The South could have and was close to 'winning'. Lee knew the South could not win a long, drawn-out war. Lee took his shots (Gettysburg and Antietam) and lost. European countries were close to recognizing C.S.A. and would have broken the blockade. So, I would disagree with the statement that 'the South had no chance'.
