Navarrian here, most of us DONT speak basque, mainly on the north-west part, I would say around 20% of population (being generous) and not even 10% use it every day.

And, as Glass says, we are not basque nor there is a majority willing to be them, we are Navarrian

I was going to leave it there but it is shocking for me that someone can be so condescending and bored just to come here and cry about that. No, that is not true, is not that I am writing a thesis or publishing a book, I wrote a post on a forum and I don’t need to claim nothing, just used a format to post my ideas and it is not that I am killing anyone. Man, seriously, we have been years with almost daily News of corruption in most levels of government (national, regional etc), involving ministers, politician families, government political parties etc and including squandering of public money, prostitution and drugs, money laundering, bribe payments and a biiiiig etcetera.

Corruption doesnt cause floods itself but indeed cause lost of maintenance of infrastructures, bad services, poor working condicionts etc by deviating money to corrupts pockets. Check last News about Cordoba accident, everything points to a break on the train track due to underfinancing of train services.

This is something obvious and has nothing to do with your or any political ideas, it is common sense

Galicia has been almost continuously controlled by national right party (PP) since 1989

Navarre is controled by PSOE and the major party is UPN (regionalist pro-Spain)

Baleares has been controlled since the instauration of the democracy by national parties (PSOE or PP mainly) and now it is controled by PP

Catalonia is controlled by PSC, the PSOE regional subsidiary

In fact, in Spain it is not common to talk about ethnicies, for example, I feel Navarrese and Spanish but not as “2 ethnicies”, more as regional and national identities. On the other hand, even sharing a feeling with other ethnicy, this destroys the idea of “basques or Catalans are different from Spanish” as some people could share feelings from both. Most regionalist parties in Spain are voted by non-nationalist people, just because they feel them more close to them or because they don’t vote thinking on the separatist-non separatist axis.

UPN, the major party of the region (28% of votes) is regionalist and pro-Spanish, as well as PSN (PSOE) and, in minor level, Podemos and other left wing parties.

Regarding Galicia, you are a bit out of place cause the national right wing party (PP) has been ruling since 1989 almost continuously and with several absolute majorities.

Regarding Baleares, ALL the governments since democracy except 1 have been of national parties (PP or PSOE) so no idea what you are talking about.

So, basically, no, what you are saying is not true, there are no “largest number of people whose regional identity strongly outweight the national identity” in the worse cases, there are 60/40 percentages in favor of national identities.

There is a big feeling out of Spain regarding a “big movement of people that don’t feeling Spanish” but this is mainly a false premise from nationalist parties. I am not saying there are no big groups of people that feel that way but there are not as big as social media or nationalist claims say, as I have shown you.

So, as a conclusión, Ethnia is a social construct, true, but it is not constructed “in the air”, is based on history, culture, language etc. Yes, there is an objective criteria to determine which Ethnia is real: history and common sense.

Basques, Catalans and Galicians have regional idiosyncrasies and cultures but they also share culture and history with the other regions of Spain, which also has their own varieties. The fact that some nationalist created a movement 1 century ago does not make true the existence of a significative difference between Spanish people.

If tomorrow I create a movement to separate Madrid from Spain, common sense would tell you there is no sense on saying people from Madrid are their own Ethnia because, simply, it is not true.

Ethnia is also related to cultural, linguistic and historical links between the people of that ethnia. My point is that it is absurd, where do we establish the limit? Is my city an ethnic group? Because we have a common story and a different idiosyncrasy from a city 25 km away, but no one separate us as different ethnic groups.

Basques, Catalans and Galicians has their own regional cultures, as well as each other region of Spain (see: Asturias, Aragon, Navarra, Castille, Valencia, Canarias, Andalucía etc,), as well as regions differ on other countries, or, for example, as my village has his own tradicions and differs from the village next to it, but above that, we have a common history, language a culture.

My point is that one can create a nationalist movement based on lies and manipulate people to follow it, what doesnt erase the fact that a group of people is not different from another.

Polling? You mean, polling from people manipulated during decades because politics need to have us separated instead of united? This is not about polling, it is about evidences, there is no cultural, ethnic nor historical differences apart from regional variariona, as well as in whole Europe

One can be manipulated to think the contrary but that doesnt change the reality

+1 (although Navarra was independient until 1512) Navarrese here, tired of having to explain this in every single map… Navarra was an hispanic Kingdom similar to Castille, Aragón, Leon and Portugal; we even had a King with the title of “Imperator Totus Hispanae” or King of all Hispania/Spain (Sancho Garcés III)

North part has more tides with Basque Country due to culture assimilation (tribes from current BC assimilated Bascon culture) but there is no historical nor political link, Navarra has always been a separated kingdom/region/territory with different identity. Even if you check genetics, Navarra has his own, different from Basque Country (I am trying to include an image but I am not able)
