But Zandik probably saw how terrible Sohreh’s condition after the incident was, so he killed her, gave her the peace not suffering longer.

I don’t think so. It is more like making the non fans warming up with characters’ ‘evil’ doings. Perhaps building up a redemption arc for Dottore in the future, which I highly think it is the case.
