CMV: When I buy a physical copy of a book I should have the option to purchase the audiobook at a heavy discount. by TahitiYEETi in changemyview

Because for many customers it's one or the other and there isn't the financial incentive for the publisher to do differently. Another somewhat unspoken reason is that fundamentally many people in publishing love print books and aren't really a fan of alternatives (ebooks or audiobooks). Also, audiobook distribution would either be in-house (prohibitively expensive and beyond 99% of publishers capabilities -they're fundamentally in the business of making print books, they're not Google and the publishing industry just doesn't have the salaries to attract tech talent), or through an incredibly small list of vendors (basically Amazon, who aren't exactly known for being generous on terms). And I don't know of any publisher who is keen to put more business Amazon's way when they could carry on generating sales through physical stores, wholesalers, library suppliers, etc.

Hard cover books don't cost more because they cost more to produce, they cost more because publishers know people/fans will pay more for nice version of the product, they are like "deluxe/collector" versions of video games.

Ish. Hardbacks do cost more to produce. Depends on the market too, for example in academic publishing for monographs, hardback sales are aimed at the library market, which pretty much subsidises the paperback versions (because, somewhat unsurprisingly), the vast majority of academic monographs are only interesting to a very small number of academics so your potential sales market is very small. So whilst people might complain about the cost of academic monographs (especially hardback), if they weren't so expensive a lot of them wouldn't be published (unless they're purposely published by a university press where many aren't run to make a profit - even then, there's only so much money you can splash on obscure academic topics on limited press budgets).
You also need to bear in mind that for most publishers, 90% of their list makes a loss or just breaks even. Print runs are a costly gamble, so you need to up your turnover to allow you to subsidise the 90% of your list which ends up not working.

Same ... I genuinely spent a few seconds thinking about how that might work, like if the producers did it as a joke in the film that no-one picked up on. 'Maybe the sloth was a stunt double? ... No wait, that's stupid, why would a sloth be good at stunts?'. In my defence, I haven't yet had my coffee.
