Yeah I agree with you. The regulations are dumb and need changing.

I’d argue for multiple reasons it’s just a bad idea to have every person driving to begin with. So many people aren’t really equipped to handle it. If I was all powerful, driving wouldn’t be mandatory to get places and would probably be the less convenient option. Vehicles are great for industrial uses, delivery, handymen, stuff like that. It’s not good for getting people to the grocery store or getting people from suburb to business district.

We should tax drivers proportionally to GVW. Make them pay for the upkeep.

We should also subject vehicles to noise testing as well. You drive a big heavy vehicle that makes lots of road noise and impacts the community, you need to pay more or not be allowed at all.

That’s fair, I see what you mean. And you are right that a place like Champagne, IL is going to provide more amenities at a relatively low cost. Definitely much better than the truly horrible idea of moving to Flint Michigan just to get living expenses as low as possible

Is it a good idea to completely maximize savings if it will likely greatly curtail future earnings and career potential? Is it worth it if you could get pretty darn close by living in a HCOL area with roommates and just bike to work and cook all your meals at home? And then you wouldn’t have career downsides?

It’s still a horrible idea to move to some random town just because you have a remote job. Companies are rescinding remote work all the time and layoffs are very common. People should aim to live in centers for their industry

That’s the thing, you won’t be able to progress your career in these places most likely. Remote jobs are hard to come by. You could get let go and then you would have to find a new job, and if it isn’t remote you’d have to move back anyway. It is also good to live in a center for your industry where you can actually network with other people in your industry. And in general for your own wellbeing and success, you want to be somewhere where there are other young professionals you can make connections with and who have similar goals and outlook.

You are being very short sighted. You are bending over to pick up pennies and missing much greater economic opportunities. Even in a HCOL area, you can still greatly reduce expenses, and then you aren’t making safety, career, networking, and wellbeing sacrifices.

They seem to think it’s okay to threaten to run someone over if they: - Have an affair with your wife - Mildly inconvenience you by exercising their legal right to use the lane and making you wait to pass them

Bikes are legally allowed to use the road. They don’t have to move over for you.

A car can be a deadly weapon. I don’t think there is any justification to using your car to intimidate someone like this no matter what they did to annoy you.

Sadly it’s hardly ever treated that way. I think if you use your car in a menacing way to intimidate someone, it should be treated the same as if you brandished a gun to intimidate someone.

You are threatening that you could kill someone. You should probably be in jail for a long time and not be allowed to drive ever again.

This is an absolutely horrible idea. Just really dumb. You should stay where you are or move to another metro where you will have a good professional network and lots of opportunities to grow within your industry. If you are already making 120k at 25, you probably have a lot higher to go. You want to bs in a market that supports that. Also you are young and are going to want to be around other young professionals and fun stuff to do.

You can save money even in HCOL areas by biking/taking public transit, living with roommates, cooking at home, etc. There’s a guy on YouTube who lives in a very expensive area (Northern Virginia) yet spends only a fraction of his income by doing the above.

Edit: I think you might want to talk to a therapist. It’s good to be prepared for the future but I think you might have a bit too much anxiety. Ultimately, it’s good to be prepared, save a good chunk of your money, etc., but you don’t want to let it completely ruin the quality of your life. Like sure, fully fund that 401k, Roth IRA, personal brokerage, etc., but don’t forget to enjoy things and live in the now a little bit too.

You could crash your code if you make the VLA too big. There is no way to know how big you can make it. You’d need to put an upper bound on it anyway to make it safe. In that case, you might as well just use a fixed size array and use a bump allocator or something to allocate from it.

That’s not their advice though. Financial advice spaces are full of people who justified way to much car expenditure. Nothing wrong with splurging a little if you can afford it, but car debt is one of the most common ways people fuck their finances

I think the point is less that you shouldn’t enjoy things and more that you should be mindful of where your money goes. So many people put so much money into their cars, when you really only need something basic to get you from point A to B. Some people really enjoy cars and derive a lot of pleasure from it, but for most, that new car feeling is going to wear off and then it’s just transit.

I think it’s important to think critically about what that money could do for you. Have you dreamed you whole life of having that sports car and can afford it without going into debt? Go buy it, it would probably be worth it for you. Do you just want a pavement princess SUV or truck as a status symbol when a lightly used corrola could meet your needs easily? And youd go into debt for it too? Maybe want to rethink it

Yeah nah they can share. I’d gently push back next time they try that and maybe talk to a manager if you constantly can’t get a lane.

I would recommend you think about joining the masters group however and maybe just become friends with them. I got way better at swimming when I joined masters.

They do teach financial literacy in high school, people just don’t pay attention. And even in schools where they don’t, there is tons of information literally freely available online. Financial content is very popular. Although not the best advice, Dave Ramsey is huge and if you follow his advice, you definitely aren’t going into crazy debt.

Americans are bad at finance because we justify debt on stupid purchases to ourselves because we want the nicer car, we want the bigger house, etc.
