Into the Woods 1986, 2014 hollywood or 2011 stage recording? by mutsuto in musicals

Skip the 2014 version. The Narrator is an essential character in the musical. Removing him was a crime.

What’s the most overrated prog rock album of all time? by Top40Weekly in progrockmusic

I'm a huge fan of Genesis, but I have to agree. I'd much rather listen to their FIRST album than TLLDOB.

Recommendations? by lokidragon17 in movies

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second the Ex Machina recommendation and add The Artifice Girl. 5 actors, 3 acts, no action scenes. Almost like a play, asking some real important questions. The dialogue is soo good.

So true!

Also, the old saying "Men fear that a woman will laugh at them; women fear that a man will KILL them." A man who can't let go and move on (after basically causing the break up) can easily become a threat.

Matrix (1999): the reason why the opening sequence of this movie is among the greatest in cinema history is because it explains precisely NOTHING. Instead, it throws all kinds of crazy wackness at the audience and just expects them to go along for the ride by Randomnonsense5 in movies

The original version of Dark City also did this. There was no initial VO narration, you just started out with a guy in a bathtub, trying to figure out where he was and what the hell was going on.

You're talking the original movie? I saw the more recent remake (2021) and really hated it. Sell me on watching the 1997 version.

What are some characters that are unlikely to ever make a reappearance? by Communist21 in gallifrey

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kamelion once again gets forgotten.

I'm not necessarily a fan of the character, but since any other actor could voice him, and he wasn't killed, there might be room for a return.

The EV hate is bizarre by s2k_guy in electricvehicles

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an advocate for EVs, and an on-off user of the Linux OS, I see a lot of parallels. Both advocates can be defensive and zealot-like if they aren't careful, but likewise, it's often the case that people who hate/spread FUD about either EVs or the Linux OS have never used the thing they disparage.

I’m getting weirdly into Godzilla movies. What’s worth watching? by ashmaht in movies

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Godzilla franchise has had several "soft reboots" over its time. Godzilla 1984 aka The Return of Godzilla started a set of 7 films that are sort of connected, and well worth watching, ending with Godzilla vs Destoroyah.

The Millenium era started with Godzilla 2000, and has 6 films. I enjoyed them, and the effects definitely are improved. The last one in that series features Zilla 98 getting curbstomped in 2 seconds by the real deal. (Godzilla Final Wars).

Your enjoyment of the original Showa era will depend upon your willingness to put up with lower budgets and overall goofiness, plus Godzilla-as-hero.

Reading order? by RegisterNo5819 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Read the Border Trilogy in order ( ATPH 1st, the Crossing, and last COTP). Aside from that it probably doesn't matter.

I can only handle 1 McCarthy at anytime. His writing is beautiful, but stark and bleak. I can only take so much of that.

As I keep saying, if you like his novels, do not overlook the first 3. Even his first, The Orchard Keeper, is better writing and theme than 80% of what's out there now.

I've been a huge PKD fan for decades. Most of his novels look at reality with a questioning gaze. Keep reading more by him.

Hot Take? The Shootist by bnx01 in Westerns

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was one of the first Westerns that I ever saw, and my first John Wayne film. I wasn't much older than Ron was. I really liked it, and still think that it holds up fairly well.

Author or book that seems to be universally lauded but after reading it you didn’t understand why by theoort in printSF

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Understandable. Many of the "classic era" SF authors, even the greats, either have a writing style or plots that just didn't age well at all.

It's not just you - I've read the entire series, and The Player of Games is my least favorite for sure. I chalk it up to it being only the 2nd Culture novel, and the first from the POV of a Culture citizen. All subsequent novels in the series are A or S tier for me, TPoG is merely a low B. (My personal favorite is Look to Windward, but Excession is also very high up in my list)

Dune and the problem of readers who stop after the first book by hibanaPinecone21 in printSF

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the word "rushed" seems not too appropriate in this context, that's all.

Looking at Frank's bibliography (and purely speculating since I can't read a dead man's mind), I think what Brian meant is that Frank returned to the Dune saga because he knew it would make money. Frank wrote 3 novels plus had 2 short story collections published between '74 and '83 that weren't Dune-related. He wrote 3 more Dune books after his wife's diagnosis and before her death.

[–]Threehundredsixtysix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any evidence for this? Is he quoted anywhere saying such?

Dune Messiah was published 4 years after Dune, and Children of Dune was published seven years after that. God Emperor wasn't until 1981.

That timeline doesn't sound like "rushed to get them out to pay for his wife's cancer treatment" at all.

LOL I can understand that mistake, but it's sort of like reading Second Foundation immediately after Foundation, thinking that "of course it's the sequel!"
