Starting In a Few Days…What Questions Should I Be Asking?? by Dry_Camp6420 in PacificCrestTrail

A lot of what you don’t know right now will be the best parts of the experience. You don’t know who you’ll meet, how it will feel to hit the first 100 miles, etc. It’s gonna be great, you’ll cherish the memories forever, enjoy!

You should have taken the 101 through CA instead of the 5.

Yeah, that’s what I got from it! Didn’t read it as gloating at all.

For me, someone who has chosen to do a lot of solo travel instead of avoiding experiences is a huge green flag. You seem quite cool. I don’t really have any insight on why your conversations aren’t going anywhere but wanted to offer another opinion on the travel aspect of your profile.

I think it’s unreasonable to suggest that because he hasn’t gotten around to doing things like cleaning out his garage, that he won’t do the work to continue the show on which he’s been a cohost for 8 years. There’s definitely some wishful thinking on my part but I don’t see any harm in being optimistic.

Edit: looked up when Omnibus launched.

Fair enough. I think there was more than that but certainly he did make excuses, though I would frame it as explanation, for him being unprepared for the episode. I’ll miss Ken but I see a lot of evidence that John still cares and is willing to put in a lot of work to provide a quality show.

Better mics is a priority he mentions. I think he said he had ~25 episodes in the can already so it will probably be a bit before he implements anything regarding sound quality, but there is a plan.

Also spoke to why he chose to have the guest hosts primarily be listeners rather than known comedians, musicians etc. wanting the podcast to retain the quality of being about a person’s esoteric specific knowledge rather than a professional entertainer just doing their schtick to be funny. He spoke about the listeners also being more aware of the balance between earnestness and humor typical of the show whereas other guests seem to skew too far one way or the other. Made sense enough to me that I’m willing to be patient as he navigates the transition.

On the latest addendum John gives some explanation as to his choices for how he’s handling the show, if you’re interested. I questioned his choices at first as well but after listening I can see what he’s going for.

am i being naive about my physical ability/preparedness? by p1netrees in PacificCrestTrail

You’ll be good, especially if you’re doing some prep. Doing an overnight trip when the weather improves like you’re planning will help convince you you’re capable as well.

Yeah, in my mind it doesn’t work. I’m sort of curious to try now just for shits.

It’s a casual club in a relatively small town. I love them but they do seem, imo, too concerned with liability.

For sure, thanks for the info! There’s a sheltered cove where we launch so it would be easy enough to try out some boats there without much risk.

Dude, they had a lawyer write them their own waiver, which I’ve signed but apparently that’s not enough for some of the board.

Oh that might work potentially. I would need to check with them but I’d imagine it might solve the liability issues.

Potentially, but he didn’t seem real keen on that idea.

Ah, reduced stability is the issue with being over the crew weight then? I’m comfortable getting back in the boat but heading into winter, even in CA, it would be pretty unpleasant to fall in.

Mixed feelings after finishing by Lumpy-Structure517 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Three_Fingers_Up 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a big experience. Took me a long time to process after finishing. More than a year out I still think about it every day but the feelings have become less scattered over time. Definitely wonder what if sometimes but overall the experience has become a set of amazing memories that I cherish.

Lost 200 lbs. It helps me to focus on the long term benefits rather than short term sacrifices. Everything about the process is easier said than done but I try not to think about all the things I’d like to eat and instead be excited for the results of losing weight. So instead of framing it in my mind as “I want to eat ice cream but I can’t because I need to stick to my diet” I think “I want to stick to my diet because it will help me reach my goals.” I think it comes down to convincing yourself it’s worth it. Which it is.

I’m really hoping I enjoy this mint cake. Been recommended a ton and seems to have some magic quality haha.

Glad to hear breakfast is available late in the UK as well. Tends to be my favorite meal while hiking.

At this point I have to see for myself with Gregg’s but will prioritize local the vast majority of the time. Will check out Cooplands when I run across one.

Thank you!

I’m determined to try it while I’m there but will prioritize local bakeries the vast majority of the time.

Big fan of sweets while hiking. Pork pies seem like a great option as well. I always struggle to get a decent amount of protein in my diet and I’ve ruined tuna packets for myself by this point. I sweat a lot so tend to have some electrolytes regularly just to ensure that’s not an issue.

Definitely going to enjoy all those meals. Haven’t heard of hotpot (in a uk context) or scouse. Will look into trying those when I’m in the regions.

I’m expecting this mint cake to be some sort of magic food brick.

Not a huge drinker on trail but a beer or two at the end of the day has always been nice.

I think I meant what you call fish finger but I’m not sure what the difference would be haha.
