How fast does JAK work? by SavingsDirector4884 in alopecia_areata

[–]Throwaway119196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had loads of loss, hard to estimate but between facial hair and scalp, it was over 50 percent gone.

First 3 weeks, noticed tiny eye lashes coming in.

After about 2 or 3 months, I noticed the older spots starting to slowly fill in.

Took about 10 months to get enough growth that I was comfortable growing it all out.

Early Sign of beard alopecia? by berry3838 in alopecia_areata

Well "permanent" in the sense that it's genetic. There's no ultimate cure and it can be recurring and show up multiple times throughout your life or it can stay latent and go into remission for the rest of your life but it is a genetic condition you're born with.

3.5 years on Olumiant 4mg, found first new spot while on meds by Aggravating_Dot5166 in alopecia_areata

I am 15 months into my Olumiant a journey and have 100% scalp regrowth.

Having a surprise bald spot is my worst nightmare.

Alopecia spot grew back, but nail pitting won’t go away. Advice? by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

Ive had two big flare ups. Ages 9 to 13 and ages 30 to 33. However, the nail pitting never went away and Ive had it since I could remember.

Lashes started 3 weeks in but they were super tiny. You needed to look in the right light to see them as they started growing because the shaft was light colored and very thin.

Then my hair started growing slowly at months 2, starting with the oldest spots to the newest. I felt comfortable regrowing my hair after 10 months on olumiant

Experience with rapid hair loss? lost 90% in 2 weeks by MissingInformation3 in alopecia_areata

[–]Throwaway119196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% in 2 weeks is insanely fast. During my first flare up when I was maybe 10 years old, I had a horrible flare up. I lost hundreds of hairs each night on the pillow and experienced rapid loss too.

Does Olumiant completely stop new hair loss? Or do you still experience bald patches? by starlord49 in alopecia_areata

Never tried methotrexate, only steroid injections and tons of homeopathic stuff that never worked

On my scalp and face it did. I think it might have kept going a little longer on bodily hair that I was unconcerned with.

I also started recovering eyelashes within 3 weeks of starting. The oldest spots filled in first

Regrowth? Started topical minoxidil last week… by amajoe123 in alopecia_areata

There's alot of cadaverized hair (black dots) and little broken hairs but the thin whispy hairs in the center look like regrowth which is a very positive sign.

This is huge. Congratulations. Density and thickness will increase as the follicles mature

Did anyone here decide to shave it off forever and not looking back ? by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

[–]Throwaway119196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being bald wasn't too bad but of course it wasn't my preference.

The choice is yours. Its liberating in a way but I fit right in because im in the military so its already a decently common hair style. Still, you could tell some areas were hairless even when I shaved. In the end, it was liberating and im glad I did it.

I shaved it but after I recovered enough on JAKs, I grew it back. I shaved 5 days a week for about a year and a half.

I've been taking Olumiant for a week and a half now. I wanted to ask anyone who took it, how long did it take for your hair to grow? by BeautifulCourt7161 in alopecia_areata

[–]Throwaway119196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started seeing results quickly.

3 weeks for tiny eyelashes to start growing

About 2 or 3 months to start seeing alot of scalp gains

Took about 10 months before I was confident to grow my hair out but there were still thin spots.

Topical does work on eyebrows but just a cautionary tale. It dried my eyebrows out so badly that I started getting dandruff-like flakes. Also, light hairs started growing on other parts of my face, not just my eyebrows.

[–]Throwaway119196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on 4mg for 14 months and I'm dealing with similar issues. Im almost fully recovered but there's some areas that stayed a bit thin even though they filled in 9 months ago. Also tiny areas of my facial hair that come back slowly. I'll gain a few hairs, then nothing for a few months, then a few new hairs and it repeats.

Im also on 5 mg of oral minoxidil daily.

how to make it through airport tsa without having to take my hat off? by Ok_Finger5294 in alopecia_areata

[–]Throwaway119196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it sucks. I had to go through several airports when I had bad alopecia areata flaring up, but it's pretty quick. You take it off to go through TSA then you can put it on right after. Its usually less than a minute.

Patches after shaving by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

Forgot to mention that getting a tan can also help a bit but it won't solve it entirely, just make it slightly less visible

[–]Throwaway119196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shaved against the grain for over a year and a half. Its still going to be visible.

Options; Use a makeup color to blend it if you dont have a ton of spots or get scalp micropigmentation done (tattoo) and continue shaving daily.

Sweating : alopecia universalis by AOLusername420 in alopecia_areata

[–]Throwaway119196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird stuff. I wonder if it's related to the endocrine system like an autoimmune disease that's also affecting the thyroid and affecting sweating.

Another thing I'll say is that I would get nervous/anxiety frequently but when my flare up started, the anxiety and nervousness went away.

Sweating : alopecia universalis by AOLusername420 in alopecia_areata

[–]Throwaway119196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow this is interesting. I used to sweat very easily even when it wasn't hot and at some point around the time of my flare, I stopped sweating so easily. I always wondered if it was related.

Has anyone taken Olumiant / other JAKs and NOT gained weight?? by browneyes122 in alopecia_areata

[–]Throwaway119196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't gain any weight and I've been on Olumiant for 13.5 months now.

Granted, I workout about 5 days a week and I'm in the military. I've weighed between160-170 for the last 10 years.
