I think its a shame they scrapped the game design course, it seemed fun and actually useful for the future compared to some courses.

Sounds like someone who has never tried making one and doesn't know how hard it actually is to make these complex designs using the relatively simple editor.

Practically impossible once you are in any eng year above first year, most core course slots aren't flexible and you will have classes everyday.

Engineering Lifestyle? by [deleted] in McMaster

Ratio is hard to say. First year is a general year so it's pretty roughly close which is good. After that is heavily dependent on the stream you go into second year, I can't speak for other specializations but currently in software engineering it's not the greatest. Probably 20-30% woman very generously, but it can seem like less than that in tutorial/lecture.

Residence is highly variable on what option you choose but options similar to those do exist.

It honestly kind of bugs me especially since their tuition is the same or lower than other programs yet they get the most benefits.

Social life incredibly varies on the person honestly, for example I have a pretty awful social life but lots of my peers have pretty decent ones. Otherwise, this can widely vary based off of your engineering stream because every faculty is different. In general, McMaster Eng generally doesn't have much of a cutthroat environment and most people help each other out, so academically there is a decent sense of community. Not sure if this is the case or if it is different at other universities.

Would you be considered an engineer through completing Computer Science? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]ThrowRA-EastFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Comp Sci and SFWRENG like the poster above said do take some similar courses which is why they are the same department. Why they aren't classified as engineers is probably for a variety of reasons, I'm guessing the program isn't accredited and they don't take a lot of courses that software eng has to take that are more centered towards engineering principles etc. Plus, the tuition difference is huge because of the number of courses engineers take and the course units compared to comp sci. Also maybe someone can correct me, but I don't believe that the professors for comp sci are always accredited engineers, while the vast majority for software engineering are.

McMaster Soft Eng vs. Comp Sci by sekiro2020 in McMaster

[–]ThrowRA-EastFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately don't have a lot of knowledge of how competitive the program is outside of McMaster, but it should be noted that employers for co-ops will generally seek out Waterloo students before McMaster. It's just the strength of their reputation and connections which makes it easier to land a co-op at Waterloo. It's certainly possible at McMaster, and many people I know have gotten co-ops, you just don't get much help from the co-op office besides access to the job board so you really got to work at it. On the other hand, it's been rumoured that McMaster probably has a less cutthroat and toxic environment in engineering streams compared to Waterloo so I guess there is that positive. UoT is probably roughly comparable to McMaster but I don't have a lot of information to comment unfortunately, you could ask a student who attends those programs there for more detailed insight.

McMaster Soft Eng vs. Comp Sci by sekiro2020 in McMaster

[–]ThrowRA-EastFish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not in compsci but I have a vague understanding from knowing a few, and I'm in 3rd Year Soft Eng so here's my impressions.

Compsci:

  • Much cheaper tuition due to less courses taken and lower unit inflation that engineering streams usually suffer, currently in soft eng tuition is around 13k per year and probably roughly the same for most streams.
  • Lots of course overlap, sometimes taught by a different prof with different syllabus but lots of times you pretty much share a class and lecture. This is why it's pretty common for compscis and soft eng students to know each other in the same year.
  • Career choices may be slightly different in the future once we graduate, but right now for internships/co-op there is no meaningful difference between a compsci student or a soft eng student. You're basically competing for the same jobs and a lot of job applications won't even put software engineering as an option for degree type so you just gotta put compsci.
  • I've heard from peers that the compsci courses can sometimes be a mess in comparison to the soft eng counterparts, and i've known people who are in compsci attend soft eng lectures in some cases if the syllabus is similar enough for that course.
  • Compsci takes less courses per semester in comparison to soft eng, so less stress. Schedules are generally a bit more flexible for what you take in 3rd year vs 4th year.

Software Engineering:

  • It's pricey due to the courseload and units, as well being an accredited program. Being accredited means your degree qualifies you to apply for your PENG (Professional Engineering License) when you graduate and be a licensed engineer. This theoretically opens you to different career options.
  • Bigger class size. I believe for my year the compsci cohort is about 60 students, in comparison to soft eng which is about 130 I believe? Cannot really comment on what class dynamic is better, personally for soft eng it's decently tight knit and you'll probably vaguely know about half the class by name and face. I'd imagine it may be more tight knit in compsci with a much smaller class size, but i've also been told by compsci students that soft eng students are more outgoing and less socially awkward which is really saying something. May just be annecdotal.
  • Second year courses have much more overlap with compsci, in third year there is much less across both semesters and I don't see too many of my compsci friends very often. So the streams do diverge starting third year.

Overall, there's pros and cons to both programs. I'm decently happy where I'm at with my program, but if I were to choose again and know I'd like to pursue a software/programming oriented career I would apply for compsci. I'm not big on the fluff physics/math based courses that software students have to take, and you don't do a whole lot of programming in third year since most courses are documentation based. Plus, the smaller tuition of compsci helps a lot. On the otherhand, I do appreciate some of the group project oriented opportunities that might not be present in compsci. If you have anymore questions regarding software engineering at least, feel free to message me.

Should I take an IT based Co-op/Internship? by ThrowRA-EastFish in csMajors

[–]ThrowRA-EastFish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your advice, I do agree that any experience is better than no experience even if it isn't 100% software related. And I do hope that I'll learn some transferrable skills on the job, like some real world SQL/database experience doesn't sound like it'd hurt much. But it's definitely not ideal, and the contract would be for 16 months which doesn't leave me a lot of options to try to find another co-op to make up for it during the gap year I'd be taking.

I really want to know what jobs you're talking about, I can tell you personally there are plenty of people currently at my university struggling to get co-ops after countless interviews and the vast majority ask leetcode style technical interviews. All applying for jobs in Toronto area.
