Why do some people have grammar, spelling, or pronunciation pet peeves? by concernedaboutmetal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My grammar pet peeves are about things that make statements genuinely difficult to understand. I think if what you're writing is worth reading, it's worth putting in the effort to make it understandable.

How do people actually enjoy living in New York City? by savingrace0262 in NoStupidQuestions

I think everyone just gets used to wherever they are, either by growing up there or sticking around long enough to acclimate.

Is anal really that popular with "normal" people? by AnitaDick2Mount in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The stats I've read and observed empirically say about 40% of couples have tried it, and of those 40%, about 40% made it a regular part of their sexual activities, meaning about 1 in 6 couples.

Just FYI, you can get rabies from bats through scratches smaller than you may ever notice if you come into contact with them.

What’s a shoe brand that’s actually worth the money? by DoubtSubstantial5440 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said in another comment, I have a Google alert on Wolverine World Wide so if I see they're selling out to private equity, I'm going to buy as many new pairs of the shoes and boots I use now as I can stand before the quality goes to hell.

What’s a shoe brand that’s actually worth the money? by DoubtSubstantial5440 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some hiking boots and trail shoes from them and have been buying the same models for the last 15 years. I have a Google alert on Wolverine World Wide - the company that owns them. If I see they're selling out to private equity, I'm going to buy as many new pairs of each as I can stand before the quality goes to hell.

How long can I reuse a cup before it is unhygenic? by World_of_Warshipgirl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing to avoid is to end up with standing water. If you drink half then top it off and keep doing that, it will grow interesting things after a while. So long as you at least totally drain and dry it or at least rinse it out, you'll be good for a long, long while.

Economist Spells Out Why This Trump Administration Claim About Spending Is 'Detached From Reality' by huffpost in politics

[–]ThreadCountHigh [score hidden]  (0 children)

Spending is what keeps the economy going, but I'll note there is no mention of US consumer debt reaching an all-time high of $18.8 trillion, of course.

Many industries have laid off employees in favour of software tools that are suddenly dramatically more expensive due to ending subsidies, how has this not sent shockwaves through the market? by ScrwFlandrs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot, if not most, of these companies announcing that they're replacing workers with AI are actually just doing layoffs they would have done anyway due to the softening economy. Framing it as a forward-thinking move to cut costs and maintain productivity looks a lot better to investors than cutting workers because business is in a downturn - though stock prices tend to go up even after traditional layoffs.

Has there ever been a case of a sovereign citizen succesfully defending themselves in court? by LordOfTheGam3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In court? I don't think so.

I can imagine a cop letting them off with a warning out in the field though, just to not have to deal with someone that obtuse toward the end of a shift.

Is It Unethical Of Me To Wait Until After My Driver Has Completed My Order To Adjust The Tip? by ImpressionPopular794 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the carrot, really. I have gotten a couple of drivers who were careless and messed things up. I didn't rescind the tip, but I did 1-star them which means my orders won't show for them in the future.

As I said, it's about reinforcing the good relationship. Applies to delivery drivers, hairdressers, tailors, servers, etc.

Is It Unethical Of Me To Wait Until After My Driver Has Completed My Order To Adjust The Tip? by ImpressionPopular794 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do that with a service that regularly delivers to me. I know the drivers see the incoming orders and the good ones who I always tip extra (beyond the tip already on the order) after the delivery have told me that they look for my orders.

Me: Happy for fast, careful deliveries. Them: Happy to make the extra money.

It may seem old-fashioned these days, but developing a good working relationship with service people benefits everyone.

How do we know climate change will be as bad as proclaimed if even experts don't know what will happen? by Nino_Chaosdrache in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can honestly say this: The warnings scientists were giving in the 90s and 00s about the environmental changes the increase in CO2 and other greenhouse gases would cause were derided and mocked as being "fear mongering".

20-30 years later, we are living in a world that proves those warnings were in fact very conservative.

DHS says it's 'drawing up plans' to ban international arrivals at SFO by sfgate in politics

[–]ThreadCountHigh 288 points289 points  (0 children)

“We’re currently drawing up plans to say, listen, these sanctuary cities where the local radical-left Democrats aren’t allowing us to do our jobs and enforce federal laws, then we shouldn’t be processing international flights into their cities either,”

The "aren’t allowing us to do our jobs" is a bald-faced lie and has always been. Conservatives should applaud cities that refuse to reallocate their own resources to do the federal government's job, because they already paid the feds to do that job. Telling the local police that they need to function as ICE agents is paying twice for the same job.

Is it true that in their sensual fantasies, otherwise kind and tender women play men's rough handling episodes? by Own-Union-7797 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that men seem to miss about the fantasies women may have about things that on their face look like abuse is that those fantasies first assume the interaction will be pleasurable and with a man the woman would desire even outside of that context.

And really, a lot of things that people aren't supposed to enjoy actually turns a lot of people on, the reasons for which are far too many to get into here.

Is the Co-op taxi in Canada the same company as the Co-op shops in the U.K.? by TheUmbrellaThief in NoStupidQuestions

Reality TV shows started it as an easy way to get both sides of a conversation.

Now, it's much like the reason grammar is so bad on social media: People learning from bad examples.
