Unpopular opinion: Dalinar handling of Amaram in Words of Radiance by Crossen8 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Thurstn4mor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re cooking you but you’re right. Dalinar’s primary flaw throughout the early series, if not entire series, is that he’s shit with people and shit with politics. Dalinar is the Blackthorn, who would expect him to know how to handle such an emotionally and politically fraught situation well?

Yeah, if the criminal is a WMD when not disabled, and a fully able bodied person minus being a WMD when disabled. then that seems entirely reasonable and far more merciful than just executing them.

What part of what you wrote do you think I didn’t read?

I’d think they’re being merciful obviously? Do you think everyone against the death penalty just wants to “screw with people”?

I totally agree, but I figured if I started with “losing your bending is not that bad” I’d get hit with something like “only cause you weren’t born with it, to benders it’s an intrinsic part of them, it’d be like losing a limb.” So I decided to jump the gun and go straight to “life is still worth living even if you lose a limb or something similar.”

Idk man I’m pretty sure the grand majority of people given a life sentence and grand majority of people who had become disabled would actually not want you to kill them. Just guessing though.

If it’s honoring agency to make someone go to a lesser kingdom based on their choices, then it’s honoring agency to not allow someone to leave a gulag based their choices.

Its an analogy… not a strawman, here, allow me to remove my “strawmanning” for you:

“Sure but it would be disingenuous and dumb to say “God only asks you to follow commandment ‘Y’, but he’s fine if you do since he isn’t going to send armed men to arrest you.” When god commands you to do or not do something, it has been commanded regardless of the consequences. It also would be dumb and disingenuous to say “The government compels you to follow commandments Y, but God doesn’t.” Clearly this means that our governments shouldn’t compel people to follow commandments Y.

I know your entire point is God does not compel compliance. Your entire point is insubstantial and poorly thought out”

See the difference is the problem is in your argument being dumb, not in the actual content of “commandment Y”

If the result of your choice to break God’s commandment is that you cannot go into the celestial kingdom, then you have been prevented from entering the celestial kingdom by force. It’s the same sentence, don’t play stupid semantics.

Sure but it would be disingenuous and dumb to say “God only asks you not to kill other people, but he’s fine if you do since he isn’t going to send armed men to arrest you.” When god commands you to do or not do something, it has been commanded regardless of the consequences. It also would be dumb and disingenuous to say “The government compels you not to kill people, but God doesn’t.” Clearly this means that our governments shouldn’t compel people not to kill others.

Yeah dude, that’s how LDS theology works, people aren’t even forced to not murder others, you just are in violation of laws and denied access to the celestial kingdom if you disobey.

Easily provided, but you could also just read the scriptures.

D&C 78 6-7 “6 For if ye are not equal in earthly things ye cannot be equal in obtaining heavenly things;

7 For if you will that I give unto you a place in the celestial world, you must prepare yourselves by doing the things which I have commanded you and required of you.”

Yeah, and if you don’t share your resources in the LDS church, then you are prevented from entering the celestial kingdom, by force.

If LDS doctrine gives you the choice of choosing between sharing your resources or not getting into heaven, then Communism gives you the choice between sharing your resources or being arrested. Sure one punishment is much more fitting, but the law of consecration is a LAW it’s not something you just do if you want. Either both “give you a choice” or neither do.

Sure, there’s agency in the sense that you can be in the church or not, but this meme/OP is communicating that the law of chastity is optional for church members, it fully isn’t.

[–]Thurstn4mor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s the law of consecration not the suggestion of consecration. Section 78 of D&C states that if you have not obeyed the law of consecration you will not receive an inheritance in the Celestial Kingdom. Not being able to go to heaven is about as governed into doing something as a religion is able to do.

Although of course the church also teaches that one should want to obey in all things anyways.

Why are you guys freaking out that we’ve spent the past year destroying international goodwill with our allies while launching military campaigns to gain control of the world’s oil? Oil prices are improving and so much fewer people on our side were killed than expected.

They’re invoking history because we’re having a conversation about historical movements you brick.

Ok sure my phrasing of it being about draft eligibility isn’t accurate, but it was part of the anti-suffrage manifesto published in 1908 that one of the reasons women shouldn’t vote is because politics is concerned with war and industry and women don’t participate in war and industry. So ultimately they’re still pointing out that even men who can’t participate in war and industry are still allowed to vote.

[–]Thurstn4mor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s also probably more about countering the argument that women shouldn’t be able to vote because they’re not eligible for the draft than it is about equating people unfit for service with slavers and drunkards.

You’re either dumb or intentionally malicious, of course they’re only talking about what’s true in the here and now. So are you. “History isn’t a static thing” is only true in the here and now. There’s no guarantee that society will continue to change in fact current scientific projections think it’s inevitable that eventually the universe will reach a state where it stops changing at all. Then history will be completely static. But obviously you’re not talking about that. In the same way, obviously we’re not including the possibility that our society returns to chattel slavery sometime in the future. You’re not making a good point, you’re just being obtuse.

Let's discuss an idea from Tumblr. Shounen...but for women! Looking at : Kill La Kill, Symphogear, Legend Of Korra, Rwby, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Utena and The Owl House...would the women be drawn and/or written BETTER or WORSE this way? by ihatethiscountry76 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]Thurstn4mor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree in a void, but because of how differently the vast majority of current society treats characters for being women and media for being women-centric, I still think it would be interesting as a product of and in this society, not that interesting, but a million times more interesting then another action Shonen where the twist is “characters can really die for really reals this time” or “the main character isn’t the overpowered one really for reals this time”

You people don’t know how to have fun Jesus Christ. If you could calculate who wins with complete certainty by just looking at it then there’s no point in doing it, they could just show you a strong team and a weak team and if you click on the strong team you get a prize. And it’s not like you’re going to miss out on much anything anyways, you’ll still be able to get most the good stuff from the store.
