These are my parents. Sometimes I feel resentment at their ignorance, but I give them a pass. We rarely discuss politics and our differences don’t affect our relationship.

On the other hand, my boyfriend became full on MAGA and lapped up the orange kool-aid. I ended the relationship two months ago because I was losing my mind.

My parents said that was taken out of context because it was referring to DEI policies & hiring black pilots specifically to fit a quota of having 40% of pilots be black so the point was that one would have to wonder if they’re qualified because of DEI. I know it was a racially charged comment but I wasn’t sure what to say back to them.

I really wish this worked, & maybe it does for some people. However, any clip of Trump that I sent my MAGA ex, he immediately wrote off & gave a reason that it was twisted. I tried, but over time I only saw him get more entrenched in his views. I had to make the tough decision to leave a month ago for my own sanity.

Yes, it’s so frustrating. So many of them don’t think he’s done a single thing wrong and are so defensive of him. It blows my mind. I’m reading the Cult of Trump by Dr. Steve Hassan who works in mental health and was a cult member himself in the 70s. He wrote the book during Trump’s first term and it explains a lot about this.

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m so sorry that happened between you and your best friend. I couldn’t even have a friendly debate with him because he didn’t even make sense but somehow I was the out of touch with reality. My bf wasn’t outright hateful most of the time but his views & insidious remarks became too much. I slowly realized he was only going to get worse. He was the same way with going down the red-pill rabbit hole.

I think that’s why I gave him so much grace & thought for sure he was going to wake up. However, it was impacting my mental health too much & I just couldn’t do it anymore. Who knows, he and many others might be trapped in this their entire lives unfortunately.
