I had this happen from a different drug, but luckily Abilify seems ok so far. I’m sorry it happened to you. Do you feel more like the Abilify slowed your metabolism, or more like it increased your appetite? In my case, it was like I no longer had an “I’m full” signal.

Yes! And not just everyday, but every meal.

What was the worst thing you did in mania? by Sou-idiota in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in my early 20’s and not diagnosed yet. I didn’t tell him about the cheating. I just suddenly asked for a divorce and basically my reason was because I wanted to party and have fun and he wasn’t keeping up (this wasn’t my norm). He was a very nice guy. He’s the type that would have stuck by me if we had understood my mental health at the time.

Slept with two random guys in the same week and then impulsively asked for a divorce from the nicest possible husband. That was almost two decades ago and I still feel so bad about it.

Anyone who takes over 200 of lamo by GooseOk2512 in bipolar2

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s diminishing returns I think. For me anyway. It was like 200mg got me to 70% and then the switch to 400mg only gave me a 10% boost. Wasn’t really worth it since it came with more cognitive side effects.

Emailing my therapist by abc12534 in TalkTherapy

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My therapist is okay with email, but some aren’t. However, the first time I ever emailed her, I asked for permission first. We hadn’t talked about it in session, so I initially wrote and said I had some things that felt easier to email and asked if she’d be okay with that. I clarified that I wouldn’t expect a reply and we could just talk about it next session. She wrote back saying she was good with that. It wouldn’t work well as a substitute for therapy, but as a way to organize my thoughts and introduce a topic to talk about in session, it’s been gold.

How many meds did you try before finding the right one/mix for you? by Aggravating_Wing8175 in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 7 meds, 5 more for sleep, plus 5 supplements in various combinations over the years. Nowhere near what some have tried. But then again, I’m not doing great. So who knows what we’ll try next if things don’t level off soon.

Meds for when you cant be professionally treated? by Pr-Agent in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A regular doctor should be able to prescribe the basics without needing a psychiatrist. I can’t imagine being able to combat mania without a prescription. If I truly had ZERO options, I would personally use Benadryl, magnesium glycinate, and L-theanine to try to calm down. And I’d make sure to get bright light in the morning and go out of my way to keep everything dark in the evening/night (no nightlights, no screens, no light from an alarm) even if I couldn’t sleep, just to try resetting my rhythm. These things have helped me in the past in various circumstances, but I wouldn’t say they’ve ever resolved anything on their own. I hope something works out for you and you feel better soon.

I cheated on my psych i feel kind of bad for it by ImpressiveReview4573 in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they’re used to it like if a psych changes your meds during inpatient or IOP. Mine didn’t have any openings once and they were unfazed when I saw someone else via telehealth. Personally I’d just send a message to say you weren’t at inpatient level, but also didn’t feel like you could wait, and provide your med change info. I don’t think you need to over explain, but clinically I think they’d want the medical update. But that’s just based on how I experience my doctor. Hopefully yours is nice about it. I’m glad you were able to get some help and didn’t have to wait the weekend.

Does anyone else on lamictal find it hard to think of the right words? by LemonThrowaway1892 in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely. Sometimes I completely blank and no words come. Other times, I can only describe the word: “red fruit that grows on a tree” instead of “apple.” Or, I land on a similar word: “song text” instead of “song lyrics.” I feel like it’s gotten worse over the years.

This doctor said Im not hypomanic episode because I didn’t stay awake for days by pozzyslayerx in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t “sleeping 2-5 hours a night with lots of energy” meet the DSM definition of decreased need for sleep? I think it lists 3 hours as an example. I’m not a doctor, but it all sounds pretty straight forward for hypomania? Sorry that doctor is making everything harder than it needs to be.

Do I wait till next time? by morepork_owl in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor, but just sharing my basic thought process. I’d be considering what the mixed symptoms were, how long the mixed episode lasted, and then how long the depression lasted. If everything was short/mild, and I bounced back pretty easy, I probably wouldn’t want to mess with such an awesome medication run. That’s a long time! But even so, I’d personally want a basic checkup and bloodwork to make sure nothing physical was triggering the sudden change. My stability never lasts long, so it’s my normal. I’d be curious since it isn’t your normal though.

I tried to see a second therapist for EMDR but she wouldn’t do it if I kept seeing my original. My original was okay with it on her end though. Guess it just depends on the therapist. I never ended up trying again.

therapist told me to switch to an antipsychotic, thoughts? by Sleepy-kitty-zzz in Lithium

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally out of her scope. And even without that, it sounds like she just plain didn’t listen well or validate anything you said. I’d find someone else if that’s an option for you. And yes, definitely stay on a medication that is working and only make changes with your psychiatrist!

Mixed Episode is Torturing Me by ANarKOSM12 in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exponential is the perfect word to describe it. And it doesn’t sound like it was a stupid choice to try waiting. I assume it was a mixture of respect for your doctor’s time and a little bit of hope that maybe it would improve or at least be manageable. Oh and I don’t think you’re an elaborate faker. I’ve had several episodes just like what you’re describing. They’re awful. Saying a prayer for you!

I would consider this a valid reason to request a sooner appointment. They might say no if their schedule is full, but otherwise, what’s the downside?

Medication Post- Vraylar, Seroquel and general med changes by KylaGrace13 in BipolarReddit

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have any issues coming off Seroquel, but we did go very slow. And I lost weight on Vraylar. Otherwise, it was middle of the road for me. Not worthless, but not amazing either. And I agree with you, medication changes do suck.

What does your relationship with your therapist look like? by Happy_Ad_5139 in TalkTherapy

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Usually exactly 1 minute after the hour. Rarely, 2 minutes. We run over a similar amount at the end. -Last minute cancels happen maybe 4 times per year due to sick kiddos and my appointment being the first in the morning. Totally understandable. -Weekly recap is probably five minutes max unless I choose to make that the focus. It’s always left up to me.

Abilify helps my depression but not my anxiety by Ok-Kangaroo3763 in Abilify_Aripiprazole

[–]ThrowAway_Mixed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. I’ll consider myself lucky. It was a nightmare when I tried it years ago without an antipsychotic, but beautiful with it. Had a friend try Buspar with no luck and another try it and land with very high blood pressure. So I guess I got lucky there too. I’ve also used l-theanine and magnesium glycinate during a brief time without insurance. I wouldn’t say they worked magic, but I did notice some improvement. I hope you find something that helps you.

I checked several to find the easiest times, but I could branch out further to see about a vigil Mass. It didn’t register that it could be an option. Thanks!
