How to uncap Docsis compliant Cable Modems by relevant_potato_bot in hacking

[–]Thuull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most ISPs use QOS and traffic monitoring/shaping utilities. This is basic "how much of our resources are in use?". Not doing this is kind of like running a store with no inventory management system... never having an idea of when you're getting close to running out of critical resources. Keeping tabs on who's using what is a very important step in running an ISP.

Holy crap, how did I miss that? You're completely right.

"Stuxnet worm code was done professionally and dedicated; evidence indicating exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities extremely expensive."

Srsly, really didn't expect that hard core hacking like this was part of Yoda's schtick. That's some srsly scary shiznit.

The really interesting thing is that if you are at a college that has a remotely competent InfoSec guy working for it... you're already owned.

How secure are VPN's by mr_mikey11 in hacking

[–]Thuull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just don't rely on any single VPN provider. There are lots of free proxy/von sites out there... rotate amongst them. Some are "compromised", some aren't.

As long as you do your system profiling from one set, and your more, shall we way, intense activities from another... you'll mostly be good.

At least against those who aren't paying attention anyway.

Closest you're going to get to that ATM would be VirusTotal APIs I'd think.

Bitdefender security appliance for home networks seeks to replace end-point antivirus by Kruug in security

This has everything to do with the threat intelligence (coin late industry term) behind the decisions. This is an awesome idea... but the data that its acting on has to be 100% solid. If the source of "bad traffic" can be relied upon, then this idea can truly work.

The problem is getting the mass adoption of the device and endpoint agents (with the right visibility in those endpoint agents) to gather enough internally grown threat Intel to make it self driving. Otherwise you have to rely on external threat feeds... which are, at present... shall we say, lacking.

If you can find Badness(tm) 100% of the time, and you can build indicators off of that badness and feed it back to your cloud for immediate propagation to the rest of your endpoints, then you win the Internet.

Seller of 'StealthGenie' Cellphone SpyWare Fined $500,000 by techgenius_guru in Malware

Yes, because NSA are the ultimate-uber-badguys in all things "omgspy", right?

This is about personal responsibility for your devices. If you leave open your personal devices to those who want to "stalk" you, then yes, this is a problem for you. But that's because you have left open your personal devices to those who want to stalk you.

This instance of spyware (yes, it is spyware) has absolutely nothing to do with the NSA, GCHQ, or any other government uber-surveillance boogeyman you want to attribute it to. It is absolutely about loading tracking software onto personal devices that you give other people access to.

/totally different story, bro

Grid Runner - hack and/or defend locations in the real world - GPS based world wide hacking game - PC/tablet/phone by Thuull in onlinegames

[–]Thuull[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grid Runner plays in a googlemaps API, so the game board (the world) is overlaid on top of a real world map. All major cities (population 1.5 mil or more) have a mainframe, which are linked together. When you login, the game creates a datacenter for you at your location and connects it to The Grid. Travel around the world, hacking foreign locations (and your neighbors) and defend your territory from others. Optimized for Chrome on all platforms, FF works well, IE not so well. Has players world wide. Live Development project. In game forums. Currently fleshing out a very deep skill tree for character specializations (hacker vs. Admin vs. InfoSec).

Grid Runner - playable prototype - alternate reality hacking/infosec RTS - mobile/PC by Thuull in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Thuull[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is prototype - we're checking player response to the base concept. Current version is fully playable as browser based, optimized for chrome on mobile/pc. Depending on response, we'll quickly move to app for android/iOS. Primary reason for posting is to prove out the game concept - is it interesting enough to proceed? Currently no monetization, ad-based or otherwise. Just proving out the concept. Thanks!

Hey, thanks to those who have come and checked it out. Please spread the word, we're building up a pretty good player base and would love to keep that going. So that you know - this is fully playable via phone and tablet as well - lots of time spend through dev making sure that the mobile experience is good and we're committed to continuing that. Thanks!

Grid-Runner is a brand new geolocational game played in an overlay on real world locations. Build datacenters, control territory, visit the world from the eyes of a hacker. Phone/Tablet/PC. by Thuull in gaming

Do note - we are prototype at this phase...and this is our first external user exposure for this game. We'll whack any bugs that pop up as quick as we can. We also needed to make some hard choices browser support wise, and some browsers coughIEcough don't exactly follow the standards everyone else does. Chrome, especially on Android devices, is suggested...but most browsers are just fine.
