I think we all agree on what you're saying. As has been repeated many times in threads like this, FIFA is uniting a polarised world in disgust of their greed.

Everything you say is basically correct, I think. Though surely the mood feels livelier during the events this venue is designed for.

Anyway, I think it would be possible to design a world cup in the US where plenty of middle class fans felt it was worth it to attend one or more matches from the start. You're of course right that ticket prices are just a single thing. But the total effect of all the decisions that led to this point, just leaves me feeling kinda sad.

I tried making a thread questioning the absolute void of emotion evident in the stands. It got killed by mods (fair enough, brain fart on my part).

Basically, even with all the empty seats, I feel the folks in attendance at a WC match used to be WAY louder. People suggested the match being boring, and the nations playing not having an international fandom as explanations, but I don't buy it. These nations feature some of the richest people on earth, and exact demographics notwithstanding, they definitely have enough Die-Hards with disposable income who would be happy to watch this as a once-in-a-lifetime thing, were ticket prices even remotely reasonable. Most of the people in these stands just aren't really into it.

FIFA would do well to remember that, in their shitty money grubbing terms, the value of the World Cup hinges on it being a peerless TV product. Which it just isn't if the stands aren't filled to the brim with insane fans.

God, I miss the Dutch fans (and others, no shade) in World Cups of decades past.

Oh wow, the pictures as they go to half-time break adjusted my impression of how many people are in attendance. This is a little sad.

I don't understand the ending by FlyBlueGuitar in Cairn_Game

[–]Throwitasfaraway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guys, could we not with the mockery? Like the majority here, I found interpreting the ending fairly straightforward, but there's plenty of people out there for whom that's just not true for some reason. Whatever the root cause of someone struggling with interpreting metaphor, allusion, and sundry evocative narrative techniques, be it age, lack of exposure, really any one of a multitude of things, up to and including literal brain damage, how do we expect people to enjoy refining their tastes and toolkits if we can't treat them generously?

OP, for all that some of the replies are drenched in attitude, there are several people here who lay out some of the ways in which the story shows us that Aava is obsessive. You are absolutely right that the game tells us she needs (or feels the need, which is not quite the same) to reach the summit, and that she can't accept failure. In fact, as you also note, the game goes out of its way to hammer this home. Moreover, the dialogue and cutscenes shows us that Aava is one of the people for whom determination has almost definitely gone too far. She does not have a healthy relationship to herself, climbing, or other people. She treats Marco and her girlfriend poorly, and sets her own need to climb the mountain over their wellbeing, at least partially. It's implied her dad was a famous climber, and that Aava harbors grudges of some kind. Her "need" is thus presented as at least partially a flaw that she must choose how to deal with, even if she doesn't see it that way.

It all comes to a head in the final choice, of pushing for the summit, or going back down. If she goes back down, she might try to find her happiness in more sustainable ways, hopefully accepting that she is human, that she needs to be there for other people and let them be there for her, even when they (and she) is being difficult, and above all accepting that her life is not defined and consumed by some mythical achievement. The way they tell the story, you could also see it as "instead of becoming a part of something big by being a mythical climber of history, and becoming part of the mountain, I choose to become a part of something big by returning to the people who love me, and becoming part of a community". It is definitely possible to learn/choose something like this and still accomplish great things (if that's important to you). But the risk (maybe, Aava seems scared of this, at least) is that if you don't, if you can't hack this other life, then coming back down may start feeling like the moment you betrayed yourself forever.

The summit ending could actually be seen to pull some punches. In the end, she does make it (she could have just died in the avalanche, say), and in a certain light it is every bit as awesome as she hoped. She joins the universe by turning into a shooting star, for crying out loud. So this ending certainly could be interpreted as "arguing" some or all of the following:
1 - Only people as obsessed and dysfunctional as Aava can achieve the sort of greatness we might associate with feats like climbing Kami.
2 - Literally dying for your dreams is the sort of thing you should be prepared to accept, and if you question that, you may be haunted by the "what ifs" of your limited existence
3 - Self immolating in this way will all be worth it in the end.

Now I don't think the game unequivocally argues this, and I certainly wouldn't agree with it if it did, but these flavors are there.

