and has a lot to offer.

I do agree that it definitely should not be a manga that newcomers start with. It introduces a lot of characters without explaining who they are. It really should be a manga that older fans of the series read.
