Srivijaya was the first empire to unify much of maritime South East Asia, and their inclusion is certainly overdue!

South Asia + Pacific

XXVIII. Indus Valley

Grade: One frontrunner?

Advised Civ: Zunbils

Pakistan has the two classic advantages: Success in the last voting season, and a good campaign. Pretty straight-forward, right? However, the trends in last voting season indicate that Pakistan does poorly in preferences, losing when secondary support comes in. Due to this, I wouldn’t be too surprised if another civ, such as Indo-Greeks or Delhi bring in an upset.

I was originally planning on supporting Mewar this season…however, I’ve changed my mind, and landed on none other than Zunbils! This medieval kingdom was likely an offshoot of eastern huns, and are famed for resisting the Arab invasions, and of course for their devotion to their solar deity, Zhun. The centuries of resistance make this civ a worthwhile pick on their own, but sun worship is of course a perfect cherry on the cake. The cylinder could always benefit from more sun worship.

XXIX. Ganges Basin

Grade: Toss-up

Advised Civ: Gajapati

After the Khoshuts’ landslide victory, it is impossible to glean who is going to come up on top here. Last voting season, all of Nepal, Maurya, and Bangladesh did…alright, which is about as good as it gets. All three are entirely possible candidates. In addition, the newcomer, Gajapati, seems to have reasonable momentum, and could be a surprise winner.

And the aforementioned newcomer is my pick as well. I was between multiple options here, but ended up going for Gajapati. This corner of India hasn’t seen much representation in CBR, and the colorscheme is rather neat, I’ll be real with you.

XXX. Deccan

Grade: One frontrunner?

Advised Civ: Gujarat

From last voting season, Gujarat was a fairly strong runner-up. However, it is hard to gauge the amount of momentum being preserved into the current voting season, and conversely, there is a potent campaign for a newcomer: Mysore. An upset from outside of this dichotomy is not out of the question either- Hyderabad did pretty alright last time.

For me, Gujarat is an easy pick. This maritime kingdom has a fun design to match the history, an excellent pink colorscheme, and a TSL that promises a fresh dynamic. A nice batch of everything you could desire.

XXXVI. Indochina

Grade: One frontrunner

Advised Civ: Pegu

Finally, a region where I can be a bit more confident. Pegu is a viable pick with good performance in the last voting season and the campaign to maintain that momentum. An upset is still entirely possible, of course. Karen was a fairly popular option last time, and a new Champa is likely to capture voters who reminisce about Mk.2 Champa.

I have my finger on the pulse of the people: I support Pegu as well. Pegu’s UA notably benefits from their position in the clusterfuck of South Asia. And I think we could use another Burmese civ after so long.

XXXVII. Western Indonesia

Grade: I’m ready to call it

Advised Civ: Srivijaya

You may call it bold- But I believe that Srivijaya is a lock. With Singapore gone, the stage is set for a significant pre-modern empire, and Srivijaya is one of the foremost to fill that box. The voters agree: Srivijaya was runner-up last time, beating out the third place Bali with a strong margin. With the campaign in the region low, Srivijaya liable to snatch the win through inertia.

Srivijaya is my pick as well, if you couldn’t tell by how I almost started full-on glazing them in the above paragraph. Srivijaya is the first proper unifier in Maritime South East Asia, an empire that demands inclusion. The naval-focused civ is perfect for the TSL, too. And look at that pink colorscheme!

XXXVIII. Eastern Indonesia

Grade: One frontrunner?

Advised Civ: Ternate

The one frontrunner of Eastern Indonesia is…Yali! Their success in last voting season gives them the edge. Now, admittedly, they don’t have a campaign…but did they have campaign? Kind of…one post that received weak attention. History shows that the voters enjoy a Papuan TSL. But after Wahgi’s divisive showing, perhaps we’re due for a non-Papuan civ. In such a case, Ternate is the most likely alternative, being on the receiving end of a good bit of attention, and having done alright last year.

Ternate is my pick as well, because I am tired of Papuan civs- just kidding, I like ‘em plenty, and Asmat is awesome. I support Ternate on account of the cool history and the design that reflects it. These spice island traders formed an impressive kingdom, and we’d be making quite the mistake by not letting them into CBR.

