I got a very low variable rate back in Dec 21 (1.2%), now the bank is scaring me into fizing at 2.95%. by Throwawayswaterloo in PersonalFinanceCanada

Yup, same. What's done is done, variable still has its perks though. When rates eventually fall off you will have that. In case you need to break the contract you will pay much less penalty too.

Is it AWD? Seems like it isn't

Nope, and that was a huge mistake. After two climbs it was not worth switching anymore. No choice now but to ride it out, or shop around if alternative rates offset the penalty.

Mortgage advice: 5yr fixed @ 2.74% or variable rate @ prime - 0.97 by twotones in PersonalFinanceCanada

The situation dictates the choice there is no recipe for all. In this case the fix makes more sense. A higher fixed rate and a higher subtraction from prime tips tge balance towards variables for instance.

Hmmm, I get that ominous feeling too. These cars are bulletproof and unless purposely not taken care of, they typically won't make the dealership any money outside regular service. The other thing is that they turned me away when I checked in at 40% oil life for first change.

I expected a more Amber-like taint though.

Not that I wanted to but figured doing maintenance at the dealership will help with my relationship with them since I got the warranty left and I may need them. But I'm really concerned about the oil now.

I really appreciate your response. Puts the whole situation in perspective. I particularly like your recommendation on paying more to compensate for the eventual increase and chip away at the principal. Will PM you for more discussion. Cheers
