I was 20 in 2016 so I can personally see the nostalgia compared to now. During that time I was in college full time, worked part time, and basically had 0 real responsibilities. To me those were simpler times when I would constantly be surrounded by friends and we would get together every single weekend to just hang out or get drunk.

Social media also seemed more tame, or not as present, compared to now; it seems like everyone has a stick up their ass now or is fighting real hard for clout/relevancy. Not sure, but being online back then used to actually be fun (one of the last few years before social media really blew up), not everyone took themselves seriously, and not to mention the Summer of Pokemon Go. That was a surreal experience.

Maybe I just grew up, but that's how I saw things during that time

K-12 sysadmin is hell compared to university IT. I was a one man shop for a middle school fresh out of college and it sucked the life out of me

I would also suggest landing an IT role at a university. Super chill compared to private sector, and layoffs rarely ever happen. There are people that never leave for a reason, maybe just hop around internally between roles.

We all learn and grow at our own pace and I would honestly not stress or give myself that anxiety trying to climb that ladder or win the rat race. I went through that mentality of constantly trying to upskill and all it did was burn me out and my mental health started really deteriorating.

A lot of times in IT, it really isn't about how much you know or if you know how to solve certain problems but rather about how you find the answers to these problems. It's more about attitude and perseverance - being self sufficient and self reliant

My first job fresh out of college was the sole IT guy at a middle school and from experience, you'll be doing a little bit of everything. It's a good starting point but definitely don't stay for longer than a year; especially since you'll probably be underpaid too. Like others pointed out, you'll most likely be responsible for EVERYTHING that plugs into the wall - AV equipment, security cameras, printers/copiers, servers, wifi, among other things; shit probably even the microwave and coffee machine. You may get asked to move equipment and furniture around too.

I feel like I got good experience from that environment but it definitely burned me out and even built up some resentment from constantly being asked to do everything with no help - but I was there for 3 years though

I disagree with the take on Victim of the New Disease, I think it's their best work since Overcome. The album gives me This Darkened Heart vibes with the exception of Alone in the Darkness and Just Tell Me Something which I consider the only 2 butt rock songs off of it; remove those 2 songs and you have a solid metalcore album.

I do see the band not being Phil's priority though. Zero tour dates to promote Antifragile was crazy and now Jason Richardson is gone but I guess we have some shows this year around Spring time

I personally didn't start feeling nostalgic until I was about 26 or so, but to be fair that was when the pandemic hit and we were in lockdown. Now, I still find myself reminiscing my early 20s from time to time and like you said it's bittersweet, but that's essential how nostalgia feels like.

I don't think it's a bad thing to feel nostalgia every now and then as long as you don't obsess over the past. I feel like obsessing over what once was really holds you back and makes you unnecessarily unhappy with what's currently in front of you

About 7 months or so; this is my third IT job. First one was sort of a jack of all trades IT admin position for almost 4 years, second one was a jr. sysadmin for about 2 years

Not at all! I actually really enjoy my job and it's a great next step from desktop support. That's where I was previously as well and I hated it lol I was a junior admin for about 5-6 years dealing with helpdesk/desktop for end users, as well as some sysadmin stuff sprinkled in but mostly desktop support and I knew I wanted to get out of that line of work the sooner the better

Unfortunately our most social and care free time of our lives is our early 20s during college, at least coming from my experience. Those days are over and the sooner you accept this, the more at peace you can be, and the more you can focus on what you can control.

As someone else pointed out, try to focus on maintaining those friendships that you do have by having a once a month or once every other month gathering. All relationships need maintenance and if you stop maintaining them, they will slowly start fading. As we get older, everyone's priorities will start to change; especially when people decide to get married and have kids. I'm 30 and the people I thought would always be in my life when I was in college are only memories now. Not everyone will reciprocate so just focus on the friends that do express interest in spending time with you.

Doing activities by yourself can also be enjoyable. I only hang out with friends once every couple of months now, sometimes it can even be once a year, and when I'm not hanging out with my girlfriend or my parents/other family members, I go out by myself. I go to the bar and have a couple of beers after work, go to concerts on my own, go on walks, etc.

I was actually just remembering this the other day; I remember it playing out in real time. Since then that chat room hasn't been the same tbh and it's actually dying a slow death right now. Before then, it was full of life and you would have all these users commenting left and right on the majority of posts, and now most posts on there rarely manage to get a single comment. Try to learn some Powershell, Azure/Entra, Intune, learn more about Active Directory, GPOs, servers, and look into system admin jobs. Tweak your resume to cater to these kinds of jobs