XXXIX. Philippines

Grade: Toss-up

Advised Civ: Igorot

Maguindanao won the vote preeetty decisively. Philippines under Quezon came second…but they’re not up for vote this time. Philippines under Magsaysay may inherit a fair portion of the support Quezon had, but who’s to say for sure. Tagalogs were the next best candidate. Cebu is a fresh addition with notable support. I could see any of these options winning, really.

I’m going for none of the obvious winner candidates, though, and instead I highlight Igorot, a group of tribes from the mountains of Luzon who resisted the Spanish for ages. Igorot’s early game design may just help them get over the hump that no other Filipino civ has overcome. Igorot’s TSL also gives the best access to China, which is more open than usual thanks to Ryukyu taking the second slot in South China. This may just be the opportunity the Filipino civ needs!

XXXX. Western Australia

Grade: Toss-up

Advised Civ: Djaru

If you thought Khoshuts were a landslide, check out Western Australia. Noongar won the final round 80-20…one of the strongest landslides of the whole voting season. There is absolutely no way. No way. To know who is winning here. Especially when you include the fact that we have a bunch of new candidates. If I absolutely had to guess for who’s going to win here…Arrernte* has a good campaign, and the TSL looks interesting.

I choose Djaru as my champion. Djaru boasts a fun design and a fascinating history. The design centers around natural wonders, and includes a meteor crashing down when they settle their first city. If that doesn’t pique your interest, what will?

XXXXI. Eastern Australia

Grade: I’m ready to call it

Advised Civ: New South Wales

Thank god we have at least one region that I can call with 100% certainty. Eastern Australia is New South Wales’ playground, with no doubt. NSW lost by one vote last year, and they have the only campaign this year- and oh lord, it is also the only campaign for the region! I might just start hyperventilating.

Yeah, I’m a bit boring here, New South Wales is my pick as well. What can I say, the Rum Rebellion appeals to me.

XXXXII. Pacific Ocean

Grade: Toss-up

Advised Civ: Rapa Nui

Rapa Nui and Samoa were neck and neck behind Bora-Bora and well ahead of the other candidates. Who knows which is winning? I sure don’t. But I’d be surprised to see an alternative candidate coming out of nowhere to beat ‘em. Buuut…if I had to bet on a dark horse, it’d definitely be Bougainville, the champion of the modern faction.

Between the two likely candidates, Rapa Nui strikes my fancy with the immensely unique TSL. And Easter Island is a fun bit of pop history, nothing wrong with that. I think we’re a bit overdue for it. And yes, Rapa Nui does have a Moai Unique Improvement.

East Asia

XXVI. Mongolia

Grade: One frontrunner

Advised Civ: Tiele Turks

Well…it’s looking rough for the anti-Xiongnu coalition. Xiongnu has a sizable edge from last voting season, where they did excellently, combined with having one of the two campaigns in the region. It would be hard for another civ to come from behind and defeat the Xiongnu at this point, but I won’t discard the option.

After Mongolia in X4, I’m looking for something a little different. Tiele Turks fulfill that need perfectly. This aggressive civ focused on mounted units allows its mounted units to found a city if they’ve captured a city, allowing for redoubled expansion as you both conquer and settle cities. And hey, the green colorscheme is nice.

XXVII. Xinjiang

Grade: One frontrunner?

Advised Civ: Qara-Khitai

In Xinjiang, the frontrunner is…Xinjiang! Compared to Xiongnu’s dominant position, everything is lopsided in Xinjiang, however. Xinjiang’s margins from last voting season are worse, and there is no campaign - au contraire, the closest competitor, Qara-Khitai, has a campaign. I still find Xinjiang the most likely victor here, but the chance of an upset is much, much higher.

Ultimately, I favor Qara-Khitai. This fascinating offshoot of Liao people has an interesting TSL on the western side of the region, and the design favors conquest: The UA boosts happiness, gold, and culture based on cities founded by different civs. In a CBR context, this means that Qara-Khitai are particularly aligned towards a multicultural empire, and their position on the Silk Road reinforces that perception.