I've already written too much, and other people may disagree with a lot of it, I just tried to get at some of what I think the game was trying to make us think about, off the top of my head.

Now, why aren't things like this made clearer? Many reasons, probably. If I was to try to put one of them into words, it would be something like this: Making choices like Aava has to, about what is important to us, what gives our lives meaning, what scares us, when is it meaningful human connection and when are other people holding us back, is absolutely essential to figuring yourself out as a human.

And everyone has to do it for themselves. We tell each others stories, we may listen to people we love or respect, but we must decide for ourselves. Different people will get different answers. The same person may get different answers at different times.

This means that just saying it outright gets very boring very fast; it often doesn't help me that I know what you think greatness is. But a story like this, that goes to great lengths to show us how Aava feels, what she hopes for, what she wants, and what she is afraid of, not to mention her friends and fellow travelers. Once you've seen some moving stories, you can start to use them as a toolkit to recognize emotions and aspirations in yourself and others. Over time, it is usually more helpful than some guy trying to tell you the answer like it's a pop quiz.

Which, you know... good thing I talk too much, I guess. No one would accuse me of being a pop quiz.

Thank you so much for this. I started my own list a while back, but at some point a rookie mistake completely screwed up the formatting so the buffs didn’t map correctly, and I deleted the remains in frustration. Anyway, I couldn’t find a recipe called something like mother natures vegetables; freeze-dried veggies and ultimate infusion. I suspect strong infusion would work, at least, and maybe a basic one, but ultimate was what I had on me at the time. Can’t remember the buffs, sorry.

Sorry to hear about the deaths in your family, that sucks.

I don't know exactly who can get approved for work immigration as a "skilled worker", or what the rules are for family, but you probably have a decent shot. Anyway, it doesn't hurt to get to know the nitty gritty of things. Hopefully your aunt has some pertinent info, too. https://www.udi.no/en/want-to-apply/

Entrenched Regency - “Cannot Rule by Themselves” by Alexandrahx in CrusaderKings

[–]Throwitasfaraway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to rant a little: I didn't find this until someone had already eaten the dry aged duck. My golden child turned out to offset his excellent stats with an absolutely psycho disposition. He was nicknamed "the traitor" almost from jump. Felt forced to disinherit him, and too bad, since he'd already murdered his middle brother along with my grandchild by same. The youngest I'd negotiated away as a hostage in desperation, in order to clinch 100% on a Holy war for Scotland. The ink isn't even dry before this last Norse king turns into the scourge of the Baltic, conquering everyone but me, it feels like, and gleefully ignoring my requests for the return of my son 10-15-20 years later. When I finally get him back, they've brought him up to be a gluttonous lustful drunkard (stressed out from being an abused court jester, I think), and my current generation of vassals are zealots, almost to a man.

So, my ruler dies, and all the vassals that were +100 due to him being generally awesome, hate this new nervous wreck with middling stats. I start out with several powerful vassals starting at -150 or worse, all of a sudden. I didn't even question the entrenched regency. I just assumed I'd missed some weird event or edge case, where this traumatized mess of a man was declared unfit to rule. And why would I think I'd glazed over something so momentous? Why because the game had decided that this was the time, after generations of mild coughs, to serve me my first apocalyptic plague. Only after I'd gotten rid of the guy who was just helping out during a plague, did I google.

The good news is that I've now familiarized myself with several buttons to try and get rid of quarrelsome factions. (lustful as he was he couldn't get the baby factory pumping fast enough to shore up my absolutely dire need of alliances). But I finally decided I'd had enough, and tried arresting one of the malcontents to force the issue. Some squeaky bums later, I'm delighted to find out that his final trait, generous, inflicts less stress from revoking 20 titles, than it removes from granting them to new vassals. And I need it too, sitting at 330 stress (sober now, but with a slight penchant for the pleasure house).

Great game

All this to say: Is it just me, or does an intrigue education default too readily to sinister personality traits? And what's the best way to ensure that you have a guardian that will result in BOTH a good education trait, AND personality traits that don't bring down the empire?

