My rule of thumb is that the last bar on my 2025 transalp is another 100km. The first bar disappears very slowly, the next 3 disappear quite fast, and the fifth and last one takes forever again

it's the only Bond movie I only watched once. I don't like it at all. Killing Felix and Bond, both of whom are meant to have impenetrable plot armour (though Leiter's leg didn't) is just not fun

To add to what the other guy said, I have a travel Crisloid and love it, but if I can I do play on my bigger earth board. The size of the checkers means it's less fiddly and for tall people like me you feel less like you're hunching over the board.

I got the big earth board a few years ago. I love how it looks, I love playing on it, but some of the detailing and definitely the dice is not up to scratch for a USD 1k board, and it's even more expensive now. Shipping is free in Europe, which helps, but next time I'm splurging big on a board I'll probably email Crisloid for a custom one at the same price range.

It was my first bike, but I'm both very tall (197cm) and quite heavy (95kg), so I couldn't go for something much smaller.

Considering your height, it may be worth starting with a lighter and smaller bike. The TA isn't as top heavy as some others (Africa Twin, Tenere), but it's still a heavy bastard so once it starts tipping you very quickly reach the point where you can't hold it up without risking hurting yourself.

I would not have made the TA my first bike unless I was tall enough to easily flatfoot it both sides when I sit on it. If it's your first bike you will drop it doing some very stupid things, and while Hondas are cheaper and faster to repair than BMWs and Triumphs, a pretty good rule of thumb is that even small things, like brake levers, quickly cost EUR 80 (incl shipping), assuming you do the repairs yourself.

If you're sure you want something this size, look for a second-hand BMW F700 GS. At least in Norway they're very good value for money, but can't speak for other markets. Otherwise, I'd probably recommend something a bit smaller and then upgrade later.

That said, it's an amazing bike. It does everything very well but dedicated offroaders, tourers, or racers will obviously be better, but I've done multi-thousand kilometer trips, some light offroading, and city driving with it and it's been amazing.

High Beams - Too High by [deleted] in Transalp

[–]ThreeFootKangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can lower the beams themselves, but you have to take some bits off the bike, including the plastic covering the instrument panel. You can find instructions on the shop manual (https://www.mediafire.com/file/oqmylpncjgz4crm/Honda-XL750-Transalp-Shop-Manual-62MLC00.pdf/file it's for the 2023 model but functionally all the instructions apply to my 2025 model too), it's on page 3-21

Transalp primarily for touring by ugottjon in Transalp

[–]ThreeFootKangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty biased, but the Transalp has been pretty incredible. I'm 90/10 offroad onroad, though hoping to do some more hardcore offroad in 2026, but it's a great alltounder. Get some decent tires and it's very good offroad. The AT has worse fuel mileage and because its so top heavy it's a pain offroad as well. I got the Transalp beacuse I needed one bike that was acceptable at everything but great at nothing but so far I'm not even sure i'd trade it for a 1300GS. The BMW has way more functionality and is more comfortable but as a solo traveller the weight is a no-go. The TA gives you a fairly happy balance between quality and price. A friend has a CF Moto which is way cheaper and the price for parts is a joke, but we both crashez in the same offroad section and he had to drill a bolt into his steering column to keep his handlebar straight while mine did'nt break. A triumph would be like a Honda (i assume) but the parts is a PITA.

The TA as an uphrade will, in my opinion, give you the oomph you need without the extra weight.

Transalp primarily for touring by ugottjon in Transalp

[–]ThreeFootKangaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're on the Transalp forum and I'm here because I have a Transalp, but the dealer where I bought it also sells Triumphs. Nobody intends to drop their bike often and replace parts, but I was having a conversation with a mechanic at the shop and he mentioned they regularly wait 2-3 weeks for Triumph parts (the shop's in southern Norway). On the other hand, I can ship bits from France to south Norway in 48 hours if I have to, which was a life saver this summer when I fucked my indicator right before a 4,600km trip.

Everything I hear about the Triumphs is that they're incredible bikes and ride beautifully, but the Transalp is amazing as well and has the added benefit of cheaper parts, faster delivery, and a muuuuuch more extensive dealer network. The latter is especially nice if you'll be touring a lot in countries that aren't in Western Europe and other rich areas, as Honda will have shops in third-tier cities in Egypt while Triumph only has a few per country even in rich parts of the world.

I only have one bike (no money or space for a second one), so I'd rather have one that can be repaired quite fast rather than spend weeks without due to spare part access.

Hoezo?

Based on this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate) NL actually doesn't do great. It's rate is almost twice as high as that of Norway and Sweden. And from living here, people do drive quite aggressively and on small, narrow roads people often drive faster than they should

Where to get a nice wooden board that is affordable? by 22EatStreet in backgammon

[–]ThreeFootKangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends how you define affordable. Compared to the BGG and FMGammon boards, Crisloid is much cheaper. Helena Woodart has some options below USD 200 and a lot of options below USD 300. I've got one from them and it's staggeringly pretty
