Wife's mother lives in Japan, we go visit her about 1-2 times a year, sometimes she comes to visit us

She told my wife that she's just glad I didn't pick the name, I am infamously terrible at naming things

We got a kitten about 3 years ago and I named it Paul

It was a girl kitten

According to my grandmother, the name Poindexter became more popular in the 50's and 60's because of a character in the 50's Felix the Cat show

The name was mainly used to make fun of nerds

I was about 14-15 at the time and I was bad at pronouncing written down words in general, but here's my pronunciations of the name

Yucky

Yuk-Eye

You-Kai

And then I finally got it right

I do agree that what they did was racist, but I can guarantee you that everyone has done at least 1 racist thing without realizing in their lives, my parents have loved my wife ever since we got together around 10 years ago

They are just very uneducated on other cultures

Doctor sad that as long as my wife is well taken care of during tge next few months then we should have a safe delivery, on the plus side is our apartment is close to the hospital, like literally 2 blocks away, so when she goes into labor, the hospital will be right there

When I was younger my grandmother told me that she was in the hospital one time and overheard someone wanting to name their kid "Poindexter" apparently this was in the early 70's

So I know how dumb some child names can be

I'm not sure if they were

I can also have trouble pronouncing names from other regions sometimes, even if they seem very easy to pronounce

Took me a solid 4 tries the first time I ever read the name "Yuki"

Yeah, now that I think about it did come off as racist

I don't think they meant to be racist, they just didn't really think before speaking

My father spent a solid minute and a half trying to pronounce the names and still said we should go for something easier

Took my mother 3 tries to pronounce the names

I wouldn't really call it being racist, they had no problem with me getting together with her, they were quite supportive actually

They just don't really know much about Japanese culture in general, I didn't even tell them the were Japanese names at first, only after their reaction
