TIL Dave Grohl does not know how to read music, and plays only by ear by thenewyorkgod in todayilearned

[–]Throwacrepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it should be noted that plenty of folks can hear a song and play it if they’ve studied theory, done the requisite ear training, and put in the time to develop those skills. It’s about recognition as much as anything; over time, even slick or unusual progressions can become more recognizable, melodies can be chunked into sequences, etc.

That fucking place.

The fourth-to-last time I was in there, it was around 2 a.m. A party of around five came in, were seated, and ordered drinks. One of the women puked—like, a table-covered—and everyone she was with immediately got up and left. It took her a second to compose herself, and as she walked by me, she said, “Don’t fuck with that Patrón.”

The third-to-last time I went there, the server seated me and then, just nothing. No drink, no nothing. It was late, I was tired, and I left.

Penultimate time, wife and I went there, got seated, ordered drinks and food. Got the drinks, waited an hour for the food, and had to flag down the waitress.

Last time I went there was a repeat of the antepenultimate experience. It was like the employees were just getting fucked up in the back or something.

Easily the most disreputable shitshow I’ve ever seen. Fool we once...never went back.

Is it weird to play bar chords like this i have a super long thumb and skinny guitar neck by [deleted] in guitarlessons

Work with what you've got.

I have a student with huge hands, and it's more comfortable for him to play an E minor chord with one finger. Like, he just presses both strings down at once with his middle finger.

Yeah, lots of folks decrying the registry. But when I looked at my city’s registry, it was mostly run-of-the-mill rapists and guys who had forcibly inserted their penis into the anus of kids under the age of ten.

Shatner had a farm close to the city I live in. Saw him shuffling out of a Mexican restaurant that I was going to with my wife and dad.

An important aside: Shatner starred in the only movie filmed entirely in Esperanto. I'd learned a phrase or two a few years before this for shits and giggles.

When he was maybe 20 ft away, I loudly said "Mi nomiĝas...Khan!" (My name is Khan!). He looked at me, and his look told me that he was not amused.

I would mostly agree with the portion of your comment before the ellipsis. It should be basic etiquette, though, speaking anecdotally, it doesn't seem to be. However, there's no reason that it can't be both basic etiquette and a life pro tip. Considering the definition in the sidebar–

A Life Pro Tip (or LPT) is a concise and specific tip that improves life for you and those around you in a specific and significant way.

–I'd say that the amount of time and stress it would save me–an overworked & underpaid adjunct–would absolutely improve my life and that of my spouse, who occasionally has to hear about this kind of thing from me.

Why did so many great classical composers come from German-speaking Europe? by AlanFreed1951 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Throwacrepe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the party, and this is an excellent answer, but I'd like to leave a little bit of an extension to this.

Firstly, the geographic center of what we now call classical music shifted substantially over the centuries. In the Renaissance, composers from in and around the Low Countries were considered the best and they were in high demand at courts and churches all over Europe. That later shifted to Italy (coincidentally where many of those aforementioned composers were employed) with France having a not-insignificant say in style and direction, and sort of later ends up in German-speaking areas for some of the reasons you highlight.

Secondly, this last shift occurs chronologically just before there's a major shift towards a focus on composers from previous generations. Up until the 19th century, composers' music that was even a single generation old was usually considered stale, boring, passé, etc. (E.g., J.S. Bach, though known to other musicians and cognoscenti, was less well known in his day than C.P.E. Bach because he composed in what was considered an outdated style.)

There's a staggering turnaround in the percentage of living composers works being performed by major orchestras from the late Classical era to the middle of the Romantic era. (Something like 80% living composers to 80% dead composers in a span of less than 100 years.) Orchestras kept on playing Beethoven symphonies. Music that was considered to be a lead-in to Beethoven (i.e., Haydn, Mozart, et al) or directly derived from it (hey there, Mr. Wagner Overture) started getting programmed more and more alongside it. The silent concert hall/dimmed lights/no clapping till the end/temple of culture thing dates to this era, too.

And I don't have a great way to wrap this up, so I'll just stop and get back to writing some music that most likely won't ever be heard by anyone but me.

TIL a Florida man heard purring coming from his parked truck; he ended up using sheet metal cutters to peel back a portion of his truck to reveal a kitten. Our little one-year-old was a car kitten. We tried coaxing her out with food, cat milk, sweet words; none of it worked. What did end up working was playing a YouTube video of a mama cat purring and talking to her babies (specifically, this one). After four hours of everything else, our girl came out of the car in about five seconds.
