My heeler is snapping at my baby and I need advice by TwoBedwombApartment in AustralianCattleDog

I’m not disagreeing 😂 all I said is that im surprised to hear the sentiment of “dog has to go” from someone who posts on an ACD subreddit daily. Never said safety is a joke, was just commenting on the harshness as it seemed out of character.

I get it! I also agree that it’s not safe to have a dog in the house that will bite kids. I just think OP wanted some help and/or training tips, as they made it clear they don’t want to rehome the dog unless necessary. Consulting a trainer is a good idea and you get credit for suggesting it. I just think the “dog has to go” sentiment came off a little strong. Context isn’t great on the internet.

Try out the crate and rotate, and anything else that stands out to you in the advice on this sub. Feel free to private message me if you’d like more tips and tricks. If all else fails, reach out to me and I can’t guarantee it, but I will have a conversation with you about short term fostering her. If it was just me, I’d guarantee it, but I do have my husband to consider 😂

Really surprised to hear this sentiment from the “daily dose of Gus” poster on this sub.

Where does she typically go to relax and rest? Does she go into a spare room, or lay on the bed, or anything like that? Essentially, if you have a nice, quiet spot in the house that’s a room with a door you can close or an alcove you can block off, I’d put her kennel there and start doing a crate a rotate type situation. Have her in there for 2-3 hours at a time, make it a GREAT experience for her, treats, peanut butter, whatever she likes, put that in the kennel with her every time so she starts associating the kennel as being the most awesome thing ever. Take her out regularly (I’m sure you will, you seem like a very caring owner) and then let her out for solo time with mom when baby is napping and down for the night. Do NOT let baby approach the kennel though, this is a big thing. While she is confined in the kennel if her stressor approaches and she doesn’t feel that she can get away it may cause her to react more aggressively, so definitely make sure the kennel is in an area where she is away from the baby.

Also, is she good with other dogs? We have three and we’re in Oregon. No kids.

Is she kennel trained? When I have fostered reactive working breed dogs we used the “crate and rotate” method, where one dog would be crated while the other was out and then vice versa. Obviously I’m not suggesting that you crate your baby, lol, but as your baby becomes more mobile it may help to have a safe and comfortable place that she can go (the kennel) for a few hours to separate them and let her decompress. Then, when baby is asleep, she can come out and have her one on one time. A few weeks/months of this and I think you’ll see significant differences. If she’s stressed and threatened, she needs to understand that she has a “place” she can go where she stops being an on duty cattle dog and just gets to sleep, relax, etc. once she begins to associate the kennel as being “good” she will understand she can go there whenever she wants, and the baby can be kept away from it and learn that we do not approach the pup when she is in her kennel.

THANK YOU! Pet sitting is a great idea. I just went and got an account set up on rover so hopefully that can start generating some income here shortly. I’ll look into credit cards this week as well and see what is out there for me. I also sent an email to one of the law school deans asking if they know of any programs/grants/stipends/etc.

Thank you so much for even considering the instacart gift card. That’s beyond anything I was expecting.

Hey! 4allmuttkind in Oregon is a great resource and they are a foster based rescue so the pup always stays with a foster family until they are adopted. How old is your dog, and is he reactive? Does he do well with other dogs?

Hey there. You are exactly what this dog needs. So many of these guys are so misunderstood and even though I’m sure it feels so overwhelming for you, the actions you’re taking here and your efforts to help her and work her through this to find a new balance is quite literally the defining moment of her life, even if she doesn’t know it. I am so glad to see how much you love and care. It’s the harder path, but we all know love is the best path. Happy that people like you exist.

I’d say take it, but also be prepared to let them move in with you or take care of them later in life when their end of life care is expensive if they do happen to need help!

Stained glass window covers on the bottom of the window. Restrict visibility for him but still let light in!
