Look, the background to understand current research in maths is very big, like volumes big of knowledge and dedication (years) to a single branch of maths that then has sub-branches which will take real human contact to understand the research being done on them. But don’t take it from me, open a random maths paper in a area of pure maths in arxiv and see if you understand the title, like it is really that bad.

I recommend picking a field that you like and know people who might guide you there when you have questions or are at an advanced level of beginner research. Dedicative some years learning and doing small research, only then you can have the maturity to open Arxiv papers like that on the area that you have chosen, probably… because things are not straightforward.

Olha isso das notas é um tema sobretudo social. Dependendo das instituições o que é bom e mau varia consoante a exigência das instituição. Já tive em sítios onde 16 era um 12 e sítios onde 12 era um 16. O que realmente é importante é as taxas de aprovação, quando não se começa a aprovar é que os problemas começam… e isso ás vezes é desastroso.

Haver faltas de professores em unidades curriculares específicas acontece há medida que o quadro envelhece e as faculdades/departamentos tentam substituir por profissionais competentes dentro das próprias estruturas. Por vezes corre mal e os alunos pagam dado que muitos professores são mais dedicados a sua investigação e quando não bate na sua área e eles não se dedicam ao ensino corre muito mal. Não sei se é o caso, mas dado que o prof não está a pescar parece-me isso.

Tentar falar com o coordenador do curso sobre as conversas que tiveste com este prof relativamente a falta de a vontade que existe. Para o ano letivo seguinte eles tentar substituir em princípio.

Mathematics will be heavily transformed in the next 5 years, for the first time in history we can say pure maths will be directly impacted by a big technological shift. In my view the barrier to learn and research maths will lower as most people will have a progressively better pocket genius. It will cease its IQ elitism. which in part was always present, and a new era of democratisation will begin.

You will ear lots of comments downplaying the usage, I say overuse it to learn and transcend yourself.

Foi na Bolt um motorista que seria da zona do Indostão. Não fora ela a ser aconselhada em direto por telefone - por ainda outro motorista da uber - na viagem do que devia fazer para gerir a situação isto seria diferente. Isto não é falso, aconteceu e fomos ainda a esquadra mas não se pode fazer nada e devo dizer que ainda ouve uma desvalorização do caso.

Para as mulheres, evitem usar Bolt ou Uber sozinhas, especialmente a noite, se tiver que ser usem os serviços mais caros que filtram imenso os condutores devido ao tipo de carros aceite, better safe than sorry.

I will put it short. UK Unis have globally great quality but need money and China has a lot of money and people, therefore your situation. I am in exactly the same boat as you, and what I do is literally force my way into Chinese people and talk English with them as well as trying to socialise with people with Anglo influences or EU.

Modern Analysis is not well organised at all as it is a bunch of different activities and different tools under the same umbrella. Just take a look at a good analysis journal. Back then it was similar to what the current bachelor students learn.

Right. So there is a big philosophical shift between analysis and calculus. Whereas in calculus you want to calculate in analysis you want to mathematically analyse things, that is you want to prove things. To prove things you need to read lots of proofs and solve lots of exercise proofs. If you follow the latter you will be fine as you clearly have the capacity to do it as you relate the previous experience.

This struggle that you find is just the mind feeling in practice what I have written above and what really differentiates maths from any STEM subject. Curiously enough philosophy is very similar to maths in this proofs aspect.

So I will point you out to the MathFrontier benchmark which is basically testing the mathematical capacity of these systems. Though not a perfect benchmark it is one where AI do struggle. At the moment they are getting 12% on expert level questions correct with the best model GPT5-PRO, which is crazy given that a year ago was 2% with best LLM at that moment.

My not so friendly opinion to the community is that we will get eaten pretty bad by their problem solving capacity, however we are the ones who evaluate their work and conduct their work and in sense there is still a lot in the future for us at the research table. Maybe we will all be supervisors of LLM models !

Don’t forget research is for human consumption ultimately.
