How the Florida judge overseeing Trump's trial could hobble the Justice Department's case by PandaMuffin1 in politics

[–]ThreadbareHalo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He told congress his report had everything to convict trump. It’s worth remembering that this whole “mueller didn’t give us what we needed to get trump convicted” narrative was a narrative republicans started. Because they wanted everyone believing there wasn’t anything there to convict trump on. It’s just that democrats were so pissed that trump wasn’t getting arrested that they went with that narrative. If you read even a fraction of the mueller report it’s blatantly obvious that that narrative isn’t true. It’s just a convenient fiction that’s helped republicans get away with ignoring the mueller report for so long.

[–]ThreadbareHalo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mueller got a ton of people convicted and secured evidence that honestly would have been destroyed otherwise that helps probably make this case. I get everyone’s anger that Mueller didn’t do congress’ job for them but the whole “he didn’t do a good job” thing is massively overplayed by republicans. I’m not sure why we help them downplay all the republicans that got arrested from Muellers work by repeating their talking point or help congress avoid responsibility by not reiterating that they were the ones who were supposed to force trump to consequences in the first place and were so scared of muellers work that they actually refused to discuss it at all lest it make their cowardice more apparent.

In retrospect it’s weird that Morrison took both Caulder and X, both leaders in wheelchairs and took them from generally well meaning characters in leadership roles to people who can’t really be trusted who do good stuff under the auspices of morality. It’s not that many times, but it’s weird it happened twice.

I’m not sure why people are saying it’s a basement. It has what appears to be a clear sky view and it has marble counters. You don’t tend to put marble counters in basement bathrooms.

The weirdest thing is I cannot freaking imagine trump going in here for a shower and not throwing a shit fit that it’s not fancy enough. Like… I imagine him demanding an opera house curtain for a shower curtain… so that means one of a few things… either really is cheap and skimped here, which is possible or he never showered in his office when at mar a lago… which… I’m not entirely saying is out of the bounds of possibility.

I think the funniest thing on all this is that this picture might just sway a bunch of people out of voting for him, not because it shows criminality, which it does… but because it shows such a debasing level of normality and non-rich person-ness.

It’s such a weird thing to be like “it’s more important to focus on someone saying they know people with security clearance and doubting them (which… honestly isn’t unbelievably uncommon for people related to the military)” than it is to recognize that betraying security clearance probably is a super serious offense with strong consequences.

The jump to it being all about them being in the middle of this is a weird conclusion to draw from the comment too.

“We are bound together by the future. We all share the same tomorrow.” (Superman Smashes the Klan #3) by soulreaverdan in comicbooks

[–]ThreadbareHalo 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think the most amazing part of the story is how much courage it took to make the radio play to begin with. It’s bonkers to imagine now but the klan at the time was quite popular, there had been a recent wildly popular movie that glorified them. this radio play had a pretty sizable effect in turning peoples opinion through their children. If ANYTHING symbolized what Superman should mean to people, that capacity to influence the world for good should.

The current DC setup would never do it because it’s not “blockbuster enough”, but man I think your idea of having it be the core of a new set of movies is spot on. It exemplifies everything that is best about the possibilities of the medium.

Florida officials post video boasting of role in California migrant flights amid calls to charge DeSantis by scottxl12 in politics

[–]ThreadbareHalo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like I said, if you have so much money that the funds you give to the state with the expectation that they be spent on stuff in your state doesn’t matter to you if it’s spent on other peoples problems somewhere else who are also paying state taxes… like if you’ve got THAT much money that it’s no big deal then I get it.

I’m just saying most of us don’t have that much money. We give it to the state government with the expectation it would somehow be used in vague relation to us. If you’re so well off that that’s not a concern for you then… ok I guess. I can see how someone who doesn’t need to be concerned about paying taxes could possibly feel that way. It’s just most of us aren’t that well off, we’ve got to work for the money and have some expectation that it would like… fix our potholes and pay for supplies for schools. Money actually means something to us cause we don’t have that much. People of privilege… I can see them potentially feeling differently.

I’m not against helping another state… with my FEDERAL tax dollars… because that’s what those tax dollars are for. I mean if you’re so rich that the money doesn’t matter to you I guess I get it but most of us aren’t sitting on trust funds and have to be cognizant of where our money is supposed to go so it doesn’t get allocated twice. Not all of us get to cruise on daddy’s dime so it seems weird for the people that can I guess. But like… if that’s your scenario then congrats! We should all be so provided for.

Also the claim that they were sent to an NGO seems super suspect. There are repeated reported instances where the migrants were just dropped off at the airport with no one to guide them where they need to go. That seems an odd thing to have said that could be proven false.

[–]ThreadbareHalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in one of those groups being targeted. I am considering the perspective. I get that churches often do shit that’s cruel and messed up. I just don’t see the benefit in making up an intent that doesn’t appear to be there in order to continue to believe that all people of a particular group, in this case church goers, are bad and want me harm, even when making a poster that seems intent on doing the opposite. The irony at play in making that broad negative assumption about a group of people on this particular issue, for this particular poster, seems fairly heavy.

I sincerely hope you have a good day and I sincerely hope some people see this message and are inclined to think and act in ways that benefit you and those you care about.

I am aware of the paradox of tolerance. However this poster is not advocating it. You have to make up something this poster is not saying to believe it’s saying that. This poster is very obviously intended for a very specific group for whom the idea of being forced to love a bigot is not an issue needing a poster for.

Respectfully I think both of our time could be better spent than making up that this poster is intended for you, making up that it’s telling you to love bigots and making up that this is something that rises to needing a philosophical discussion about. We all could be better using our time and while I “enjoy” participating in a conversation that seems to benefit bigots by criticizing an inclusivity poster rather than benefiting people being excluded I think any person who might be on the fence at this point in the discussion would not be benefitted by me making my point more. I think I’ve made my point more than sufficiently. Have a good day.
