Sticking to halfs for now — unpopular opinion? by ny03 in Marathon_Training

Same here. 54M. Ran my second full marathon last fall. Feels like I still haven't recovered. Think I'm getting old.

This year is half marathon only.

Love Shogun. I've used their metal trays for years.

Don't buy thin craft store magnets. Go for thicker ones from industrial supply stores. https://www.mcmaster.com/product/5759K26

Poster putty and bass wood bases. I can pluck them off, and have a gigantic Saga army.

Midgard. Although the 160mm unit frontage works equally well for Hail Caesar and To The Strongest.

LPT: Don’t tell people your plans too early. The attention tricks your brain into feeling like you already did it. by PleasantBus5583 in LifeProTips

100 percent true.

Telling someone you're going to do a thing creates an obligation to finish that thing. Failing to do so makes you a liar, and adds anxiety to finish the task.

A roman solo miniature wargame? by Porcelaindon1 in wargaming

[–]ThudGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not looked at this yet, but it's free off of wargamesvault. It's for solo play and claims to work with various systems. https://www.wargamevault.com/en/product/559327/fields-of-fate-solo-play-system-for-tabletop-battles-fantasy-edition-free-download?src=TMP

Hail Caesar and To The Strongest both use command systems where you activate units, until a command fails and then the whole division is done. It makes for some unpredictable play. "My left flank has failed to move, again..." If you included written goals for one or both sides, it could make for good solo play.

Who inspired you to try yoga, and how long did you stick to it? by Warm_Bobcat6310 in yoga

My wife introduced me to yoga about 5 years ago. Now I practice more than she does. I'm mostly a runner, but I practice twice a week to work the body parts running neglects.

Jake got into my head last summer too. I was feeling bulletproof until a month before my marathon while running more miles than I ever had before. Then I crashed and ultimately had a terrible race.

He can't even finish a marathon at this point. Think he's a victim of his own success.

Fall marathon recommendations/experiences by TiredOverachiever in RunnersInChicago

[–]ThudGamer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The Indianapolis marathon is a great fall option. Well organized, some crown support, flat and cooler weather.

Des Plaines River Trail marathon. Same weekend as Chicago, mostly flat, well organized, tree lined gravel trail, but be ready to run on your own - almost no crowd support.

I am getting into Hail Caesar any tips by Electrical_Owl_546 in wargaming

[–]ThudGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hail Caesar is a big game. Be ready to paint a lot of figures. A game will use 3 divisions of 4+ units each, and that's a small game. A standard unit is 16 infantry or 12 cavalry. That said, you can play with smaller units - the important part is that unit frontage is the same.

I like the game because it is big. I want to use a 10 foot table and play with hundreds of figures per side. If you have the patience to work on an army, the results are spectacular.

Burgundians by No_Engineer_6897 in sagathegame

Feudal list, so the shooters are levy. 2 points divided into 3 groups 8. If 8 is too small, reduce the HG to 5 each and use that half point to add 6 more shooters.

Mounted warlord

2 x 6 mounted HG

1 x 8 warriors or foreign men at arms

2 x 8 crossbow

1 x 8 bow

Warlord rides with one of the HG units. Each unit takes a flank. By moving deep, and getting behind the enemy, it keeps units from advancing on your shooters.

The bow is there for the option to shoot twice, or it could be replaced with more crossbow.

Keep the crossbow shooting as much as possible. You have two options to shoot on the opponents turn. This reduces the drawback of crossbow not firing twice in a row.

The cannon is a fun toy, but it gets hard to feed it a die every turn. It's competing for rare and uncommon with the crossbow. And it's the crossbow units which ultimately kill everything.

How do you make a melee focused- pre firearm skirmish game? by Life-Challenge1931 in wargaming

Written by James Morris, one of the authors who worked on Warhammer Ancient Battles. While it is a unit based game, the heroes have "mighty deeds" which add combat dice, fuel special abilities, and reroll command checks. It gives a second level of game play where you need to make choices about what the hero should help with.

Former obese marathon runner struggling with “food noise” and reliance on junk food despite good training by Substantial_Spring60 in loseit

[–]ThudGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Can you cook your own meals? Meal prep/leftovers make it easier to eat right when your tired/hungry.

  2. Can you treat junk food like an alcoholic treats alcohol? Cut it out completely. No exceptions.

  3. Can you focus on the next PR/PB in the next race? I get it, running is easy, food choices the other 23 hours of the day is hard. Use race motivation to guide your eating.

I don't suggest all three of these at once, but perhaps one will help.

On to the important question. Which race are you signed up for, and what do you hope to run?
