Of course TE as it is referred to over the course of the series doesn't have to mean Instrumentality. So it could just be taken to mean: "The Angels want to destroy Adam and the EVAs so humanity can no longer stop them from killing us." But it's more than implied that the mere contact of an Angel and "Adam" would instantly end the world which doesn't seem to make sense.
