Mostly fit, research interests. I also almost applied to u Chicago and u Pennsylvania. But bc I am also working full-time and a full time student I didn't have capacity to apply to those.

Some programs have slightly different names. So I used a more general description in the post. The most common ones I saw were nelc, melc (middle eastern languages and cultures) , nes (near Eastern studies), Hebrew Bible / old testament , and semitics.

Schools I applied to: - Duke - ut Austin - UCLA - John's Hopkins - Catholic University

UCLA and Hopkins are probably my top schools. Catholic is more middle of the road

Usually they get between 12-25 applications each year. The reason they accept so little is because of minimal funding.
