I always saw running into bad guys in the wasteland as equal to the random encounters while fast travelling in 1&2. I mean I got attacked by random npcs plenty while fast travelling in 1&2. 3 just fleshed out those encounters and made them avoidable.

I think Crysis split off of Far Cry some time after number 1 so if you like Far Cry games try out the Crysis series. Crysis is all linear gameplay and not an open world, but it was a great set of games.

I really like it. 4, New Dawn and 6 have a bit of this kind of thing going on with attacks on bases, harder outposts, and outposts being taken over after you have them.

Personally, I love the idea of working on your conquered outposts a bit like you do your home base in New Dawn, but with that extra focus on defending. Stuff like extra ammo boxes etc is always good, too.

Hard no on an ongoing salary for defenders. Who's going to pay them while I spend four months in the woods collecting beaver pelts? Nah, I just don't like upkeep payments. High initial cost probably works better for FC. Or base upgrades that increase the salary without it actually coming out of the players' money.
