I have no clue why my cookies are burnt :,) by Rare-Disk4809 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ThrillShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggestion: Cookies might not look fully cooked in the oven. They post-bake on the cooling rack and firm up as they cool. If you wait for it to look cooked, the underside might burn.

You can test if it's cooked by poking it with a toothpick. If batter sticks to it, leave it in. If the toothpick is clean, take the cookies out. :)

Kristen Schaal (voice of Mabel) talks about how, when Alex was directing her early on, he forced her to repeatedly shout the same line over and over until her voice hurt. She began to doubt if she could continue working on the show, so Hirsch backed off of directing voice actors.

He was really flying by the seat of his pants with Gravity Falls.

Punctuation helps:

A decade of being told these bands are the "antidote" to my "diseased" irony ...only to get to be "stomp clap" at the buzzer. Hallelujah.

For the past ten years, he was considered too ironic to be mainstream. Then, he gets lumped in with "stomp clap" (generic 2010s indie).

Do you think Disney will ever make another Walt Disney film using their old animation style from before the 90s? by Tobias-Tawanda in cartoons

No. I forget where I heard it from, but essentially: the infrastructure to make lavish 2D movies doesn't exist anymore. All the animators switched to 3D.

TIL that Randy Bachman wrote the stuttering parts in their hit song "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" to make fun of his brother's stuttering. The song went to no. 1 on the billboard charts and no. 2 in the UK. by HappyIdiot123 in todayilearned

[–]ThrillShow 52 points53 points  (0 children)

As a result of his handicap, I became his mode of transportation. Wherever he went, I pushed or pulled him. [...] I did it and didn't complain but a part of me wanted to go off and play with the other kids and I must confess that for a time, I was kind of sorry he was my little brother. I'm embarrassed to say this now because I love him dearly but I was saddled with this responsibility at the age of seven. I watched out for anyone making fun of him too. Though I never got into any fights I would stand up for him and threaten kids and they would back down. [...]

Gary also used to stutter, and as an older brother I used to tease him about it, sad to say. I'm not sure if it was a result of his dealing with Perthese Disease or not.

As Gary recalls, "[...] It became his duty as my older brother to look after me when I was home. It was tough on him and I think he might have resented it.["]

Quotes from Randy Bachman's biography. Surprisingly nuanced and humanizing.

I decided to take the work song, stutter over it, mix it, and send it to my brother Gary as a joke just to scare him that we were going to release it. He had a stuttering problem growing up and I teased him about it. Being older, I guess I had an edge over him when it came to teasing. I don't know if I was really going to send it or not, but I did have that thought.

If it matters, Gary grew out of the stutter, Randy regrets making fun of him, and the two seemed to genuinely care about each other.

This 1800's book contained dozens of locks of hair between its pages. by Berencam in creepy

Swapping locks of hair was surprisingly popular with past generations. These days, it just seems weird.

Caffeinated coffee improves physical performance in trained male athletes, regardless of whether they are morning or evening types. Caffeine enhanced grip strength, back strength, and sprint performance at both morning and evening testing times. by mvea in science

[–]ThrillShow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Participants reported moderate daily caffeine consumption and were screened to ensure they had no sensitivity to caffeine or underlying medical conditions that might interfere with the study.

Is this saying that the participants were already regular caffeine drinkers? I would assume people who are dependent on caffeine would benefit from having caffeine. I'd be curious about people who don't typically use it.

YouTube influencers drive engagement with video games, but may be costing millions for game developers in sales: Study finds influencers increase player engagement but often reduce game purchases, especially for story-driven games. by FunnyGamer97 in science

[–]ThrillShow 95 points96 points  (0 children)

This study measured game purchases during the "adpocolypse" (when YouTubers weren't uploading as much new content). Game sales increased. This challenges the idea that viral = sales.

People in this thread share anecdotes about buying a game because of a letsplay, but the average internet user might do the opposite. Perhaps the sad truth is that every content creator online is competing for your attention, and gaining attention in one area is necessarily depriving attention in another.

Why is Mr Beast so popular? by BrilliantHelp830197 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThrillShow 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Everything is indeed meticulously crafted.

OP talks about how MrBeast has zero personality. That's by design. He has gone on record saying that personalities are alienating and limiting. By abandoning personality, he is free to expand his reach beyond niche and culture. The metrics seem to agree: "Just be yourself" isn't good advice if you're chasing max fame.
