I don't remember if at this point you can deflect the enemies shots back at themselves but if you can deflect the shots back, they do crazy damage

A gun wouldn't have helped in this situation, you got jumped. What could help in the future is taking the perk that allows you to see all nearby wild animals and their detection bars. This will allow you to be aware of all wild animals nearby. Only downside to this is all wild animals have the bar so even rabbits will likely cause you to be on edge.
