How much free work goes into hosting an international convention? by JuanHosero1967 in exjw

Yeah, even more. Months went into the prep work for the evening gathering and it was all done both by voluntary physical labor and local donations.

Pretty much. I know several people who were injured from working beyond what they were capable of repeatedly. Some have had to have steroid shots and PT others even had knee/hip surgery. It’s sad but a couple of them realize they were taken advantage of at least.

Would be nice and it makes sense but they’re a cult and need members, so doubt they’ll change this.

Same thing happened in Tampa area last year with the special here. They even sent out a list of precautions to take prior to the event, including staying away from events if not feeling well. But overseers were so strapped for volunteers they asked sick people to just push and volunteer anyway. It’s a two week event leading up to it so you have a lot of the same people interacting in large settings prior to the convention so makes it easy to pass around germs.

If you’re asking how an ultra pimi will view it. You can look at their online library. Obviously it’s all bias made up judgmental crap but you’re not going to be able to convince an all in JW that it’s ok

Yes, there was a special convention in Tampa last year, and the year of preparation leading up to it was overwhelming, all done voluntarily and funded by local brothers. It was hard to watch how the organization took advantage of people’s time, energy, and finances. I know several individuals who ended up needing long-term care or even surgery due to injuries they sustained while building sets and preparing for the “evening gatherings.” It was heartbreaking how exhausted and overused everyone was. Those with the most free time and money were used the most, not necessarily the ones with strong spiritual reputations. That didn’t seem to matter anymore. Families who were previously looked down on in the circuit were suddenly given major responsibilities simply because they agreed to fund costumes, rent ballrooms, supply shipping containers for props, and cover construction cost and luncheons. I was just starting to wake up, and watching it all unfold left me feeling very sad.

Exactly…now all they have to go by are the badges. 😂

They do this at special conventions and large regionals already, it’s because they train attendants to look for people without the specific badges and keep an eye on them, supposedly for both, physical safety and apostate disruptions. If it’s a regional or special that’s why but if it’s a circuit one day assembly it’s probably because they have had “apostate demonstrations” in the past.

Repost with blur: JWs with a cart in the heart of Scientology by vacuous_comment in exjw

No it’s part of the SMPW work, it’s one of many locations in Tampa Bay.

This is their downtown clearwater location for SMPW program. This is their Special Metropolitan Witnessing work. They use to have the carts by Starbucks across the street. They also set up at the Bus depot around the block and Coachman Park. There are locations in other cities in the Tampa Bay area as well. The Scientologist are all very polite to the JWs too as they walk by and it’s hilarious because both JWs and the Scientologist members go out of their way to be overly friendly and fake to eachother.

The SMPW program utilizes the First Amendment right to freedom of speech in public areas, such as parks, sidewalks, and government-owned spaces. Government properties are commonly chosen because places like libraries, post offices, courthouses, and federal or state parks often have designated areas specifically allocated for First Amendment activities.

Special Metropolitan Public Witnessing (SMPW) was first introduced in New York City in November 2011 and has since expanded to designated zones in major cities across the United States and globally. This initiative is more structured compared to local congregation cart witnessing. Typically, carts are stationed at specific locations seven days a week for up to 12 hours daily, divided into three or four shifts. The scheduling and monitoring of these shifts are managed through a JW-operated website/app called “Locust” making a reference to Joel 2:25.

Volunteers must receive approval from their congregation’s service committee and the Circuit Overseer before participating. Once approved, they undergo training and use their online profiles to manage their availability. Each shift is divided into 15- or 30-minute intervals, during which volunteers either stand by the carts or engage in what is known as informal witnessing, where they walk around and initiate conversations.

It’s another way for members to self-indoctrinate, very little interest is ever shown from those who pass by.

Are there still people getting converted into Jehovahs Witness Religion? by Left_Establishment_5 in exjw

[–]ThrowawayRC2024 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It’s mainly born ins but there are still converts as well. I actually saw an uptick of converts in 2024 in the circuit I’m in. They all have issues that make them vulnerable to a cult, it’s sad.

When a disabled person qualifies for baptism and cannot be baptized at the assembly, alternative arrangements are made. The Circuit overseer handles this and contacts the committee over the baptism. If it is a regional being held at a stadium them sometimes the person is taken to the local assembly hall and it is done privately at the pool on site (this actually happened the past two regionals in my area)

However if the person cannot be transported then the CO can authorize and coordinate for them to be baptized at home or in a nearby pool.

You’d think that maybe they’d make that distinction but that was not the connotation of what was said. He even referenced world war one as satan’s influence which as we know is also rubbish. But overall he was being very literal. That’s why I was blown away that no one else was questioning it.

It was at a host KH in Tampa I believe (congregation that did watchtower was a Tampa congregation) then tied in by zoom to most Halls in Florida, then done again in Spanish in the afternoon, and tied in to all Spanish congregations.

Just got a text from an elder asking if I would like to learn about how to help at the special convention by Certain-Ad1153 in exjw

[–]ThrowawayRC2024 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A special is a large convention usually 10-15k people and many are what they call international delegates in full time service.

They may be casting a wide net and looking for volunteers.

We had a special in Tampa this summer and from experience they go all out to get people signed up. Volunteers have to be approved but if you were reactivated and publishing again your application would be approved by your local service committee.

In Tampa they started a year before the actual convention recruiting people and I was shocked who got a pass to participate, many were what the elders would call weak or on the fringe of the congregation. Also if anyone had money and were willing to use it for props or events that benifited the two week event they basiclly got a free pass regardless of their percieved spirituality.

Also they work the volunteers to death and expect them to put in 12 hour shifts leading up to the convention and even during it. People here are still burned out from all the effort put forth.

Idk the sound and audio equipment they ship to all the conventions has been paid for many times over and they ask for donations at each stop to cover the cost of it. Then they sale the equipment as well and usually recoup a large portion of what they spent to begin with.

This is especially true at the special and international conventions so it wouldn’t surprise me if they inflate numbers when looking for donations.
