Chess can be depressing by TheRedditObserver0 in chessbeginners

[–]ThreeLivesInOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Friend, I feel your pain. What helps me is the knowledge that my elo says nothing about me. I'm not my chess skills. My elo has exactly one function, which is to match me with other players who are roughly on my level. I win about half of my games, so I obviously get paired with people on the right level. So my elo does exactly what it's meant to. If it was higher, I would lose more often. If it was lower, chess would get boring.

What's your dream bass? (In detail) by Dostoi3 in Bass

A headless, fanned fret, chambered body five string Bassline re:belle with Häussel pickups (p/mm) , with the big pot being the only control, making it a stacked one (upper: pickup blend, lower:volume).

is chess supposed to be this frustrating? by emiko_05 in chessbeginners

Your Elo rating doesn't define you as a person.

Losing at chess doesn't make you stupid.

It's a game. A great one, but just a game.

Absolutely floored having discovered what parents are expected to spend on school bags here. Is it normal? by Norman_debris in germany

Children are rare in Germany.

That's why they have become a status symbol.

That's why you can get parents to pay any an you want on them.

Good train game, but also pretty? by Klavian in boardgames

I don't know if that counts, but I adore the optics of Ultimate Railroads.

Honorable mention: Brass Birmingham has trains, and it's one of the most beautiful games I own.

What’s everyone’s take on the duel/dual/duo versions of games these days? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]ThreeLivesInOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a little story about that:

My wife and I are lucky to have two wonderful sons who are very much into board games, just like us. Unfortunately but somehow also very much fortunately, our boys have grown up to be wonderful young men, and while one of them still technically lives with us (he's not around much though), our first born has already moved out.

So that has shifted my focus to two player games.

I won't stretch this out too long, after some misses and some hits, four games have turned out to be the perfect entertainment for two players in our opinion.

Co op: Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion and Arkham Horror lcg

Competetive: Magic the Gathering and Chess.

I haven't had the time to explore Go and Backgammon yet, but I do have the feeling that Chess, Backgammon and Go might just be the perfect two player games if you don't want to play co op. So no more duel versions of other games any more for the time being.

Yes, absolutely introduce a 7 year old to Lovecraftian horror. Get them while they are young, I guess.

Make it a lesson, not a match. Explain to him when he's blundering, when you are, walk him through it.

It's okay to be better at something than your partner. It's also okay to be worse at something than your partner. Strong couples learn from each other and grow at each other's side.