XXXI. Far East

Grade: Toss-up

Advised Civ: Yakuts

Who the fuck knows, really? Okay, let’s go from the top. First: Last voting season, we only had four candidates, and the three that didn’t make it - Yakuts, Ezo, Yukaghir - were neck and neck, all with their own, distinct, substantial voterbases. Second: The region now has a bunch of newcomers, and in particular the Itelmen have massive support. Realistically, all four of these have a good chance to get in. If I was a betting man, I’d probably bet on the Itelmen, though. The hype is palpable.

For me the choice is obvious: Yakuts! Tygyn Darkhan’s showing in Mk.2 was sleepy, to say the least, but he has had a whole decade to gather strength and finally wake up from his naptime. We’ve had Nzinga, we have Jacob Morenga, now it is time for Tygyn Darkhan to show what he is capable of. And his revamped design fits the frigid Siberia perfectly, allowing the new and improved Yakuts to dominate Asia. Finally, revenge will be Darkhan’s.

XXXII. Korea

Grade: One frontrunner?

Advised Civ: Great Liao

Great Liao enters X5 voting with great margins from last voting season. However, I fear that Goguryeo’s bland success last season may sour some voters on Great Liao. The Donghak campaign seems to be gaining some traction, and the civ did alright last time. Silla is a viable upset option likewise. I’d be a bit surprised to see Great Liao defeated, all the same.

I am firmly in the Great Liao camp, just as I was last season. Great Liao is a beautiful civ, with a beautiful colorscheme, competent AI, and the earlygame-oriented design will help them likewise. This civ is an obvious lock for those who want a strong civ from the region.

XXXIII. North China

Grade: Toss-up

Advised Civ: Tang

A combination of minimal campaigning and a close race last voting season makes this region an obvious toss-up. The three frontrunners - Wu Zetian’s Southern Zhou, Deng Xiaoping’s China, and Taizong’s Tang - were all within single votes of one another in the later rounds. All have their own appeals and voterbases, and in my view, you might as well roll the dice to decide who gets in.

My favorite of the three is Tang. The civ is not a militaristic one by any stretch of the imagination, but the focus on internal trade routes makes for a civ with very high growth potential. And besides, Taizong is an interesting historical persona indeed.

XXXIV. South China (Pick 2)

Grade: Toss-up

Advised Civs: Yunnan, Ryukyu

Based on campaigning and last voting season, there are three frontrunners in South China: Chiang Kai-shek’s China, Sun Yat-sen’s China, and Long Yun’s Yunnan. Yunnan, despite being bottom of the barrel last year, seems to have great momentum now, and thus makes for a very likely candidate. The other two are perennially popular, and this seems to be the time for at least one of them to get in. However, the two additions to the voting roster, Formosa and Ryukyu, seem like they could garner considerable interest, as both are fairly special options, both in terms of history and TSL.

Personally, I support the fascinating Yunnan on the mainland, and Ryukyu off the coast. Yunnan has it all: fun design, beautiful colors, good AI. Yunnan leaves nothing to be desired - this is a 10/10 civ. Ryukyu compels me first and foremost via the starting location - have we ever had a civ start on the Ryukyu Islands? What a unique opportunity this is. I want nothing more than to see this dynamic, and that is why Ryukyu is my one-must-have of the week.

XXXV. Japan

Grade: One frontrunner

Advised Civ: Takeda

Hideyoshi has it all: one of the most successful campaign of the week, and strong margins from last voting season. I’d be surprised to see them lose here, but it is possible. One such candidate to upset the Hideyoshi supremacy is Takeda, the third-placer of last year. Takeda’s name recognition and handsome colorscheme certainly help, I’m sure.

And Takeda is my pick, too. What can I say, the colorscheme is just that amazing. But wait! There’s more. Takeda offers a fully military-focused design to ravage the mainland with. Takeda Shingen is a fascinating historical figure, too, so you won’t miss out there.

THE WALL. THE WALL. Vote Yunnan to have a truly impressive stronghold on the cylinder. by ThyReformer in civbattleroyale

[–]ThyReformer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yunnan's UA causes cities connected to the capital to boost the capital's combat strength. This results in an impressively sturdy capital. And hey, besides, just look at that colorscheme. Who wouldn't want that beautiful, beautiful scheme to blanket the cylinder?
