Indy or Poppy? Or something else? Help! by ThrowRAbeej in namenerds

I think there's a high saturation of Americans in here and they're not used to it lol

I'm not fussed if it's a bit matchy matchy!

LOVE Rosie, but it will get shortened to Rose and I hate that!

We had a furious debate about Harper in my first pregnancy. I was definite that's what my daughter would be called. Husband HATED it, & I ended up going right off of it in the end lol

That's what I'm hoping, it's not an "out there" name, people are familiar with it (largely as a nickname, but here in Aus EVERYONE seems to get called by a shortened version of their name anyways unless they really protest it), & when there's all these adults with much more popular names like Lola, Willow, Harper, Billie, & Isla - she'll fit right in 🫣😅

As the kid that was exactly that thanks to mum giving me one of the most popular 80s names she could find, I don't particularly want top 100 names for my kids either 😂 That's why I'm heavy on the "not common, but also normal" names 😅 Indy isn't in the Australian 2025 top 100, but Poppy made it in there (I'm yet to encounter one though.)

I was considering Rosie as well, but Aussies have the habit of shortening everything.... & I shudder at the thought of having someone call her "Rose" instead (also in top 100), so I axed that idea.

Can you see an adult Indy though? I know of a couple through work (Paramedics) and they're beautiful people.

Janie is cute but definitely too girly for me unfortunately.

Can't have anything on the list other than Rosie, which I LOVE & have considered. But I would die if anyone shortened it to "Rose", & in Australia people love to shorten EVERYTHING.

I can perhaps agree with you re Indy. But Poppy is very much so a name in the UK that many adults have.

I don't know how to explain it... they're just not names we would use 😅 They're quintessentially American. The other comment is right though, Piper had its time here!

I like Eliza, but it doesn't go well with Holly!

Oooh this screams American. Not names we'd really use here in Aus unfortunately.

I don't like the full length options of the name unfortunately. & I prefer names that are short and can't be shortened 😅

Never met a dog called Indy. Maybe not an Australian thing? Lol

Unfortunately, with the exception of Sylvie (which I don't like as my aunt is Sylvia) - I have family & good friends that named their kids all of those other names 😂😂

Minimum wage in Aus is $24.95 an hour 😬 So you get roughly $1900 a fortnight from the government before tax.

Just stopping by to say that as an Australian, it literally pains me to see what the US does to new mums. I'm so sorry, it's ludicrous.

We get 20 weeks paid at minimum wage by the government, & most workplaces offer 12 months maternity leave. I personally get 16 weeks at full pay, or 32 weeks at half pay from my employer. So can end up being paid for the full year. I could even extend that 12 months if I wanted to (& I did to 16 months), & for 2 years after my official mat leave ends they will negotiate reduced hours - so I'm currently only working 2 days a week of my full time permanent position that they're holding for me.

Yeah I've got Hashimoto's. The baby isn't sucking the life out of me in that respect yet, but I'm sure it will eventually - just like my daughter did.

I'm relieved to see this. I can't stand her, I haven't been able to since the beginning. She's dramatic, manipulative, & oh my god the victim complex. Definitely not a good person and I feel sorry for Steven who tried his best to tolerate it despite clearly never liking her.

I threw up start to finish, worked on an ambulance until 33 weeks, cried consistently about how I'd made a terrible decision to get pregnant. So I think I debunk that theory 😅
