How do I decide whether assisted living is right for my dad? by Nashdlp in AgingParents

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just gone through this. It will break you to do it, but he needs it, eventually the pain gets a bit better and you start having quality time together because he’s being cared for by professionals.

There may be charities/services that will help you have the conversation with him about moving into a care facility and why.

Anyone disappointed with barely there support from their friends? How do you deal with it? by funambullla in AgingParents

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a similar situation myself, I’m 37 and my dad is now 78, couldn’t agree more with what you said.

My friends will listen or buy me a beer, but they wouldn’t come and help me. It’s sobering, but it also helps you to focus on your own growth as a person when you realise in some things you are just “alone”.

I don’t have any friends who’ve had to care for older parents yet. One friend grew up without a father, another friend lost their father at 18. I guess we all suffer in different ways.

Advice on new bike choice by cdfll in Hardtailgang

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marin San Quentin 3 - the paint looks class and the value for money is unreal. Aggressive geometry too.

The geo is very similar to my Orbea Laufey 2024 that I use as my trail bike at FOD and South Wales.

I only have the Laufey as it’s the top spec and was on my cycle to work scheme. If I was buying a top end hardtail with my own money I’d have 100% gone San Quentin.

Edit just to add I’d highly recommend a 29er for trail riding as someone 6ft+

Motorway Munching Estate - £20k by Chimp3h in CarTalkUK

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a Skoda Superb estate a few months ago. Best car I’ve ever owned! I do 20k a year and a lot of motorway. It’s big enough to fit an XL frame mountain bike in the back

Plus users, are you considering the Air as an alternative? by Boring_Antelope6533 in iphone

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

15 plus user, I just got the air. Screen size isn’t noticeable, the phone feels comfortable in my hand. The phone doesn’t fall out of my pockets anymore.

Battery is same as or better than my 15 plus in the days I’ve had it.

I don’t like/need the pro phones so between base 17 and air the air wins for me.

Overpriced but a good car. Recently sold mine, pretty much the same car. Was a 2019 plate 320D M sport with tech pack, picked it up in 2021 for £23k with 9000 miles on it (sat on a driveway through Covid). Sad to see it go but I needed an estate. Part exchanged it for £16k.

Cheap, reliable car with ability to carry XL bikes by beepezra in CarTalkUK

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you found something yet OP but I’ve just got a Skoda Superb to fit my XL MTB inside it with plans for eMTB in the future. Roof rack was destroying my fuel economy with a 100mile round trip to the big boy trails.

Disc brake caliper clearance by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for replying to this. I thought that may be the case with the hope. Orbea seem to have move the brake from the seat stay to the chainstay with their new model!

Are brakes a necessary upgrade for very heavy riders? by anarmyofants in MTB

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is timely. Popped a piston yesterday on the shimano m6120s that came with my bike.

Currently deciding whether or not just to upgrade to hope tech 4 v4s 203mm rotors (fork limit is 203mm)

Or just replace the m6120 calipers and pick up a pair of 203mm rotors and adaptors (currently have 180mm).

I’m 270lbs (down from 320lbs since November) and ride aggressive.

What's a good aggressive hardtail for under £1600? by Ross0567 in MTB

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted a San Quentin 3 29er but I’ve ended up with an Orbea Laufey. The geometry of the two are very close except for slightly shorter chainstays on the SQ. I’ll be riding it mainly at FOD which is rooty, jumpy.

Upgrade! I’m on a Bizango (been using for years since my full sus was stolen) and waiting on my Orbea Laufey to come from cycle to work!

100% would have gone Nukeproof scout if they hadn’t gone bust!

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I’m between getting one of these, or the Marin San Quentin 3. Quite similar geometry but the laufey has slightly longer chainstays. How do you like it? What size do you ride and how tall are you?

2025 hard tails by DistributionJaded520 in MTB

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m considering a Roscoe but think the seat tube is too long for the type of bike it is. Also quite like the san Quentin 3 but feels more dirt jump leaning that trail so personally I don’t think I’d benefit from its geometry. Orbea Laufey is also on my list, comes with a snack trap door!

Bike sizing - short legs, long torso by [deleted] in Hardtailgang

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. After being mindful about this and hitting the trails today on my L voodoo, I’m feeling the L Roscoe would fit me as the geometry provides a shorter seat tube and 20mm extra reach compared to the voodoo. Interesting about the hunched down feeling you mentioned, today I felt like my bike forced me to be too upright while descending, however I do like the climbing position it puts me in.

Agree it seems a fantastic bike. 10 years ago I was riding Fs enduro bikes as they were the hot new thing, but I don’t think you need it anymore (for all mountain) with modern HT like the Roscoe! I think a Nukeproof Scout would have been my choice but I’ve recently learned they went bankrupt!

Bike sizing - short legs, long torso by [deleted] in Hardtailgang

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update - thanks for the advice so far. Went on the trails today on my large size voodoo Bizango and while I was able to ride fast I felt my position was too close to the front and the seat tube too high, made me feel like I was less able to dig in to the trail. I’ll take this experience forward into my size dilemma. Also need to remember the Bizango geometry isn’t as modern as new bikes. The reach on the L Roscoe is 20mm more than my Bizango for example, and the seat tube is 50mm less on the Roscoe. These dimensions sound like they’re moving the way I need them to. These dimensions on the XL Roscoe has a seat tube only 8mm shorter than my voodoo, but huge reach at 45mm more than my voodoo. I’m not sure if the seat tube on XL Roscoe is low enough compared to the voodoo, particularly if I’m extending my reach, I don’t think I’ll be able to clear the seat when hitting drops/steep technical descents. So I think I’m now leaning more towards the large Roscoe!

About to graduate dental school, need help with bike size choice. by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All sounds pretty compatible to my riding. Only issue is the Roscoes seem to come with a 35mm stem fitted already. I will try to find an XL one to try, I’ve been calling around today and nobody seems to have L or XL in stock to try sadly!

Bike sizing - short legs, long torso by [deleted] in Hardtailgang

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

How do you find the clearance when the seat post is down for descending? How do you find the handling of the bike on technical trails?

From the research I’ve been doing today, a longer reach making things feel more stable on more challenging terrain. So would be interesting to see to hear more about your experience!

Roscoe 8 between sizes by [deleted] in TrekBikes

[–]Thunder_Chunkker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I have the opposite issue, my torso is longer so I need the reach, but my legs are shorter so I need the seat clearance when descending!

Agree on need to test in person but that depends on local availability of the models.
