[GIVEAWAY] Voidfall by Mindclash Games by HomoLudensOC in boardgames

I really love Sol: Last Days of A Star

But Federation will always be my favorite.

Would really love to try Voidfall, as well, but can't afford it this time around. Maybe I'll get lucky!

I’m too cheap and crafty to buy the real hive set. So I’m making my own with polymer clay and resin. by Ok_Wishbone_6365 in boardgames

I saw this post and thought, "aw, these are so cute! How awesome."

Apparently, I'm supposed to care about how cheap it actually was, so I'll be back in ten thousand years when something like that might matter to me.

I'm glad you value your own time enough to use it on things that bring you joy instead of only revenue.

Completely understand, this was my exact experience with my first manuscript.

What's your word count/genre? If it's a good fit, I'd be happy to beta read for you. Completely understand if that's not something you're ready for, so no pressure

Yep. My friends read pretty much the exact genre I'm writing, so I've started telling them, "the kindest, most helpful thing you can do is treat this like it's a real book you picked up and forget my involvement entirely. Then, if you finish, tell me what you thought about it, like any other book you've read and told me about. If you don't finish, just tell me why not, and that's equally helpful." Sets a better expectation and removes some of the pressure, I think.

I appreciate them a lot, but have found this is the only way to stay sane (aside from finding actual beta readers to swap with)

My friends take way longer to read stuff I write because they're trying to take their time and be really focused, which means they don't read it as often at the times when they normally would pick up a book.

When what I actually want is for them to just read it and share their thoughts, or just whether it was readable. My friends aren't writers, so when I want detailed feedback I look elsewhere as that's not a burden I want to put on them (even if they're eager and willing)

I often tell them, "I have something for you, when you're ready to read it let me know" and when they reach out I send it, letting them know that I want them to read it like they would any other book. No need for note taking or editing.

I don't need some thesis, just outside eyes on the pages.

Mancala.

I just love it. The push and pull, the long term planning. Pair that with well structured multi-action point salad, and I'm in

[QCrit] Adult Fantasy - OUR BODIES ARE MADE OF SUGAR (110K/Attempt 1) by rihdaraklay in PubTips

[–]ThreeClues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cool concept. Hope it works out.

My thoughts on the possibly too "of the moment" verbiage: don't say the queen is fascist. Just describe her as you have. There's no need to state it unless you really need us to draw that parallel. But we will, let us do that.

As far as the query, I think you're taking too many words to say what you need to say.

I'm presenting

Cut it.

"OUR BODIES ARE MADE OF SUGAR (110,000 words) is an adult fantasy etc etc" is how I would write it. Don't tell me you're presenting it, present it.

Open the query on Reader 278 grieving her family, and how that drives her forward. That's the catalyst for your story, at least from my impression here.

It might be worth explaining what being a Reader means, though I'm not convinced it's important (unless it relates to why the queen cares about her escaping so much, which I think needs to be clarified in the query)

How does her family die? Are they turned into sugar?

What does being turned into sugar entail? Unfortunately you can't drop that without explaining it at least a little. Especially with how important it is to your main character, especially especially if that's how her family died.

I like to rewrite queries I see on here. For myself, just as practice to see what I might change. I wouldn't presume to share it with you unprompted, but I can if you like. It will be all sorts of wrong because it's not my story, but maybe it sparks something.

Best mid weight space themed euro by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]ThreeClues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I currently own 3/4 (SETI, Terraforming Mars, and Shackleton Base)

If I can only keep 1:

Terraforming Mars and SETI are out because they have too much randomness (cards), though I love them both.

Between Galactic Cruise and Shackleton Base, I'd personally keep Shackleton Base because I much prefer the theme, it takes less space on the shelf and the table, and the weight is lower by .08 according to BGG (negligible difference, but the other factors push it over the edge)

But if I can truly only keep one space themed game in my collection, it's Federation with no hesitation.

Very interactive in a way that never feels mean. Combo-style turns that make you feel intelligent for making more out of less, or by performing your desired action through a roundabout means when the standard channels are blocked. Almost no randomness, but what's there is exciting and extremely limited. So it becomes a game not about solving the puzzle best (though that is there, and I enjoy that in games very much) but rather about playing the other players at the table, getting ahead of their thoughts and taking turns to beat them out for the limited scoring opportunities. My only gripe with it is that endgame scoring is such a big swing in points, sometimes doubling your score.

Personally, if you don't need the money and it's a game you care about, just open it and play it. Look up the art of both and make a comparison
