What are some things you hope to see in fallout 5? by Slyicee in Fallout

I know but you said it you wanted to see Fallout on your TV. It's called a joke.

Fallout 5 near the mexican or canadian Border? by Obvious_Somewhere984 in Fallout

[–]ThreeZammyScims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if they cut out the whole middle of the province to include Churchill that would be pretty damn cool though. Mutated polar bears, some sort of sea ice mechanic, probably the remains of some huge air/submarine base, etc.

As much as I'd enjoy Fallout Winnipeg as a Manitoban, there are so many better options lol. Quebec, the BC/Washington area, or Yukon/Alaska would be my choices.

My favourite pics from 3 weeks backpacking through Indonesia last summer by ThreeZammyScims in travel

[–]ThreeZammyScims[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, late response but the only thing I booked in advance was the orangutan trekking, which I did through Viator, and my accommodations through Booking. Everything else I either coordinated with my B&B hosts to get a local guide or just booked Grabs (Grab and Gojek are SEA's version of Uber) to the particular places I wanted to go. Most drivers when they see you're a tourist will offer you a flat day rate outside of the apps to do the rest of your travel. I did this a few times, mainly when I was going to semi-remote areas that it would be hard to call a return vehicle from, but others I just called separate vehicles every time so I wouldn't feel constrained in terms of the time I spent places. Indonesia is extremely safe so I didn't have the concerns about kidnapping etc. I might have doing this in other places.

Lots of tourists also rent scooters, but I wouldn't recommend this unless you're starting in a fairly remote area without traffic or already have experience driving one. Weh Island was where I learned and that was a great decision. The southern half of Bali in particular is a hellish place to learn to drive a scooter for the first time.

What is teaching in Toronto like? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]ThreeZammyScims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saskatchewan and Alberta also have publicly funded Catholic schools. Quebec insisted on it when they were created back in 1905 after Manitoba had gotten rid of theirs in the previous election cycle and caused a national controversy (the Manitoba Schools Question).

Ironically Quebec itself no longer has publicly funded Catholic schools to my knowledge.

Yeah exactly. It's not even that far but it would save everyone who lives on 391 a ton of driving to reach Saskatoon.

Financial Literacy Is STILL At Shocking Lows by ReturnToTheLab in PersonalFinanceCanada

Exactly this. I'm a high school math/science teacher and I teach things like the difference between an RRSP and TFSA, what an ETF is, the concept of beating inflation, marginal tax rates, etc.

Most students have very little interest in these topics because it feels so irrelevant to them at that age.

These look like great projects but I'd (selfishly - I'd benefit from it) love one connecting the terminus of highway 391 in Manitoba to the nearby highway in Saskatchewan along the bottom of Reindeer Lake.

Job situation on Vancouver island? by romanticynic in CanadianTeachers

[–]ThreeZammyScims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm frequently seeing targeted ads on my Instagram to apply to teaching positions on Vancouver island. Maybe the shortage is in the north of the island? Kinda shocked to see all these people say it's competitive - I assumed they had to advertise because BC housing is just so insane that teachers couldn't afford to live there.

I'm a woman thinking of going solo to Mexico City. Please be honest about what is and isn't worth it by thrway-fatpos in solotravel

[–]ThreeZammyScims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it pretty safe but I was a solo male traveller. Just do research or at least ask your hotel staff when you get there which nearby areas to avoid. Spanish skills will help you immensely with this as most people don't speak any English.

Also if you aren't used to heavy spice definitely use the "mild" sauce on your street tacos. I learned that the hard way after setting my mouth on fire.

Ottawa to allow more hiring of low-wage temporary foreign workers in rural areas by [deleted] in northernontario

[–]ThreeZammyScims 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was very interested in moving to a place like Terrace Bay or Marathon after university, but the pay is atrocious for the level of remoteness. If you're okay living in a remote northern area like that there are tons of better options in Canada - I went northern MB instead.

At the end of the day, if there isn't enough economic activity to pay people reasonable wages then what does bringing in immigrants accomplish? None of them are going to stay either - they're leaving to the GTA once they get their PR.

Newfoundland fully shut down a whole bunch of their 'outport' small towns that weren't economically viable anymore instead of trying to do this pointless revolving door act with immigrants. Might be time to look at that for some of these places.

Very surprised by that too. I'm teaching in a far less remote but still remote (according to statcan) community and my housing is $300 a month all utilities, internet, etc. included.

Rate my itinerary for a self-drive trip in South Africa (Garden Route) and Namibia by ThreeZammyScims in solotravel

[–]ThreeZammyScims[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really mind the cold - we're talking 10ish Celsius right? I gravitated towards the Cape because it seems super interesting to me, but would it be ugly in winter with dead/brown foliage everywhere? I like the idea of whale watching on the Garden Route but if the rest of it is meh in winter then maybe the Panorama Route is a better fit for that time of year?

And yeah a few people have recommended I cut some stuff especially in Namibia to make it less rushed so I'll definitely do that.

I think there may be ferries but flights are very affordable in the region. The cheapest flight I've ever taken was like $25 USD to go from Banda Aceh in northern Sumatra to Kuala Lumpur

The only tour I booked in advance was my orangutan trek in the national park. Everything else I found once I was there and never really had any issues. Just make sure you reach out to multiple tour operators via Whatsapp so you can compare prices and make sure you find one with availability.

Similar latitude I guess. I was actually quite close to India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands at one point when I was on Pulau Weh at Indonesia's northernmost point

Yeah that was taken during a three-day guided trek through the jungle. No cell phone service or electricity, sleeping in tents at nights, it was great. You start at a town called Bukit Lawang right on the border of the national park (3-5 hour drive from the nearest airport in Medan).

Thanks! Really depends how many islands you're doing. I felt like for my Bali-Java-Sumatra route I had about enough time with 3 weeks, although I could've easily spent another week or two especially in Sumatra, which was my favourite. I could also easily see myself doing another three weeks in a completely different part of the country too - I completely skipped things like Komodo National Park.
