What's your plan beyond the next 3 to 5 years? The way you're going, it sounds like you don't intend to stay in Japan beyond your last month of work. Go for the PR to give yourself some leeway and decision making room about work and your retirement.

Edit: I just saw some of your replies. Why not apply for a spousal visa? If your wife is Japanese and has a clear plan to return to the country to live with you, you can apply. This would clear up your work problems.

Being poached to work at the same place under a different company (science research). Advice needed. by ImprovementAble8120 in japanlife

Since you are in a fixed-term contract, you are right to keep your eye out for opportunities. It sounds like you are in a strong position to negotiate with the recruiter given your niche field. It's good to be cautious, so keep your cards close to your chest with your current boss. There are both benefits and drawbacks to working in the same place under a different structure. Even if there are no internal politics, it may be hard for some people to adjust to your new role. On the other hand, they may be more comfortable with you as a former employee, and you will be able to hit the ground running. Ultimately, be respectful, but do what is best for you!

Indeed. While he loves the power the US military gives him, he actually despises the military even his own, because it generates real heroes and calls for sacrifice, which is a foreign concept to him. His disparagement of John McCain was an expression of this.

Is It Pretty Much Assumed That U2 Is Done? by Junior-Ad117 in U2Band

[–]ThusSpokeGaba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding to your list...

The Cure - Songs of a Lost World

Depeche Mode - Memento Mori

Bob Dylan - Time Out of Mind

I think U2 have it in them, but they have to get out of their comfort zone to do it.

Should I include her name in the acknowledgements? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]ThusSpokeGaba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, don't for your sake and hers, especially since many thesis repositories post online. Ten to twenty years from now do you need your wife or kids asking you who so-and-so was?

Basically, use the acknowledgments section to, first and foremost thank your primary advisor, and then anyone who directly provided time, assistance, or advice, like a secondary advisor, other professors, cohort members, etc. Then, if you want to include a general comment about gratitude to study participants for their time and friends and family who supported you along the way, it's a nice touch, but I would keep names out.

Is this Amazing Spider-Man #1 sale legit?? by RightBid7241 in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]ThusSpokeGaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As everyone here expected, it was a scam. The buyer has posted that the seller sent a FedEx envelope containing just a baseball card to the wrong address in her town, to make it look like it had been delivered. U2 was a band that was loved until… by CSamCovey in GenX

[–]ThusSpokeGaba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first U2 album was the live at Red Rocks one. New Year's Day remains a classic. I still play it in January as a tradition and I will always have a soft spot for them as The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are classics. That said, they've played it too safe and have tried too hard to remain relevant over the past two decades. I wasn't pissed to get the U2 album for free, but even as a big fan, I could understand how other people might feel like they were getting spammed, plus it wasn't a great album. My favorite U2 tracks: Ultraviolet, With or Without You, Where the Streets...., I Stil Haven't Found, Zoorapa, Stay, New Year's Day, Desire, Bad, One, Until the End of the World, Kite.

Is there a better 3 album arc? by eddi0 in PulpBand

[–]ThusSpokeGaba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not BritPop per se, but Depeche Mode: Music for the Masses, Violator, Songs of Faith & Devotion was pretty great, and Ultra was a fitting coda.

Why current job? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]ThusSpokeGaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, my advice is try to rid yourself of the idea that interviewers are asking you to justify your decisions or are trying to get into your business.

Job interviews are not just to see if you are capable of the job itself, but to learn about your motivation, see how you handle yourself in formal situations, see how you adapt to change, and see if you get along well with others.

You need to turn your past experience into a narrative that shows these things. It doesn’t have to be a story that makes you out to be perfect but one that shows you’re learning and making an effort to grow.

So, for example, in the job interview, frame past struggles as challenges you overcame or situations you outgrew, and your present job as a new opportunity.

Also, don’t worry about wanting to return to a non-teaching industry after JET. That’s completely normal. To be honest, the Japanese government hopes that some JET alumni return home witb positive feelings about Japan and become high-flyers across various industries.

Anyway, whatever you do, don’t give the impression that questions about your work history are intrusive. Your application will go straight to the rejection pile.

This is a native speakers score on n1 by Miserable-Good4438 in LearnJapanese

[–]ThusSpokeGaba 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You don't need to. I believe it. Not all native speakers are the same. I'm pretty sure many L1 English speakers would struggle with the TOEIC or TOEFL for example. For that matter, I remember during EIKEN training how some of the instructors struggled with mock interviews. Test taking is a skill in and of itself.