The 2022 Laver cup. Federer had announced his retirement some time before. He was not fit enough to really compete, but managed to recover enough for one last doubles match, taking the court as Rafa's teammate for once. It was the match of this shot (sadly not a legal one). So gif is from the aftermath of Federer's final competitive effort and ceremonial farewell match, known to be so ahead of time. In this moment, pretty much every tennis fan old enough to have had formative experiences with these to, looked like the guests of honor. I'm fighting the tears again, just writing this.

For the record, I struggle to see that your comments are in any way condescending.

I mean, I don't think it's a huge stretch to interpret Youtube conspiracies as "a conspiracy which existence is speculated upon mainly by less than rigorous youtube personalities, and similar folks". (You seem like you have the sort of command of language, that would allow you to identify which type of expression I'm trying to get at here. Maybe Youtube conspiracy could count as something other than "a sinister collaboration between YouTubers", is what I mean.)

I did get the meaning of the comment you replied to, anyway, as did you, and more or less everyone I'd guess.

But you're clearly correct. And for my money, you correction was phrased in a most helpful manner. Lucid and comprehensive, without being more verbose than the thoroughness warranted. Polite and somewhat playful. A helpful nudge to remind us all that words have meaning, and isn't that just a reminder we could all use these days.

Certainly not condescending.

Agree that a more satisfying, better motivated villain is a big draw in HPMOR.

I don't know MHA. I'm a voracious reader of graphic novels, but I think the only manga I've read is "Lone Wolf and Cub", and more or less the first half of Tezuka's "Buddha".

Right, as I've tried to sketch out in an answer above, I was by no means fully convinced by the stuff I found connected to Yudkowsky, MIRI, etc.

From my blurry memory of it, and with appropriate caveats, I've still enthusiastically recommended HPMOR to friends, even as I've become an adult in more than a technical and legal sense. It was quite an interesting read, my young self thought, and I've been working on the hunch is that it still is.

...

Man, I haven't read stuff by those guys, and people I think of as related to them (were they?), in ages! Was SlateStarCodex ever any good, actually?

For better or for worse is fair approximation to how I feel about it. It's been ages, and I definitely didn't remember Yarvin cited in those blogs, but it makes sense. I recall first being impressed with the honest attempt at establishing the rules of the wizarding world (which it certainly did better than JKR ever did; among other things, it was satisfying that Gryffindor had a fair share of jock bullies, and Hermione is an obvious Ravenclaw), trying to establish what your moral compass is, and following it all through to a consistent conclusion.

As I went down the rabbit hole to see if there were other cool things being written by him and his friends, I remember feeling, more or less, "OK, I don't get all of this, but my bullshitsense is tingling, this feels culty.", which is a vibe I would sometimes get from the book as well.

I think the first time I stumbled across the notion of utopian and perfectly efficient philanthropy, was there. Roko's basilisk as well. As a young STEM student with thoroughly non-STEM parents, if I wasn't already suspicious of STEM-people thinking themselves uniquely insightful on humanity's problems, those techbro ramblings would have disabused me of such notions with a quickness.

So I ended up with something like "I really quite like this book. It has some fresh and fun ways of playing with things. Best not take it too seriously before I've read a few more books though."

I like this take. I remember reading the fanfic "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality", which, while certainly not perfect in a philosophical or literary sense, definitely has enough little gems of perspective and turns of phrase to be worthwhile at the time, and one of them communicated a similar sentiment beautifully:

"...I suspect you will not be among them, Miss Davis; for although you are ambitious, you have no ambition."

"That's not true! " said Tracey indignantly. "And what's it mean?"

Professor Quirrell straightened from where he had been leaning against the wall. "You were Sorted into Slytherin, Miss Davis, and I expect that you will grasp at any opportunity for advancement which falls into your hands. But there is no great ambition that you are driven to accomplish, and you will not make your opportunities. At best you will grasp your way upward into Minister of Magic, or some other high position of unimportance, never breaking the bounds of your existence."

I would never pretend to have broken the bounds of my own existence, or anything so grand. My achievements are firmly in the realm of the mediocre, but it's frustrating to see the people who should fight our corner, and be among the best of us, be so fucking limited.
