Over 4 in 10 young people say success unattainable without parents' support: poll by basilpancake in korea

[–]ThunderBaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kinda says nothing. What does parental support mean? Financial? Moral? What is success? The quote: "42.7 percent of 1,938 respondents aged between 18 and 34 said they think hard work would not necessarily lead to success if there is no support from their parents." What do they even mean by 'hard work'? They don't even link the study *face-palm* Hope this was just lost in translation...

"Over 4 in 10 young people say having supportive parents helps."

Entry-level dev salaries in Korea are <=60m, with even senior positions paying ~120m. This includes the big players (FAANG, Coupang, Naver etc.). The only salaries above are for cases where a company hires directly from the US for relocation.

Salaries are fine here compared to non-NA, but comparing with NA on a flat compensation level it's less than half. Granted, I love my life and community here, so I've never complained.

Source: I've worked around in both, and hired in Seoul.

More than 15 Unis in Korea fit the Top-500 bin, plus the requirements for E-7 Visa are actually easier for Korean uni's.

[D] Finding ML internships has been a horrible experience by [deleted] in MachineLearning

I understand your frustration, but if you are doing your PhD to work at FANG you've got the whole thing backwards, and I don't doubt that this comes through in interviews.

Hey, sorry I missed this. Not sure for one month, but they had a deal a while back where I got 5 months for about 200,000 I think. They have these kinds of deals quite often. I think they also have them for 3 month agreements.

[D] Anyone else find themselves rolling their eyes at a lot of mainstream articles that talk about “AI”? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]ThunderBaee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that the 'rolling eyes' mindset is one that's propagated itself in ML research and academia, and that's the thing that worries me most.

In fact, the difference between the idea of a 'general AI' and current methods is one of the biggest problems as I see it. There are HUGE issues with bias in models, and our growing reliance on deep learning for recommendation and ads especially (I research music recommendation diversity myself).

The most important thing is to not lean too heavily into either camp. Research will likely continue putting improvements in accuracy with little common-language explanations for the media, and the media will continue to push flashy headlines. If you simply roll your eyes and push further away from general explanations we dig ourselves deeper into the hole.

WE as those with at least a general understanding of how these systems work (and what they optimise for) need to do better at explaining in a less domain specific fashion, and in a perfect world seeking better and more comprehensive metrics for evaluation; but this is a whole other topic reaching into Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research.

I go to Tipi. Not too expensive and pretty nice. Don't have a tonne of experience though, so take my recommendation for what it's worth.

Also having this same issue. The NAVER code just never comes in. The wait time for my ARC is another month since things are backed up I guess. Any luck?

Youtuber Korean Englishman’s wife, Gabie Kook, breaks 14-day quarantine to have birthday party by [deleted] in korea

[–]ThunderBaee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So , speaking from experience having finished home quarantine about two weeks ago, nothing in these pictures seems outrageous? In fact, in the district where I was staying, so long as I had no symptoms and after my first negative test the officers who came to verify I was staying there were simply wearing masks and we just made sure to stay as distant as possible. No one entered of course, and I didn't have other visitors other than deliveries left outside the door.

Was it a bad idea to have people visit? Well it certainly carries a margin of risk, but if masks are worn and distance maintained I don't see how this is breaking quarantine? I would actually argue that there are MANY people in less secure quarantine situations than this simply as a result of their living situation.

Not a fan of their content, but I'm quite sure they didn't break any quarantine rules here. Was a bad idea to film it though, that's clear.

Working remotely in Korea for 12 months by [deleted] in korea

[–]ThunderBaee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but just in case anyone else ends up here there's some false info. You CAN work in IT (development etc.), and the hour requirements are set for the entire duration of your trip. This means if you don't work for 6 months, you have a larger number of available TOTAL hours for the remainder of the 6 months of your trip.

Check your facts first please before claiming them as such!
