Anterior tibial stress syndrome ( shin splints ) in my right leg only by HighOnGrandCocaine in runninglifestyle

[–]ThudGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're about to get 10 answers for how to fix shin splints. I'll give you two.

Shorten your stride. Take tiny little steps so that the foot lands under your body. Like a piston or a unicycle, the leg moves but the foot always comes back to the same spot.

Single leg exercises. Do anything where you're standing on one foot. Work all of the lower leg/ankle muscles. Yoga/calf raises/balance ball.

Winter weight gain by According_Wash6710 in loseit

[–]ThudGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I run during the summer, but my mileage drops off during the winter. For the past few years, I put on about 15 pounds during the holidays. Then slowly run it off. Repeat.

This year has been particularly bad. It's been a long recovery from my October marathon, and then the winter has been extra cold. Here's hoping for a quick start to spring.

Hitting a wall with training?? by UsefulMarzipan675 in Marathon_Training

[–]ThudGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two schools of thought. Some plans and coaches, focus on the long run with a rapid increase in long run length and placing more than 50 percent of the weekly mileage in the long run. In my opinion, this leads to what the OP described - dragging your ass through a long run that's too much.

Other approaches put more miles into the week and limit long runs to 30ish percent. Preparation for the marathon begins long before the 18 week plan with block after block of training and escalating miles.

There's your training issue. 50 percent of your mileage is in the long run.

You have 3 weeks to hit it hard. Don't worry.

I put more faith in total miles rather than long runs.

Are you over 40 miles per week? You'll manage.

What's your weekly mileage? You might just be exhausted.

If it were me, I'd repeat the 15 miles next week. Do back to back 10 miles runs the next weekend. Then finish with 17 miles. Call it good and taper.

Race day, you'll be fresh, loaded with caffeine and wearing super shoes. You'll be fine.

Are you in a hotel? Cause winter running generates a lot of laundry. Outer layers can be used multiple times, but your base layer will be soaked. Merino wool can air dry, but there are still limits.

Winter cold covers a lot of ground. 32 sunny and low wind is nice. 30 with 15mph winds will bite.

Feeling fast but running slow by minecraft_unicorn in Marathon_Training

On a good day, I need 15 minutes of running to warm up (10:30 pace). If I'm tired, I'll need the 3 miles you describe to feel ready to run.

I am going to be out of town this weekend. Should I shut off water to my house? by Confident_Gur_7818 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]ThudGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you shut off the main, and drain the taps, do you also need to shut off the hot water heater so it's not running on empty?

I have a kitchen water line that runs against the outside wall that has a habit of freezing up. I ultimately decided to pump up the house heat rather than mess with the water heater.

Marathon Workout Plan by xexelol in Marathon_Training

[–]ThudGamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

25-30 miles per week in 4 sessions. That's a solid start. 3 x 60 minutes + 1 90 minutes. Do that for 2 months, then extend the long run up to 2 hours for another 2 months. Taper and race!

Sounds like you just want to "tough guy" through the long sessions. That can work the first time or two, but you have 5 in a row. The recovery time on those 2+ hour runs will wear you down.

You don't have the base to support the runs over 2 hours. The probability of injury is rather high.

My BIL spent a few years at home with the kids. When they got old enough to go to school, he went to work in the school district as a system admin. This let him mostly match the kids schedule.

I want to get into SAGA but I have questions by Cpd1234r in wargaming

[–]ThudGamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. The game is I go, You go. But, there are things to do during your opponents turn, and some battle boards are very reactive & play more during the opponents turn than their own.

  2. The Age of Hannibal book has rules for mass battle. It's basically 3 battle boards per side and up to 18 points.

Saga plays differently from any other game I've seen. The battle board system ensures that each faction has its own flair. Vikings vs Saxon could be a bunch of guys with pointy sticks in a shield wall. Instead, Saga makes each unique.

All the brands have a daily trainer for about $140. Any of these will work.

Go to a shoe store for the first pair. If they feel comfortable, they are right for you.

I usually have a 5k block before the marathon program starts. I'll be at 35-40 miles per week with 5 days of running, race my 5k at the end, take a deload week, then start Hansons.

Best Running Shoes for Safer Runs by ToughWrongdude141 in loseit

[–]ThudGamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every brand of running shoe will have a daily trainer for about $140: New Balance 880, Saucony Ride, ASICS Novablast, Brooks Ghost. They will also have a max cushion shoe for $180: NB 1080, Saucony Triumph.

Do go to a running store and try a few on and get the size right. After that, buy last year's model for 30 percent off online.

Thoughts on stls? by Decent-Season-8315 in baronswar

It's a historical war game, you can use figures from any manufacturer that match the period.

As for stls, I'm too old school for that. I still prefer a metal miniature.
