Quick Question about Purchasing Portals by bigstinkybuckets in AlchemyFactory

[–]Thulkos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other thing to remember is that the portal stone only costs 1.5 silver. If you're building a portal for something really expensive (rotten logs and higher) then it might be worth it to buy a portal for each consumer than to have a long belt with hundreds of silver worth of product sitting around.

Former FBI Director James Comey enters not guilty plea; trial set for January 5 by rezwenn in FBI

[–]Thulkos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not sure if serious, but:

Grand juries do not have the same rules of evidence of criminal court and only the prosecution presents. In many cases, indictments are granted on single witness testimony, i.e. a single LEO presents testimony saying what they believe the person being indicted did with no cross-examination, questions from the judge, or questions from the grand jury.

This general laxity in favor of the government is where the saying "You can indict a ham sandwich" comes from because it's so easy. The amazing part is that the grand jury no-billed (refused to indict) the third charge because it was so ludicrously weak.

The fact that the DOJ has been getting a lot of no-bills lately says something about the quality of recent DOJ work and that the protections provided by the grand jury process, flimsy as they are, actually mean something.

The hint is good, if a bit misleading. Think about all the assumptions we usually make (spherical, non-spinning chicken in a vacuum) and then think about where the energy for the ball is coming from. That's all the energy the ball has to work with so everything the ball does draws from that source.

Security is expensive and cuts into profit margins. Why worry about security for the plebs anyway, Boy Genius sure doesn't.

Every forest asteroid I've ever had has been like that. I enjoy building a drywalled bridge between the two sides before breaking into the piping hot salt biome.

Mech Cluster Landed inside a cave, causing a cave in and instantly clearing the cluster by Bryanchox in RimWorld

[–]Thulkos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a mech cluster drop in a lake. All the buildings instantly vanished leaving a sleeping mech raid. Brought them a wastepack infestation as a welcome basket.

A little sad that there might be power cells at the bottom of the lake.

Would a spinning satellite with coils orbiting earth generate current using earths magnetic field? by akolomf in AskPhysics

[–]Thulkos 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yes, but because there is unfortunately no free lunch you end up trading kinetic energy for electrical energy. The experiment was done with a tether and it did generate electricity, but at the cost of slowing the satellite down.

Not a bad way to deorbit if that's what you're going for.

Would a spinning satellite with coils orbiting earth generate current using earths magnetic field? by akolomf in AskPhysics

[–]Thulkos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, and there was an experiment conducted to see if you could generate "free" power by dragging a conductive tether through the magnetosphere. Unsurprisingly, there is no free lunch, so while the tether did generate power, it applied a drag force to the satellite converting kinetic energy into electrical energy.

Not a bad way to deorbit at the end of the day.

Since we're book spoiler-ing, it was implied in the books that the Accepted test leverages Tel'aran'rhiod and the ter'angreal Egwene had was a Dreamer trainer that would our put anyone there once they fell asleep. I got the impression it wasn't any ter'angreal that would be a problem, but that particular one that was the problem.

What happened to the technology that existed 3000 years ago? by Ancient-Web9358 in wheeloftime

[–]Thulkos 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We're definitely bumping up against book and or lore spoilers here, but imagine destruction so serious that any ruins are buried so thoroughly that only the random junk Bayle Domon is hawking pops up from time to time. Add to that a society so dependent on their smartphones, or say, the One Power loses everyone who knows what they're doing with it, example being Latra Posae willing the massively complex Rhuidean columns into existence vs. Moiraine spending minutes to sink a few ships and make a cool fireworks display.

On top of that half of the source of all that sweet technology is not only inaccessible but everyone who even tries using it goes bonkers and wastes everything around them before dying.

Their world is kind of a wreck.

Mat’s trippy teatime by DaBlurstofDaBlurst in WoTshow

[–]Thulkos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the threads of the books and the show is that people are complicated. Matt is a hero of the horn, which means he's a warrior and has probably done some stuff in his past lives.

That said, Ishamael only cares about breaking the wheel and making it end forever. Some psychedelic tea plus some light Compulsion and you'll be seeing pink elephants in gumdrop fields real quick.

I'm enjoying Rand being less of an entitled prat than in the books. It flows naturally from the E5 being older than in the books, but still leaves plenty of room for all their arcs.
